Description

CLADDING RESTRAINT AND METHOD OF SECURING CLADDING PANELS TO A BUILDING STRUCTURE
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a cladding restraint for use in mounting cladding panels on buildings and to a method of securing cladding panels to a building structure..
Background to the Invention
Buildings of the type having an inner structure with cladding panels attached thereto are usually provided with supports to carry the vertical loading of the cladding panels and with restraints to hold the cladding panels against lat-eral loads such as those due to wind pressure. The cladding restraints typically comprise an anchor attached to or embedded in the cladding panel, a fixing attached to the inner structure of the building, and a threaded bar extending between the anchor and the fixing with a nut for adjustment of the position of the cladding panel. Attaching the restraint is usually achieved by attaching the threaded bar to the cladding panel anchor with the fixing located on the bar and then securing the fixing to the building structure, for example a floor slab. The fixing is attached to the slab by means of a pair of bolts, which may be embedded in the slab or may be 1-bolts engaging in a channel embedded in the slab, to hold the fixing, and with it the threaded bar, against pivoting, with consequen-tial displacement of the cladding panel.
The attachment of the fixing during fitting of the cladding panel may require some lateral adjustment and can be relatively time-consuming because of the need to align and secure the two bolts before adjustment of the position of the cladding panel relative to the slab can be effected by the nut on the thread-ed bar.
Summary of the Invention
According to the invention, there is provided a cladding restraint for use in securing cladding panels to a building structure, and a method of securing cladding panels to a building structure, as set out in the claims. -2 -
The cladding restraint of the invention simplifies installation of cladding panels, requiring only one fixing bolt to connect to the anchor in the building structure.
Brief Description of the Drawings
In the drawings, which illustrate an exemplary embodiment of the re-straint of the invention: Figure 1 is an isometric view of a part of a building with a cladding panel attached and including a cladding restraint, viewed from the cladding panel exterior; Figure 2 is a perspective view from below and beneath the building com-ponent, corresponding to that of Figure 1, but with the first anchor set at 90 degrees to that in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is an enlarged isometric view of the holding block forming part of the restraint of the invention.
Detailed Description of the Illustrated Embodiment
Referring first to Figures 1 and 2, the cladding restraint has a first anchor 1 which is embedded in the cladding panel 2 in use, for example when the panel is cast in concrete or other setting material. The first anchor is in the form of a channel section having inwardly-directed flanges 3 on opposed sides of its open face to define a slot 3a having a smaller width than that of the channel within the channel member so as to retain in the channel a rectangular nut 4. A spaced pair of anchor pins 5 are welded in the rear wall la of the anchor 1, the pins 5 having enlarged heads 5a at the distal ends thereof to ensure that the anchor is held firmly embedded in the panel 2. A threaded bar 6 is screwed into the rectangular nut 4 and carries a rectangular metal plate 7 bearing against the external face of the anchor 1, a spring washer 8 and a nut 9 to secure the threaded bar 6 relative to the anchor.
The threaded bar 6 mounts at its distal end a holding block 10, which has a first passage 11 therethrough, as can be seen more clearly from Figure 3, through which the bar 6 extends in use. The bar carries two retaining nuts 12 and associated washers 12a which in use engage opposed sides of the block 10. A second anchor 13, having an identical structure to that of the first anchor -3 - 1 (the same reference signs being used for like parts thereof), is embedded in a building component such as a concrete floor slab 14, with the open slot 3a of the anchor 13 facing downwardly from the underside of the slab 14. While the first anchor 1 is embedded in the cladding panel 2 with a rectangular nut 4 therein, the second anchor is left empty.
The holding block 10 has a second passage 15 therethrough whose longitudinal axis extends in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the first passage 11. The block 10 is further provided with tabs 16 and 17 of narrower width than the body of the block and extending from the surface thereof to on either side of the opening of the second passage 15 and extending in a di-rection parallel to the longitudinal axis of the second passage. The first passage 11 opens through opposed curved faces 18 and 19 of the block 10 and has a cross-section which is oval, i.e. it has a greater dimension laterally of the block as illustrated in Figure 3, than in the direction normal thereto, thereby allowing some lateral adjustment of the threaded bar during installation of the cladding panel, as explained hereinafter.
Installation of the cladding panel restraint is as follows. The cladding panel 2 will be supported vertically in conventional manner by support members attached to the building structure on which the panel rests. It is restrained against outward movement relative to the building by means of cladding re-straints in accordance with the invention. The head of a T-bolt 20 is inserted through the slot 3a of the second anchor and is rotated so that the head engages against the flanges 3 inside the channel to hold the bolt 20 in place in the second anchor. The holding block 10 is then positioned over the T-bolt 20 so that the bolt passes through the second passage 15 and the tabs 16 and 17 are received through the slot 3a, engaging the flanges 3. A nut 21 is threaded on to the free end of the bolt 20 to engage the block and secure it in the anchor 13. The approximate alignment of the threaded bar 6 with the anchor 13 is achieved by adjusting the initial position of the T-bolt 20 therein, but some misalignment can be accommodated by the oval cross-section of the first passage 11. The opposed curved faces 18 against which the retaining nuts 12 bear (via dished washers 12a -Figure 2) ensure that, as the nuts 12 on the threaded bar 6 are -4 -tightened against the holding block 10 to fix the position of the cladding panel 2 relative to the building structure, the misalignment is accommodated without causing any twisting of the block 10 relative to the anchor 13. -5 -
