Abstract
A vehicular camera assembly comprising: an optical module having a lens barrel and lens 4, an image sensor coupled to a printed circuit board (PCB) and the lens, a defrosting module comprising a heater 1, and a housing having upper and lower parts wherein the upper housing has an opening in which to insert the heater; the opening comprising an outer brim 6 with multiple upward facing pockets, p. The pockets may receive glue and the width of each pocket or groove may exceed half of the width of the outer brim. The assembly may be for surround-view type cameras.
Description
Description
Vehicular Camera Assembly The invention relates to a vehicular camera assembly, and more specifically to a vehicular surround view camera assembly.
For a new generation of surround view cameras, a defrosting module comprising a heater has been implemented besides an optical module (imager and lens), the entire assembly being enclosed within a two-part housing, namely an upper housing part and a lower housing part welded together. The heater is seated on a printed circuit board (FOB) and is provided with crushing features by means of which it is snapped onto the upper housing part. The housing and the heater are made of different materials (aluminum and plastic material, respectively).
There are some major drawbacks related to this arrangement: 20 the press-fit between housing and heater may get lose in time due to aging, vibrations, thermal shocks. If the heater gets lose, the contact between the heater and printed circuit board can be interrupted, leading to a malfunction of the defrosting system. Potential damage of printed circuit board due to vi-25 brations and scratches may lead also to cleanliness issues (impurities on the imager) or short circuit on the printed circuit board.
The technical problem to be solved, in this context, is the 30 fixation of the heater over lifetime of the camera assembly.
Therefore, the object of the invention is to prevent the drawbacks of the mentioned prior art and to provide an alternative design for such a camera assembly.
This objective is achieved according to the invention by means of the technical characteristics mentioned in the independent claims, namely a surround view camera assembly with an enhanced 5 durability and reliability.
Further advantageous embodiments are the subject matter of the dependent claims.
1. The first subject-matter of the present invention is a vehicular camera assembly comprising an optical module including a lens barrel with a lens, a PCB coupled with the lens, and an image sensor coupled with the PCB, a defrosting module including a heater, and a two-part housing, namely an upper housing and a lower housing. The upper housing has an opening through which the respective heater is inserted, the opening being delimited by an outer brim. The outer brim is provided with a multitude of upward facing pockets and adapted to be filled with glue.
The main advantages of invention are: robust fixation over lifetime, - no additional equipment/costs and production time, - easy to implement (no change of the already assembling 25 line).
Further special features and advantages of the present invention can be taken from the following description of advantageous embodiments by way of the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 presents a view of a prior art surround view camera assembly comprising a heater and an upper housing, Fig. 2 illustrates a vehicular camera assembly without implementing glue pockets, Fig. 3 illustrates a vehicular camera assembly with glue pockets according to invention, Fig. 4a, 4b present a view and a section through an upper housing without glue pockets, Fig. 5a, 5b present a view and a section through an upper housing of the vehicular camera assembly according to invention, Fig. 6a, 6b present a section through the vehicular camera assembly, comprising the upper housing and the heater, Fig. 7 shows a detail from Fig. 6a, Fig. 8 shows details concerning the maximum height of glue in the pocket.
Referring now to Fig. 1, it is shown a part of a prior art surround view camera assembly. Such an assembly comprises a heater 1 with a substantially cylindrical body provided with crushing features 2. Heater 1 is inserted through an opening of an upper housing part 3 and held in place by means of crushing features 2; this way, a press-fit is ensured between heater 1 and upper housing 3.
Fig. 2 illustrates a surround view camera assembly from prior art (without glue pockets) provided with lens 4 glued on upper housing 3 by means of a glue layer 5.
Fig. 3 illustrates an embodiment according to invention of a surround view camera assembly. This embodiment comprises a multitude of glue pockets p facing upwards, carved out on an outer brim 6 of the upper housing part 3 and placed at equal distances one to another. Each glue pocket p has a configuration of vertical groove of a predetermined width and height, calculated as to cover and to distribute the volume of glue needed to ensure a good, stable adhesive force between housing and heater. In this respect, while the width of glue pocket p is somehow limited by the width of outer brim 6, height could compensate.
Figures 4a, 4b respectively show a view and an A-A section of 5 upper housing without glue pockets. Figures 5a, 5b show similar view and a B-B section of upper housing provided with aforementioned glue pockets p, according to invention.
Figures 6a, 6b present a section C-C through the surround view 10 assembly, comprising the upper housing and the heater, as well as a detail D. Fig. 7 shows a detail D from Fig. 6a, illustrating the glue pocket p geometry.
Fig. 8 shows a detailed section concerning the glue filing the space defined by a glue pocket p. In the following description, it is described the solution of 20 implementing glue pocket geometries in the upper housing part, so when the lens gluing process begin, pockets p are also filed up with glue.
Next, the glue is applied by means of a dispensing needle (not part of this invention). What differs from a normal gluing process is that when the dispensing needle goes over each pocket, the glue must be applied also inside the pocket. The glue quantity depends on the pocket size and volume, but it is recommended not to exceed a predetermined height referred as X height in Fig. 8, otherwise it will overflow.
However, while certain embodiments of the present invention have been described in detail, those familiar with the art to which this invention relates will recognize various alternative designs and embodiments for practicing the invention as defined by the following claims.
