Abstract
264,258. Wade, H., (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). Oct. 22, 1925. Drawings to Specification. Vacuum tubes; low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-Potassium, caesium or rubidium are introduced into electric discharge tubes by introducing into the tube or into a receptacle connected thereto a mixture of one or more compounds of potassium, caesium or rubidium with one or more azides of barium or other metals of the second principal group of the periodic system and heating. The mixture may be introduced in a solid state or in the form of a solution, the sol. vent of which volatilizes when the tube is evacuated. After sealing the tube, the mixture is gently heated and the azide decomposes, the metal of the second group then reducing the compounds of potassium &c. to metal and the alkali metal produced volatilizing. A mixture of caesium chloride and barium azide mav be used. The process is applicable to tubes with incandes. cent or cold cathodes, the alkali metal forming a thin layer on, and increasing the electron emission of, incandescent cathodes and combining with residual gases.
