Abstract
A casement window comprising a frame defining a window opening and at least one casement sash. The casement sash is movably mounted to the frame such that the casement sash is movable with respect to the frame between a closed position in which the casement sash occludes the window opening and an open position in which it does not. At least one heat-activated sealing element is arranged such that the sealing element is disposed between the frame and the casement sash when the casement sash is in the closed position. The heat-activated sealing element is configured to expand to provide a seal between the frame and the casement sash when heated to a predetermined activation temperature.
Claims (15)
1. A casement window comprising: a frame defining a window opening; at least one casement sash movably mounted to the frame such that the casement sash is movable with respect to the frame between a closed position in which the casement sash occludes the window opening and at least one open position in which it does not, and at least one heat-activated sealing element arranged such that the heat- activated sealing element is disposed between the frame and the casement sash when the casement sash is in the closed position and configured to expand to provide a seal between the frame and the casement sash when heated to a predetermined activation temperature.
2. The casement window of claim 1, wherein the frame extends around the periphery of the casement sash when the casement sash is in the closed position.
3. The casement window of claim 2, wherein the casement sash has a peripheral surface and the heat-activated sealing element is disposed between the peripheral surface of the casement sash and the frame.
4. The casement window of claim 3, wherein the peripheral surface extends perpendicularly with respect to the plane in which the casement sash extends.
5. The casement window of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the frame has an inward surface which opposes the casement sash and the heat-activated sealing element is located in a recess provided in the inward surface.
6. The casement window of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the heat-activated sealing element comprises a body portion and a fin portion, wherein the fin portion extends away from the body portion towards the casement sash.
7. The casement window of claim 6, wherein the fin portion is arranged to provide a preliminary seal between the casement sash and the frame.
8. The casement window of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the heat-activated sealing element comprises an intumescent material.
9. The casement window of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the heat-activated sealing element is activated when heated above a predetermined temperature.
10. The casement window of claim 9, wherein the predetermined temperature is at least 100 degrees centigrade.
11. The casement window of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the casement sash is rotatably mounted to the frame such that the casement sash is rotatable with respect to the frame between the closed position and the open position.

The casement window of any one of the preceding claims, wherein a smoke seal is arranged such that the smoke seal is disposed between the frame and the casement sash when the casement sash is in the closed position and the smoke seal is spaced from the heat-activated sealing element in a direction which is perpendicular to the to the plane in which the casement sash extends.
13. The casement window of claim 12, wherein the frame comprises a shoulder arranged to receive the casement sash in the closed position and the smoke seal is disposed at least partially between the shoulder and the casement sash.
14. The casement window of any one of claims 1 to 13, further comprising an actuator configured to move the casement sash from the open position to the closed position.
15. The casement window of claim 14, further comprising a control system configured to control the actuator to move the casement sash from the open position to the closed 15 position when it is determined that a fire is present in a building in which the casement window is installed. A method of operating a window in accordance with any one of the preceding claims comprising the steps: determining that a fire is present in the building in which the casement window is installed, and automatically moving the casement sash from the open position to the closed position.
