Description

Apparatus for use with a Fastener
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present disclosure relates to an apparatus for limiting compression of opposing sidewalls of a housing by a fastener.
BACKGROUND
When a fastener is inserted through sidewalls of a housing, the fastener can exert excessive pressure on the sidewalls of the housing. Embodiments of the present invention aim to reduce problems associated with a fastener exerting a compressive force on a housing.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
One or more embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows an apparatus according to an embodiment of the invention Figure 2 shows a housing according to an embodiment of the invention Figure 3 shows a housing with an end cap according to an embodiment of the invention; Figure 4 shows an assembly according to an embodiment of the invention; and Figure 5 shows a vehicle in accordance with an embodiment of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Figures 1-4 show an apparatus for limiting compression of opposing sidewalls of a housing, a housing and an assembly according to embodiments of the invention. Figure 5 illustrates a vehicle comprising an apparatus for limiting compression or an assembly according to an embodiment of the invention. Reference will be made to the figures in the description which follows. It will be appreciated that not all parts are indicated with reference numerals in all drawings for clarity.
A pair 100 of apparatus 110, 120 for limiting compression of opposing sidewalls 210, 220 of a housing by a fastener are shown and denoted together with reference numeral 100. Description will be provided with reference to one of the apparatus 110 of the pair 100 with it being appreciated that the other, counterpart, apparatus 120 has like features. The counterpart apparatus 120 is another apparatus, identical to apparatus 110, for limiting compression of the opposing sidewalls 210, 220 of the housing.
The apparatus 110 comprises an elongate hollow shaft 111. The shaft 111 is for insertion through an aperture 240 in a first sidewall 210 of a housing 200 as will be described. The shaft 111 is arranged for receiving a fastener there-through, along an aperture 113 coaxial with the shaft 111. The shaft 111 has a non-circular shaped 114, 115 circumferential outer profile for engaging with a corresponding interior shape of at least a portion of the aperture 240, such that the shaft 111 resists rotation within the aperture 240 when the fastener is rotated. In the illustrated embodiment the shaft 111 has a D-shaped shaped 114, 115 circumferential outer profile, with a generally planar face 114 and a curved surface 115.
However it will be appreciated that other shaped shafts may be envisaged, such as polygon i.e. star-shaped for example.
The apparatus 110 comprises an anti-rotation member 112 which is arranged at a first end of the shaft 111. The anti-rotation member 112 is arranged to extend perpendicularly to the shaft 111. The anti-rotation member 112 is arranged to, in use, extend parallel to an outer surface of the first sidewall 210 of the housing adjacent to the aperture 240. The anti-rotation member 112 comprises an engagement feature 116, 117 which is arranged to, in use as illustrated in Figure 1, engage with the counterpart apparatus 120 to distribute torque applied by the fastener there-between.
The engagement feature 116, 117 is shaped to interlock with a corresponding engagement feature of the counterpart apparatus 120. The engagement feature 116, 117 in the illustrated embodiment comprises one or more outwardly extending fingers 117 and one or more notches 116, wherein each of the one or more fingers 117 is arranged to interlock into a corresponding notch of the engagement feature of the counterpart apparatus 120 and each of the one or more notches 116 is arranged to receive a corresponding finger of the engagement feature of the counterpart apparatus 120 as illustrated. Other arrangements of features may be envisaged. Advantageously the engagement features 116, 117 of the pair 100 of apparatus have only one i.e. a unique interlocking arrangement to guide correct assembly.
The anti-rotation member 112 in the illustrated embodiment is a generally planar member 112 arranged such that a side-edge thereof abuts the side-edge of the anti-rotation member of the counterpart apparatus 120. The planar member is arranged to, in use, extend parallel to the outer surface of the first sidewall 240 of the housing 200. When at least a portion of the fastener is rotated, the interlocking of the pair 100 of apparatus 110, 120 resists corresponding rotation to prevent movement of the apparatus 110, 120 by the tightening of the fastener.
Particularly to accommodate a difference in size, such as manufacturing variability, between a length of the shaft 111 and a width of the housing 200 between the first sidewall 210 and the second sidewall 220, a deformable material is associated with the anti-rotation member 112 for filling a gap between the anti-rotation member 112 and the outer surface of the first sidewall 210. The deformable material may be arranged on an under-side of the planar anti-rotation member 112 such that, in use, the deformable material is located between the first sidewall and the planar member 112. In some embodiments, the deformable material may be an adhesive associated with the anti-rotation member 112 for securely attaching the anti-rotation member 112 to the outer surface of the first sidewall 240. The adhesive may be a low viscosity adhesive or an epoxy adhesive, although other materials may be envisaged as appropriate.
The housing 200 comprises the first sidewall 210 and the second sidewall 220 which are arranged in generally parallel relation, separated and held in spaced-apart relation by a top portion 230 of the housing 200. In the illustrated embodiment a bottom 250 of the housing is formed by a U-shaped channel against, or into which, the sidewalls 210, 220 abut or are received. However it will be realised that other arrangements of a housing having first and second sidewalls 210, 220 may be envisaged. In use, when a fastener such as an elongate fastener is received through the sidewalls 210, 220 a compressive force may be exerted between the sidewalls 210, 220 which may deform the sidewalls 210, 220. The fastener may be a rod having a threaded end onto which a nut is received and rotatably tightened or a bolt which is inserted through the housing 200 such that a threaded end thereof is received in a corresponding threaded aperture of a support 400 such as a mount 400 or a baseplate 400 as in Figure 4. The baseplate may be associated with a vehicle as will be described.
As noted above, in the first sidewall the aperture 240 is present through which the shaft 111 is received. The aperture may be a slot 240, such as illustrated in Figure 2 i.e. an open-sided aperture 240. Where the aperture 240 is close to an edge of the sidewall 210 use of a slot may avoid a relatively thin portion of the sidewall 210 existing between the aperture 240 and the edge of the sidewall 210 which may be prone to damage or failure, such as when stamping the housing from a metal sheet.
The second sidewall 220 comprises a corresponding aperture 260 therein. The apertures 240, 260 in the sidewalls 210, 220 are aligned to receive the fastener therethrough. The fastener may be arranged to extend through the aperture 260 in the second sidewall 220 to be received in the baseplate 400 to secure the housing thereto. The second sidewall of the housing 220 is arranged adjacent to the support 400 or baseplate 400 and the fastener is received into the aperture of the support 400.
As illustrated in Figures 3 & 4 a body 300 is received in the housing 200 between the first and second sidewalls 210, 220. During assembly, the housing 200 may be formed and the body 300 received between the sidewalls 210, 220. The body 300 may form an endcap of the housing 200. A pair of apparatus 110, 120 may then be inserted through corresponding apertures in the first and second sidewalls 210, 220 of the housing 200 and, in some embodiments, through a portion 310 of the endcap 300. A second end of shaft 111 distal from the member 112 may be arranged to abut a surface within the housing 200. The surface may be an interior surface of the second sidewall 220 or of the body 300.
In use, when the fastener exerts a compressive force between the sidewalls 210, 220 of the housing 200 the apparatus 110, 120 resists the compressive force exerted by the fastener i.e. exerts a corresponding outward force between the sidewalls to, advantageously, reduce deformation of the sidewalls due to the fastener.
The housing 200 may be a housing of a battery module. Thus the assembly may form a battery. For example, a plurality of cells may be arranged within the housing 200 to form a battery. The battery may be a battery suitable for an electric vehicle 500. Thus a vehicle 500 such as shown in Figure 5 may comprise an embodiment of the invention.
It will be appreciated that various changes and modifications can be made to the present invention without departing from the scope of the present application.
