Planing.-A machine for planing the edges of large slabs or plates is provided with four motordriven cutters one to act on each edge, the slab being clamped to horizontal bearers 6. The cutter 1 for planing the edge 5 is traversed over a fixed support 7 and driven by a separate motor 8. During this operation a carriage 10 travels along the bed and planes the long edges by means of cutters 2, 3. At the conclusion of this travel a cutter 4 is traversed across the carriage 10 to plane the remaining edge. Each edge may be cut to a different profile.
