Abstract
263,588. Holt, H. E. S. Nov. 7, 1925. Periodic brakes; blocks acting on drunrs.-In apparatus for lowering mail bags &c. from aircraft wherein the larger of two parachutes only becomes operative when a pilot weight touches the ground, as described in Specification 168,924, the unwinding of the pilot weight cable from its drum effects a gradual application of brakes to the drum through worm reduction gear and screw and nut mechanism when the necessary length of cable has been paid out. The cable e<1> for the pilot weight is wound on a drum which is initially prevented from rotating by a safety pin g which must be withdrawn before use, and by a pin g<1> which is withdrawn by a static cord g<2> attached to the aircraft. As the weight falls a worm on the drum spindle turns a worm wheel forming a nut on a threaded spindle h which moves axially until the enlarged threaded portion engages a block h<4> to apply brake blocks h<1> to the drum when the necessary length of cable has been paid out. The spindle h has a keyway engaged by a, pivoted key which can be moved out of engagement with the keyway to enable the spindle to be turned to set the apparatus.
