Abstract

261,214. Watkins, W. E. Jan. 11, 1026. Lubricants.-Lubrication of the friction surfaces of metal parts adapted to work at high temperatures is ensured by applying to the parts. while cold, a mineral oil having an asphaltic base, and afterwards subjecting the parts to sufficient heat, under non-oxidizing conditions, to volatilize the lighter constituents of the oil and to produce on the parts a solid, adherent, lubricating layer of carbonaceous coke. As applied to a ferrous chain conveyer carrying metals through a furnace for heat treatment. the oil is allowed to drip on the chain just before it first enters the furnace, in which reducing or neutral conditions prevail. During the passage of the chain through the furnace, the volatile constituents pass off, leaving on the chain a relatively permanent lubricating layer. Specification 107,201, [Class 95, Paints &c.], is referred to.
