Abstract

260,678. White, A. E., (Dayton Scale Co.). Aug. 5, 1925. Multiple - indication apparatus. - A weighing- scale is provided with a variable ratio device controlled by the operator comprising a plurality of levers of different multiplying ratios, certain or all of which levers are adapted to be rendered active or inactive by manual selection so that a plurality of ratios greater than the number of levers employed may be obtained. The invention is of general application, but is preferably applied to a machine in which the beam is not subject to variable displacements under varying loads, e.g. the machines described in Specifications 182,665 and 260,679, [both in Class 143, Weighing-apparatus]. As shown diagrammatically in Fig. 9, the weigh-pan 28 of a weighing- scale is connected to the weighbeam 21 through one or more of a system of levers corresponding to different leverage ratios. Levers 35, 37, 39, 41 correspond to multiplying ratios of 1, 2, 2, 4, and levers 35<a>, 37<a>, 39<a>, 41a to ratios of 10, 20, 20, 40 respectively. Each lever is pivoted at the outer end to the frame, and is provided near the inner end with a knife-edge 43 adapted to bear, when the lever is in active position, upon one of a series of bearing plates 52 which are mounted in stirrups 51, Fig. 5, pivoted to a frame 50 depending from the beam. A pivoted plate 53 is disposed adjacent the inner end of each lever and is adapted upon the energization of a cooperating electro-magnet 59, Fig. 10, to tilt and thereby lift the lever out of action. The deadweight of the lever is compensated for by a lever 35<c> which is pivoted to the frame and normally bears upon the plate 53, but which, upon the tilting of the plate is deposited upon the bearing plate 52. The electro-magnets are operated by two series of keys 63, 64 corresponding to the tens and units respectively. Each key is provjded on its underside with projections 65 adapted to engage levers 66, which when depressed close contacts 67 in the circuits of the magnets, thereby leaving in acting position only that weighing-lever or combination of levers which corresponds to the desired ratio. In operation, the keys corresponding to the price per unit weights of the goods being weighed are depressed, and the value of the goods is automatically indicated on the weights chart or is printed by printing means connected thereto. The invention may also be applied to article-counting weighing scales.
