Abstract
262,509. Wood, R. Sept. 9, 1925. Auxiliary steam supply for idle running.-Apparatus for supplying lubricant to locomotive and winding- engines, and auxiliary steam to prevent the formation of a vacuum when running idle with the main supply cut off, comprises a fluid-operated piston valve the head C of which controls the steam supply and ported grooves and passages in the stem c<1> thereof controls the lubricant supply. The inlet D is connected to the main steam supply on the boiler side of the main regulator, and the outlet E is connected to the engine cylinders generally through the main steam pipe leading to the valve casing. The inlet K is connected to the pipes supplying the engine cylinders, and supplies steam to control the valve-actuating piston H when the main regulator is open. The space h<6> is connected to atmosphere or a source of uniform pressure. The piston H is acted upon by a spring h<9>, and a second spring c<3> is usually arranged between the piston H and the valve spindle c<1>. A bore c<4> in spindle c<1> is partly or wholly closed by a plug c<6>, and has radial ports p<1>, p<2>, q<1>, q' communicating respectively with pairs of grooves P<2>, P<1>, Q<2>, Q<1> and steam supply ports r<2>, R which are opened or closed respectively according to the position ot the head c. The bore mav also be supplied with steam from chamber d<1> in the closed position through longitudinal ports not shown. Lubricant is supplied to the apparatus through unions f<1>, f<2>, g<1>, g<2> connected to a pump and head of oil respectively and passes by means of the grooves to the cylinders by means of pipes connection to the unions f<3>, f<4>, g<3>, g<4>. In the position of the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, the piston H is moved to the left by a spring h<9> and the valve to the left by the steam pressure from the supply D, the engine main supply connected to the inlet K being cut off. The auxiliary steam passes to the engine through passage E and through passages R, valve bore c<4>, and radial passages p<1>, q<1> into the stream of lubricant passing through passages F<1>, G<1>.
