Description

A CONTAINER WHICH IS FOR
BEING CARRIED ON A SHOULDER OF A PERSON
This invention relates to a container and, more especially, this invention relates to a container which is for being carried on a shoulder of a person.
For ease of carrying, containers are often carried on a shoulder of a person, This is especially so in the building industry where containers are often used for carrying wet building materials such as cement, concrete and mortar. In the building industry, the containers are produced by cutting the top off known large capacity water bottles. Whilst the modified water bottles are more convenient to carry than traditional buckets, the modified water bottles are not entirely satisfactory. More specifically, they are not as comfortable as would be desired.
It is an aim of the present invention to avoid or reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a container which is for being carried on a shoulder of a person, which container comprises: (i) a body portion which is for receiving material to be carried and which comprises a base, a side wall which upstands from the base, and a rim defining an opening for the body portion; (ii) a recess for receiving the shoulder of the person; and (in) a first handle, and wherein: (iv) the first handle is a recessed first handle; and (v) the first handle is on a side of the container opposite the recess for receiving the shoulder of the person, whereby in use on the person's shoulder the first handle receives a first hand of the person which is on the same side of the person as the shoulder.
The container of the present invention enables materials to be carried comfortably on the shoulder of the person. The container may be used for containing a wide variety of different types of materials. Thus, for example, the container may be used in the building industry for enabling wet building materials such for example as cement, concrete and mortar to be carried. The container may also be used in the building industry for containing other materials such for example as sand or bricks. The container may be used in other industries. Thus, for example, the container may be used in the agricultural industry for carrying feed for animals, for example feed for chickens, turkeys and pigs. The container may also be used for carrying water from a water source to remote locations and for a variety of uses.
The container may be one in which the recess for receiving the shoulder is formed in a peripheral edge of the base. In this case, the recess for the shoulder of the person may extend over the base and the side wall of the body portion.
The recess for the shoulder of the person is preferably a part circular recess. Other shapes for the recess may be employed.
Preferably, the container is one in which the rim of the body portion is a reinforced rim. The reinforced rim may be helpful in avoiding deformation of the body portion when carrying heavy liquid products such for example as the above mentioned liquid products in the building industry. The rim of the body portion may be reinforced in any desired manner, for example by external reinforcing ribs and/or by internal strengthening employing, for example, one or more internal wires, The container may be one which includes a second handle for receiving a second hand of the person, and in which the second handle is a recessed handle which is positioned for enabling the container to be held by both the first and second hands of the person and to be tipped for emptying the material from the container.
Preferably, the second handle is in the base of the body portion. The second handle may be positioned elsewhere on the container if desired, for example on the side wall of the body portion.
Preferably, the second handle is in a side of the base of the body portion which is opposite the recess for receiving the shoulder of the person. This positioning of the second handle is convenient for enabling balanced tipping of the container for emptying purposes. The second handle may be positioned elsewhere on the base of the container if desired.
The container may be one which includes a spout for use in pouring the material from the container. The spout may be advantageous for ensuring accurate pouring. If the container is manufactured with the spout, then the spout can be used where accurate pouring is required, and the spout can be ignored if quick mass tipping of the material from the container is required.
Preferably, the spout is formed in the rim of the body portion. The spout may be positioned elsewhere if desired.
The container may be one in which the base of the body portion is a reinforced base. Any reinforcing for the base may be employed. Thus, for example, the base may be reinforced in the same way as the rim is reinforced.
The container may be one in which the side wall is a reinforced side wall. The reinforced side wall may comprise reinforcing ribs which extend vertically and/or horizontally when the container is upright.
Preferably, the container is a moulded container. The container is then able to be moulded as a one-piece container which is conveniently used, which is easily cleaned, and which does not have parts which may be lost. Preferably the container is moulded from a plastics material. Any suitable and appropriate plastics material may be employed including, for example, polyethylene and nylon.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a container of the present invention and which is being carried on a shoulder of a person; Figure 2 is a perspective view from one side and below of the container as shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is an underneath view like Figure 2 but taken from a different angle and the other side of the container to that shown in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a perspective view from above and one side of the container shown in Figure 1; and Figure 5 is a view from above like Figure 4 but taken from the other side of the container to that shown in Figure 4.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a container 2. The container 2 is shown in Figure 1 being carried on a shoulder 4 of a person 6. The container 2 comprises a body portion 8 which is for receiving material to be carried. The body portion 8 comprises a base 10, a side wall 12 which upstands from the base 10 and a rim 14 defining an opening 16 in the body portion 8.
The container 2 comprises a recess 18 for receiving the shoulder 4 of the person 6. The container 2 also comprises a first handle 20.
The first handle 20 is a recessed first handle 20. The first handle 20 is on a side 22 of the container 2 opposite the recess 18 for receiving the shoulder 4 of the person 6. Thus in use of the container 2 on the person's shoulder and as shown in Figure 1, the first handle 20 receives a first hand 24 of the person 6 with the first hand 24 being on the same side of the person 6 as the shoulder The recess 18 for receiving the shoulder 4 is formed in a peripheral edge 26 of the base 10. The recess 18 for the shoulder 4 of the person 6 extends over the base 10 and the side wall 12 of the body portion 8. The recess 18 for the shoulder 4 of the person 6 is a part circular recess as can best be appreciated from Figures 2 and 3.
The container 2 is such that the rim 14 of the body portion 8 is a reinforced rim 14. The rim 14 may be reinforced with any reinforcing devices and/or configurations.
The container 2 includes a second handle 28 as shown in Figures 2 and 3. The second handle 28 is for receiving a second hand 30 of the person 4. The second handle 28 is a recessed second handle 28. The second handle 28 is positioned for enabling the container 2 to be held by both of the first and second hands 24, 30 of the person 6 and to be tipped for emptying the material from the container 2. As shown in Figures 2 and 3, the second handle 28 is in the base 10 of the body portion 8. More specifically, the second handle 28 is on a side 32 of the base 10 of the body portion 8 which is opposite the recess 18 for receiving the shoulder 4 of the person 6.
The container 2 includes a spout 34 for use in pouring the material from the container 2. The spout 34 is formed in the rim 14 of the body portion 8.
The base 10 of the body portion 8 is a reinforced base 10. The base may be reinforced in any desired manner, for example in the same manner as the rim 14 is reinforced.
The container 2 is such that the side wall 12 is a reinforced side wall 12. The reinforced side wall 12 comprises reinforcing ribs 36, 38. As shown in Figure 4, the reinforcing ribs 36 extend vertically of the side wall 12, and the reinforcing ribs 38 extend horizontally of the side wall 12.
The container 2 is a moulded container 2, More specifically, the container 2 is a one piece moulded container which is moulded from a plastics material. Any suitable plastics material may be employed.
The container 2 is thus easily produced when made as a one piece moulding. Because the container is easily manufactured, it may be inexpensive to produce. The container 2 is easily carried as can be appreciated from Figure 1. The container 2 is able to be robust in use and easy to clean. The container 2 may be produced such that the body portion 8 is tubular as shown. Alternatively, for example, the side wall 12 may taper inwardly from the rim 14 towards the base 10.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the container 2 may be produced in another shape. The spout 34 may be of another shape or it may be omitted entirely. Other configurations for the ribs 36, 38 may be employed. The first handle 20 is recessed by being located in a recess 40 formed in the body portion 8. This recess 40 may be of other shapes than the shape shown. Similarly, the shape of the second handle 28 may be different from that shown. The container 2 is shown in Figure 1 as being used in the building industry. However, the container 2 may be used in other industries and for containing any suitable and required liquid or solid materials. Individual components shown in the drawings are not limited to use in their drawings and they may be used in other drawings and in all aspects of the invention. The invention also extends to the individual components mentioned and/or shown above, taken singly or in any combination.
