Winding-machines; twist tubes and like twisters; spindle apparatus.-Relates to twisting and winding apparatus of the kind wherein the yarn is led through a hollow spindle to a rotary yarn-container wherein it is laid in layers transverse to the axis of rotation by means of a winding-head. The winding-head, which comprises a slotted presser plate 9, a yarn-laying arm 11, means to traverse the arm longitudinally of the slot in the plate, and means to rotate the plate and yarn-container 1 relatively to each other, is fast on the spindle and carries the container, in which the yarn mass 4 is built between the plate and a plug 3 adapted to slide downwardly, by means of a housing, so that the thrust thereon is borne by the spindle bearings. The presser plate is connected by studs 12 to a plate 13 fast on the lower end of the spindle 6, and the container is secured by means of spring-controlled pins 18 to a housing 17 freely mounted on the winding-head. A plate 14 is fast upon the spindle and carries planet wheels 26, which are geared with an independently driven pinion 22 and are connected with a gear 29 on the hub of the housing and with a gear 36 fast on a sleeve 35 which carries a cam 31. The speed of the yarn-container is varied relatively to that of the spindle and the winding-head by varying the speed of a wheel 30 geared to the pinion 22. The cam 31 operates the arm 11 by means of a vertical rocking shaft 32 and arm 33, and similarly operates a compensating-arm 37 which engages the yarn and maintains it at a uniform tension. Capstan wheels 42, 43 which draw the yarn from the supply are mounted on a head 46 fast on the spindle and are geared with a driven pinion 48. The step bearing 2, Fig. 4, of the container is rotatably mounted in the upper end of a plunger 52, which is raised in a cylinder 53 to move the yarn container into operative engagement with the housing by means of compressed air, and is maintained in its elevated position during the winding of the yarn by means of a pin 56 which may be withdrawn by means of a treadle or arm 60. In a group of devices the locking- pins may all be withdrawn simultaneously by operating the shaft 62 upon which the treadles 60 are mounted, pins 63 operated by the treadles engaging slots 65 in the shaft to allow of individual operation by means of the treadles if desired.
