Abstract

Loud-speakers; magnetic instruments; diaphragms.-An acoustic device applicable to telephone receivers and transmitters &c. comprises a large diaphragm mounted in a casing having a main portion of domed conical or like form and an annular portion which extends laterally beyond the periphery of the diaphragm and is of larger external diameter than the main portion of the casing. Fig. 4 shows a loud-speaker embodying the invention. The casing 1 is of stepped contour and may have a number of small holes formed therein. The diaphragm is gripped between corrugations 9 on rings 5, 6 which have flanges 7, 8 fitting tightly together. The flange 8 also fits tightly over a flange 3 on the casing 1, the outer portion of which, together with the rings 5, 6, forms an annular space beyond the periphery of the diaphragm. Within the casing 1 is a smaller casing 33, containing an electromagnetic receiver comprising a reed 31, which is adjustable with respect to the wound poles of the magnet 39. The adjustment is effected by means of a screw 38, acting on a spring 35, which is connected to the reed. The apex of the diaphragm is connected to the reed by a rod 13. A modified form of casing and diaphragm mounting is shown in Fig. 5. Instead of providing holes in the casing, portions of the casing may be made elastic, or it may be porous. Metals such as aluminium, iron, or brass may be used in making the casing, or non-metallic substances such as wood or papier-machÚ may be used. The first Provisional Specification describes in detail various modified constructions of the casing of the sound-box. The diaphragm may, according to the Provisional Specifications, be made of celluloid.
