Abstract

Combined turning, milling, and boring machines, - In boring and facing machines of the type in which a rotary facing head having a tool slide traversed thereon is adapted to be raised or lowered for adjusting the head or for milling-operations, and in which the work tables B, C, are provided with longitudinal and transverse traversing-motions, means are provided for controlling the quick power traverse and the automatic feed motions of the tables and of the headstock. The shaft k is driven for the slow feed movement from the feed-box (not shown) through bevel gearing s, spur gearing p, worm gearing n, m, and clutch g. For the quick power traverse movements the shaft k is driven from the mainshaft of the machine through a chain wheel 23, reversing bevel gearing 18 and spur gearing 17. The two speeds of the shaft are controlled from a handle b adapted to impart either rotary or axial movement to a shaft a. For the slow speed the shaft is moved axially by rack and sector gear thus actuating the gearing h to engage the clutch g with the wheel m. In this position of the shaft a, a projection i engages a recess j to prevent the rotary movement. For the high speed the shaft a is lowered and then rotated in either direction, this movement actuating the reversing bevel gearing through lever mechanism to drive the shaft k from the chainwheel 23. The motion of the shaft k is selectively transmitted to the longitudinal or transverse table feeds or to the headstock traversing gear by means of a control handle x imparting rotary and axial movement to the shaft y. The table feeds are obtained by engaging a clutch u with a wheel w from which motion is transmitted through spur wheel 11<b>, spiral gearing 11 and' spur gears 9, 10 to the shafts 8, 8<a> actuating the transverse and longitudinal feeds respectively. The shafts 8, 8<a> are selectively driven by means of clutches 6, 7, actuated by racks 4, 5 operated by rotary movements of the handle x. The headstock traverse is obtained by engaging the clutch u with a wheel v which is connected tbrough spur gears 12, 13 and bevel gears 15 with the vertical screw 15<a>. The handle x may work in a gate to prevent incorrect engagement of the gears. A hand-wheel 28 may rotate the shaft k through gears 29, 30, for hand-setting.
