Abstract

261,569. Smith, G. R. Jan. 7, 1926. Pile-fabric looms.-In looms for weaving carpets and like loop-pile fabrics, at least two sets of grippers for the selected pile warps are provided between the pile warp beam or creel and the loop-forming mechanism, so that one row of loops may be cut before the next row is formed, and the tension on the pile warps is reduced. As shown, three sets of grippers f, g, h are employed. 'The grippers f comprise a series of teeth adapted to pierce the pile threads e and to move in curved guides f<1> so that, as the grippers rise and fall, thev move substantially in an arc of a circle centred at the fell d of the fabric. The grippers g, which may be similar to the grippers f, comprise sets of fixed and relatively-movable notched bars adapted to clamp the pile thread. The grippers h comprise notched bars h<2> adapted to co-operate with rods h<1> for clamping the pile threads from the creels. When a pile warp beam is employed, the grippers h may be dispensed with. In operation, the selected pile warps are raised into engagement with the grippers f, which then rise. The pile warps are then moved into engagement with the grippers g, which close and clamp these. The grippers then move forwardly and draw off sufficient pile warps to form the loops, and the grippers h close. As the pile warps descend, they are forced from the grippers f, g, so that the loop-forming means may draw forward the slack, the grippers g being opened. The rearmost grippers h move forwardly as the binder picks are being woven in, and remain closed until the grippers g are again ready to move forwardly. when the grippers h open and move to their initial position. The loops may be formed over transverse wires, by means of hooks, or otherwise.
