Charging; charges, agitating.-A rotary agitator 2, 3, for gas producers is mounted on the lower end of a hollow shaft 1 which is automatically raised and lowered by increased and decreased resistance respectively in the body of fuel, cooling fluid being supplied to the parts 1, 2, 3 through a flexible pipe 4. The driving gear for the shaft 1 comprises rings 5, 6, 7 connected together by pivoted links 10, the lower ring 5, which carries the worm-wheel 11 engaging a worm 13 on the driving-shaft 12, being fixed in relation to the shaft 1, while the upper ring 7 is secured to the shaft by its hub 7a and a wedge 14. The upper end of the shaft 1 carries a ring 1<b> which is formed with a pin 25 engaging in a slot in the end of a pivoted lever 26 on which is adjustably secured a weight 26<a>, the latter serving, when the shaft 1 is moving downwardly owing to less resistance in the fuel bed, to augment the weight of the agitator and so cause it to penetrate deeper into the fuel. A sleeve 16, carrying a vertically reciprocating distributing cone 15, surrounds the shaft 1 and is connected by levers 17, 18, Fig. 3, to a crank 19 which is pivoted to a disc 20 mounted on the shaft 21 of the rotary fuel-feeding drum 22, the shaft 21 being driven from the main shaft 12. The lower end of the lever 18 is formed with a pin 18a engaging in a slot 19<a> in the end of the crank 19, this arrangement causing the cone 15 to remain stationary for a short time in its lowest position and so allow an increased feed towards the periphery of the producer. Modifications are described in which the upper ring 7 is formed as friction and clutch couplings, the latter construction being so arranged that, in addition to its rotary motion, the agitator is continuously reciprocated in a vertical direction. The cover of the producer is formed with a normally covered radial or diametric slot to permit removal of the agitator from the producer.
