Abstract

260,368. Bernon, M. L., and Walker, R. J. Aug. 10, 1925. Folding vehicles; hoods.-In a folding baby carriage of the kind in which the back, the wheels, the arms, and the foot-rest are adapted to be folded into a compact article and to. be enclosed in a handled box-like case, the back and arms folding into the portion above the seat and the wheels and their supports and the foot-rest folding into the frame below the seats, the boxlike case forming the body of the perambulator, the side arms fold inwards and downwards on to the seat, the handle and back fold down on to the side arms, and the foot-rest, which is pivotally susupended, folds into the other part of the body, each pair of wheels first fold together in a scissors-like manner and fold on one another on to the foot-rest, and the encasing means comprises a collapsable and handled box-like member separate from the perambulator and can be used as a hood; in a modification the box-like member forms the body of the perambulator. As shown, the baby carnage comprises a main frame 1, 2, Fig. 4, a foldable handle 3, adapted to be kept extended by means of clips 4, arm rests 7 pivoted to the members 2 of the main frame and kept in operative position by hook-shaped members 8, the handle, when collapsed, and the arm rests being adapted to fold down on to the top of the main frame. On the underside of the main frame are mounted the wheels 15 carried by cross-arms 14 pivotally and slidably mounted on rods 11, the wheels being kept in operative position by means of clips on the rear arms 14 being engaged by pivoted struts 21; a foot-rest 19 carried by links 20 and kept in operative position by clips 17 is also mounted on the underside of the main frame 1, 2, and together with the wheels is adapted to be folded on to the main frame. Fig. 1 shows the encasing means comprising a collapsable case having side flaps 32, 34 which, when opened, permit the folded carriage to be placed in the case. The case, when collapsed, may serve as a hood as shown in Fig. 7, the back 29 and front 30 being collapsed together, the case by means of the slots 33, Fig. 1, being clipped on to the cross-bar 26, Fig. 4. In a modification, the separate case is dispensed with, and the main frame 1, 2 comprises a case divided into upper and lower compartments by a horizontal partition forming the seat, closing lids or flaps being provided for the compartments.
