Vaporizers, external. - An electric heater situated in the carburettor or induction pipe comprises a heating element and an absorbent element arranged in contact with the major portion of the. heating element, a minor area of the heating element being left free from contact with the absorbent element. As shown in Fig. 3, one or more resistance wires 4, bent into one or more loops, are situated between pads 7 of asbestos or other absorbent material in a sleeve 10 carried by a screwed plug 1, the ends of the wires 4 being exposed at the outer end of the ;pads. The ends of each wire 4 are connected respectively to the plug 1 and to a central binding post 2. The end of the sleeve 10 is provided with a screen 11, and holes are provided in the sleeve and in the pads 7 for the passage of fuel or mixture. In a modification, the wires 4 do not.extend beyond the bottom of the plug 1, and the pads 7 are replaced by a porous refractory cement. In a further modification, a resistance wire 17, Fig. 10, is wound on a plate 16 of insulating material mounted in a casing comprising two telescoping sections 18 the sides of which are lined with absorbent pads. As shown in Fig. 18, the resistance wires 45 are star-shaped and are situated between pads 42, 43, 44 mounted on a binding post 38 insulated from, but carried by a plug 37. The heating element may be connected in parallel with the circuit of the starting motor of the engine.
