Abstract
262,960. Wade, H., (Yale Electric Corporation). Dec. 30, 1925. Rotary-mould-table machines; tamping-machines; feeding and measuring; moulding drycell electric battery units.-A machine for moulding bobbins for dry batteries comprises an intermittently operated conveyer for supplying charges of the depolarizing material to a hopper, an electrode feeding device, a tamping device for compressing the material into moulds in a rotary table and means for successively operating on the material in the moulds as the table rotates. The depolarizing material in a container 7 is fed through a cam-operated valve 119 to the buckets 111 of an endless band conveyer 105. The conveyer is given an intermittent motion by ratchet wheel mechanism 106, Fig. 11, operated by a connecting-rod 113, bell-crank lever 114 and cam 115. The buckets 111 are pivoted at one end to platforms 116 on the conveyer belt and discharge the material into a hopper 79. To facilitate the discharge, the buckets are given a vibratory movement by means of a bell-crank lever 129, Fig. 5, which is reciprocated by linkage 128 and a serrated cam 126, the buckets in their movements rebounding on to the lever 129 after striking a stop 131 carrying a guide 132 for the discharged material. The discharge of the material from the hopper 79 is facilitated by rotating the hopper by a pulley drive mechanism 142 and by giving it a vibratory movement by means of a serrated sleeve 133, Fig. 12, acting on a pin 135 carried by the hopper. A crank 15 operates a tamping device 24 which compresses the material into a bushing 138. A rotary table 53 carrying moulds 78 is intermittently rotated by means of ratchet mechanism 57, Fig. 8, provided with a, positioning catch 59 and an operating pawl 66 reciprocated by a cam-actuated lever 65. A brake 69 is fitted underneath the rotary table to prevent overrunning. The tamping device pushes the material contained in the bushing 138 into the moulds 78 in the table as the table rotates. The material in the moulds is then operated on by a series of four plungers 50 carried by a reciprocating head 25 on a vertically movable shaft 31 which is operated by a cam 39 and linkage 37. Beneath the table a frame 82 carries three adjustable stops 84 in alignment with three of the plungers 50 and adapted to register with the moulds 78. After the material has been tamped in a mould, the rotation of the table brings that mould under the first plunger, which further compresses the material, and owing to the absence of a stop beneath the mould causes a part to project. The projecting part is removed by a scraperon the frame 82 during the next movement of the table. The second plunger functions in co-operation with an electrode feeding mechanism comprising a hopper 88, Fig. 10, containing the electrodes 95. The electrodes enter the grooves of a star-wheel 89 rotated by ratchet mechanism 90, the pawl 91 of which carries a pin 92 operated as required by a lug on the reciprocating head 25, and the rotation of the star-wheel transfers theelectrodes to a shoot 96 which feeds them to the compressed material in the mould into which they are pressed by the plunger. The third plunger has' a central channel to receive the end of the electrode and effects a final compression of the material. The fourth plunger ejects the finished article.
