Abstract
264,355. Arbon, P. March 8, 1926. Wells ; borehole apparatus.-In a packer for oil wells having an expansible packer element arranged for longitudinal movement on a string of tubing, wedge means are provided adapted to grip the sides of a well casing, on insertion of the packer therein, to support the tube within the casing. In Figs. 1 and 2, tubing 2 movably carries a packer comprising a rubber sleeve 3 held between rings 4 having inner projections 5 which engage when the packer is set; a valve 7 on the tubing is normally held away from a seat on the upper collar 4 by a spring 8. Movably arranged below the packer is a guide block 9 with sliding dove-tail connection to slips 10 connected by straps 12 to a collar 11<a> and pressed by springs 16. Below the collar 11<a> is a sleeve 11 with leaf springs 19 engaging the casing 1, the sleeve 11 having a slot 21 engaged by a pin 17 on a sleeve 18 held between adjacent couplings 2<a> on the tubing 2. The device is lowered into the well to the desired point, the tube 2 is raised so that the pin 17 may be turned to the long leg of the slot 21 and the tube 2 is then lowered; on the collar 11<a> engaging the sleeve 11, the slips 10 are moved into locking engagement with the casing, after which the valve 7 contacts with its seat; gas from the well then passes through grooves within the block and packer to expand the sleeve 3 to pack off the well. When releasing the packer, the block 9 may be jarred by the coupling 2<a> if necessary. In Figs. 5 and 6, the packer comprises a sleeve D held between end collars E, F, the collar E having a seat for a valve C on the table B. The guide block G carries slips H. connected by straps h to a collar J pressed by a spring K. Coupling members b, b' limit movement of the packer and guide block. The slips H are engaged with the casing by changing the speed at which the device is being lowered, the valve C is then seated and the packer is expanded as before. When the packer is set, delivery from the well is effected through the tubing 2 or B.
