Nov. 18, 1925 Percussive hand tools. - In reciprocatory mechanisms or tools, such as the mechanical hammer shown, in which the motion is produced by unbalanced centrifugal forces arising from the rotation of weights C driven through bevel gearing D and a slidable shaft E from a motor or driving shaft G, the usual power storing spring transmitting rotation from the driving shaft G to the shaft E is replaced by a centrifugally acting yielding coupling J. and/or the spring producing an axial force to opposing the upward throw of the weights E is similarly replaced by centrifugally acting masses M producing an axial thrust varying with the speed of drive. The centrifugal coupling comprises weights J pivoted at K to lugs on a sleeve H slidably keyed to the shaft E and located in a casing Y secured to the driving shaft G, pins S on the sides of the weights engaging slots L in the walls of the casing so that a torque is produced by the outward movements of the weights when subjected to centrifugal force. The masses M pivoted to the casing Y transmit an axial thrust to the shaft E through arms N, the forced ends of which engage arms P on a loose sleeve W adapted to bear against a collar Q on the shaft. Resilient rods R prevent rotation of the hammer head about its axis. The arrangement of the weights and levers may be modified.
