Chain-stitching; needles, driving.-In a. machine for attaching a lining sole f in a turn shoe having an outer sole a, felt insole c and upper d a curved edged needle 11 co-operates with a looper 17 which engages the thread carried by the protruded end of the needle and moves it in an arc so as to present a loop for penetration by the needle in its next stitch. The needle is driven bv a cam-actuated lever 6 and link 15. The looper has a projection 57 and a notch 58 and is moved in a direction across the stitch line bv a cam actuated lever 7 connected to the looper carrier 26 by a universal joint 27. In order to produce the component of movement parallel to the stitch line the carrier 26 is mounted on pivots 19 in curved slots 20 in a channel plate 18 secured to a slide 22 which is reciprocated by a cam-actuated lever 10. Stitches and seams. - The seam formed is shown in Fig. 8. Feed by wheels.-The feed is effected by wheels 38, 38<1> and 42. The shaft 31 of the wheels 38, 38<1> is moved step-by-step by a pawl 33 engaging a toothed wheel 32 and mounted on a lever 35 which has a roller thereon engaging a vertical slot in a slide-plate 30 reciprocated by a camactuated lever 9. The wheel 42 is driven from the shaft 31 by gearing 39, 40. The shaft 31 is mounted in a slide 44 which may be drawn downwards against the pressure of a spring 45 to remove the feed wheels from contact with the work. Boot-sole sewing-machines, welting and turnshoe; presser-bars with periodic control. - The shoe is pressed against a slotted pressure-plate 55, through which the needle operates, by a presser 47, the stem of which is guided on the shaft 31, and a stud 48, and carries an eye 50 held between a spring 52 and a collar 54 on a rod 51. The rod 51 is lifted to apply pressure by a cam-driven lever 8.
