Abstract

261,930. Farrell, D., and Helmholtz, A. W. Dec. 15, 1925. Blasting cartridges.-Relates to a method of blasting by inserting into a drill-hole, a rigid container, connected by a pipe to a source of fluid pressure, the fluid being then forced into the container under a pressure sufficient to burst it. According to the invention the container has a portion of its wall, preferably an end wall, of less strength than the remainder. Fig. 2 shows one form of cartridge, having a cylindrical casing 1, a portion 2, of the wall being provided with a passage 3 connected to a pipe 4. Rings 7 are secured near the ends of the casing by welding &c., and rupturable closure discs 9 are retained against the rings 7 by threaded outer rings 8. A modification is described in which one end of the cartridge is integral with the tubular wall, the other end being closed by a disc held against an internal shoulder by a screwed ring. The pipe 4 extends through the tamping in the drill-hole to a pump or the like by which a non-combustible liquid or gas such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or air is forced into the cartridge. The pipe may extend as a coil through a cooling tank.
