Description
Skin Treatment System The present invention relates to a skin treatment system and, in particular, to a skin system which includes a skin treatment apparatus that is intended for rental or lease applications.
Skin treatment apparatus are typically very expensive to buy. As such, there is a desire for a rental product. However, there may be periods in which the apparatus is not used much. Therefore, there is a need for a rental fee structure which is based on use of the apparatus, rather than on a fixed fee that is payable periodically.
Additionally, from the point of view of the owner of the apparatus, it is desirable to know the location of the apparatus.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a skin treatment system comprising a skin treatment apparatus and a remote server, wherein the skin treatment apparatus includes a source of electromagnetic or sonic waves; an applicator for directing the electromagnetic or sonic waves to a specific area of a patient's skin; a user input for selecting a predetermined application of the apparatus; a communication network transceiver; and a GPS locator; wherein the skin treatment apparatus is connected to the remote server via a communication network; and wherein a use signal relating to the selected predetermined application is transmitted to the remote server via the communication network.
The skin treatment apparatus of the invention may be rented to an end user where the end user pays a fee calculated on the basis of the use of the apparatus. The end user inputs the desired use of the apparatus via the user input. This generates a use signal corresponding to the selected use of the apparatus. The use signal is transmitted to the remote server, where the fee related to the indicated use may be calculated.
In an embodiment of the invention, the communication network is a wireless network and the communications network transceiver is connected to the wireless network. For example, the wireless network may be wi-fi internet network provided via a router at the location of the apparatus. Alternatively, it may be a mobile communication network. The communication network is necessary for the skin treatment apparatus to transmit data relating to the use of the apparatus to the remote server. It may also be used to transmit signals or data from the remote server to the skin treatment apparatus.
Suitably, the remote server records each use of the skin treatment apparatus. For example, the remote server may include a database and each use of the apparatus generates an entry in the database relating to that apparatus. The remote server may record the use of a plurality of different skin treatment apparatus. Accordingly, each skin treatment apparatus may include a unique identifier and the unique identifier is transmitted to the remote server each time a signal is transmitted from the skin treatment apparatus to the remote server via the communication network.
The electromagnetic or sonic waves may be in form of light waves or ultrasound. The waves are suitable focussed into a beam prior to application to the patient's skin. For example, the waves may be in the form of laser light. The laser light is suitably focussed into a beam. The apparatus may include two or more different sources of waves, such that the frequency of the waves may be selected by the user. Thus, in embodiments in which the skin treatment apparatus includes two or more sources of electromagnetic or sonic waves, the apparatus may include a control element that permits one of the sources of electromagnetic or sonic waves to be selected.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the operation of the skin treatment apparatus is controlled by a signal transmitted from the remote server to the skin treatment apparatus via the communications network. Accordingly, the apparatus may include a switch which is controlled by a signal received from the remote server via the communications network. In this way, the switch may have an operable configuration in which the apparatus is permitted to function, and it may have an inoperable configuration in which the operation of the apparatus is prevented. Thus, the remote server may transmit a signal to the skin treatment apparatus which configures the switch in either its operable or inoperable configurations.
Such a feature is useful for the owner of the apparatus to control its use. For example, if the end user is complying with the terms of the rental agreement, the control signal from the remote server renders the apparatus operable. However, if the end user contravenes the rental agreement, the owner of the apparatus may render the apparatus inoperable via a corresponding control signal transmitted to the apparatus from the remote server via the communication network.
Optionally, the switch may be biased to an inoperable configuration. In this way, a control signal is required from the remote server to activate the skin treatment apparatus. Such a feature is useful if the apparatus becomes disconnected from the communication network. Accordingly, the apparatus will only operate if it is connected to the communication network and is capable of transmitting a use signal to the remote server.
In an embodiment, the apparatus is suitably located in a predetermined location. If the apparatus is moved away from the predetermined location, the GPS locator will sense the movement. In such a situation, the skin treatment apparatus may be rendered inoperable by a control signal transmitted from the remote server to the apparatus in the event that the skin treatment apparatus is moved outside of a predetermined location as determined by the GPS locator. Thus, the skin treatment apparatus may only be operable when it is located at the predetermined location.
In an embodiments of the invention, each time the skin treatment apparatus transmits a use signal to the remote server, it also transmits GPS position data. Additionally or alternatively, the GPS locator may transmit data relating to the position of the skin treatment apparatus at predetermined intervals or in response to a location signal transmitted to the skin treatment apparatus from the remote server.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of managing the use of a skin treatment apparatus as defined anywhere herein in connection with the first aspect of the invention, the method comprising: providing an end user with the skin treatment apparatus; and connecting the skin treatment apparatus to a remote server via a communications network; wherein the skin treatment apparatus transmits to the remote server data relating to each predetermined application of the apparatus; the remote server records each predetermined application of the apparatus; a processor forming part of the remote server determines a fee for each predetermined application of the apparatus according to an algorithm; and the end user is charged each fee.
In this way, the rental costs of the skin treatment apparatus may be calculate on a "per use" basis.
As noted above, the skin treatment apparatus may include an operation switch. Accordingly, the method may further include the step of determining the location of the skin treatment apparatus via data transmitted to the remote server from the GPS locator; and enabling the operation of the skin treatment apparatus if the apparatus is within a predetermined area. Accordingly, the remote server may only transmit a control signal to configure the switch in its operable configuration if the remote server determines that the skin treatment apparatus is in the pre-determined location.
In an embodiment of the second aspect of the invention, the method further includes the step of generating a use signal when the user selects a predetermined application via the user input; and the use signal is transmitted to the remote server via the communications network. The use signal may be processed by the processor and the corresponding fee may be charged to the end user.
The skilled person will appreciate that the features described and defined in connection with the aspects of the invention and the embodiments thereof may be combined in any combination, regardless of whether the specific combination is expressly mentioned herein. Thus, all such combinations are considered to be made available to the skilled person.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of a system according to the first aspect of the invention.
For the avoidance of doubt, the skilled person will appreciate that in this specification, the terms "up", "down", "front", "rear", "upper", "lower", "width", etc. refer to the orientation of the components as found in the example when installed for normal use as shown in the Figures.
Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of a skin treatment system 2 according to the invention.
The skin treatment system 2 comprises a skin treatment apparatus 4 and a remote server 6.
The skin treatment apparatus 4 includes two separate sources of laser light: a diode laser source 8 and a Nd-YAG laser source 10, both of which are connected to an applicator 12 which is operated by a user and which directs a focussed beam of laser light of the relevant wavelength to a desired area of a patient's skin. The user selects the desired wavelength via a user input in the form of a touchscreen 14. The foregoing arrangement is common in certain known skin treatment apparatus.
The skilled person will appreciate that triple wavelength laser treatment apparatus are known. In such embodiments, the apparatus includes laser light generators that generate laser light having different wavelengths. Such wavelengths of laser light may be employed individually or as a combined therapy. For example, the apparatus may include an alexandrite laser source which generates laser light having a wavelength of 755nm, a diode laser source which generates laser light having a wavelength of 810nm and a Nd:YAG laser source which generates laser light having a wavelength of 1064nm. The different wavelengths of laser light are able to penetrate the skin to varying degrees. It is understood that the 1064nm wavelengths are able to penetrate deepest into the skin and the 755nm wavelengths have the least penetration. Accordingly, the applicator 12 may direct a light beam onto a patient's skin and the light beam may comprise a single wavelength of laser light (e.g. 755nm, 810nm or 1064nm) or it may comprise two separate wavelengths of laser light or it may comprise three separate wavelengths of laser light.
However, the skin treatment apparatus 4 of the present invention further includes a GPS sensor 16 and a wireless communication transceiver 18. The wireless communication transceiver 18 is capable of transmitting and receiving signals via a wireless network 20. The wireless network may be a wireless internet connection or it may be a mobile communication network, such as those used for carrying data to and from mobile devices.
The remote server 6 is connected to the skin treatment apparatus 4 via the wireless network 20.
The remote server includes a wireless transceiver 22, a processor 24 and a memory storage 26.
In use, the user selects via the touchscreen 14 the desired wavelength of laser and the intended treatment to be administered. The touchscreen 14 generates a user signal based on the selections made by the user and the user signal is transmitted to remote server 6 via the apparatus transceiver 18 and the server transceiver 22. At the same time, the apparatus transceiver 18 transmits location data obtained from the GPS sensor 16.
The processor 24 of the remote server 6 compares the GPS data with a database stored in the memory storage 26. If the GPS data indicates that the apparatus 4 is in the pre-determined location, the data relating to the intended treatment is processed by processor 24 and a corresponding fee is determined by an algorithm programmed into the processor 24. Data relating to the intended treatment and the associated fee are stored in the memory storage 26.
The processor 24 then transmits a control signal to the skin treatment apparatus 4 via the transceiver 22, communication network 20 and transceiver 18. The control signal configures a switch 28 disposed within the skin treatment apparatus 4 such that the switch 28 is in an operable configuration. In the operable configuration, the switch 28 transmits an operation signal to the selected one of the lasers 8, 10 such that the selected laser is operable for the selected treatment.
After the selected treatment has ended, the switch 28 is re-set to its inoperable configuration.
In the event that the GPS data indicates that the skin treatment apparatus 4 is not in the pre-determined location, no control signal is sent to the skin treatment apparatus 4. In this case, the switch 28 remains in an inoperable configuration and the user is not able to use the skin treatment apparatus 4.
Periodically, the treatment data and associated fee data stored in the memory storage 26 are used to generate an invoice, which is sent to the user.
