Abstract

Identification of an individual by measuring and recording an individual’s physical features and using the data to authenticate an individual against the initial measurements. The apparatus has a free-standing structure supporting a height adjustable scanning device 1. The device has an aperture where the individual places their head to allow their face to be scanned e.g. by laser line triangulation, laser spot or white light reflection. The scanned data is used to produce a 3D computer model that is used to determine the measurements of individual’s facial features. The height of the scanning device may also be use used to record the individual’s height. The base 2 of the free-standing structure may have a footprint device 5 and weighing device 3, which takes a footprint of the individual when they stand on the device with no shoes on and measure the weight of the individual. The footprint may be taken via a pressure pad mechanical sensors or touch screen resistive technology or optical scanning e.g. light reflective detection or light occluding detecting or heat map.

Description

Intellectual Property Office Application No G132102670.3 RUM Date:27 August 2021 The following terms are registered trade marks and should be read as such wherever they occur in this document: Cartesian Intellectual Property Office is an operating name of the Patent Office www.gov.uk/ipo Individual dentification System This invention relates to the identification of an individual, more specifically it relates to the unique identification of any individual by use of the science of Anthropometry.
It is known from GB2414546A Facescan 1, the use of non-contact measurement of the human face to high light the salient points of the face for computer automated face recognition. It is also known from the science of Anthropometty the use of body measurement of the human body for the examination and comparison of populations.
The objective of this invention is to identify an individual by measuring their uniquely body characteristics for comparison to prior known measurements.
According to this present invention there is provided a method and apparatus for identification of any individual by Anthropometry means.
The device could be a free standing structure and could be made from tubular or extruded sections with the scanning section being adjustable to the height of the individual, the adjustment could be by gravitational means or through electro mechanical means. The aperture is where the individual places their head to allow the scanning of the face, this could be by laser line triangulation, laser spot or white light reflection. The scanning device scans the face which produces a set of world co-ordinates which represent the facial feature of the individual scanned, these world co-ordinates could be of Polar or Cartesian or a combination of the two formats and are converted into a 3D computer model, this model could have a file format of.DWG, .D3CF or.STL, the model can be manipulated in 3D space to give a reference datum from which to reference prior known measurements.
When the individual is standing for the scan the height of the scanning device is recorded this could be by linear encoder or a rotary encoder and directly relates to the individuals height, as the individual stands on the device feet imprints are taken this could be via pressure pad mechanical sensors or touch screen resistive technology or optical scanning either light reflective detection or light occluding detecting also a heat map device could be used, together with the mass of the individual taken via the devices weighing system this could be mechanical to digital or analogue to digital, with all measurements being stored by computer means.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with the aid of the accompanying drawing.
Drawing 1:-illustrates items 1 to 8 where 1 is the scanning device, 2 is the base, 3 is the weighing device, 4 is the foot print device, 5 is the device support, 6 is the counter balance weight, 7 is the rope connecting the counter balance to the scanning device and 8 is the pulley to allow the connection.
Drawing 2:-A. depicts the 3D computer model where the inclination of the nasal bridge is 135 degrees from the vertical. B. depicts the model after rotating to the predetermined inclination of 140 degrees, with the datum of Y & Z zero shown.
Drawing 3:-C. illustrates a plan view of the computer model as taken from the world coordinates, where the centre of each eye is at different distances from the zero datum. D. depicts the computer model having rotated the model in the X axis to align the eyes at equal distance from the zero datum.
The individual stands on the foot print device with the shoes removed above the weighing device and adjusts the scanning device to suit their head position placing their head into a the aperture, they then trigger the scanner to capture their facial features. Whilst the scan is taking place the height of the scanning device is digitally recorded which is the reference height of the individual. The weight of the individual is also taken together with their sole imprint shapes.
The scan data is converted from world co-ordinates into a 3D computer model where the incline of the subjects nose is derived this done by taking a mean line from the tip of the nose through to the nasion, this inclination of the nasal bridge is adjusted to example 140 degrees from the vertical. The centre of each eye is derived and the rotation of the model is performed to adjust the distance from each eye's centre to the datum axis of zero making the distance the same, therefore positioning the model where it is looking forward straight ahead.
Having positioned the computer model to a predetermined position in 3D the following measurements are derived. The nasal tip angle, the nasolabial angle, the nasofrontal angle and the nasal tip angle. The following head anthropometry measurements are derived, the interpupillary breadth, the brzygomatic breadth, the menton sellion length, the biocular breadth and the sellion & stomion to the top of the head. These measurements are also used to provide a proportional relationship between the points of reference for use in a great detailed analysis.
Having derived the measurements and angles from this initial scan, this data is digitally stored as the master data set and any subsequence scan data is referenced back to this data set, server stored in a central data bank. If as the age of the individual increases an allowance for a change in the master data set is provided together any change in height, mass & foot shape with a set tolerance of known entropy of the individual.
Sub-sequential identifications' a data set is obtained where each measurement is compared to the master data set in an order of salient measurements ( e.g. height, weight, foot size & facial features) if these measurements match then no further comparison is needed but any failure would require further comparison in greater detail until it was determined that the individual is not the same individual from the initial measurements and for action to be taken.
