Abstract

The tapered void former is for threaded steel coupling devices for forming a void within cast concrete to access a threaded reinforcing steel coupling. The taper may allow easy removal of the void former by shape or chemical composition for a smooth surface. The former may include a threaded male portion at its narrower end for matching a female threaded opening of the steel coupling device. The void former may be extracted with a tool which has two prongs inserted into two voids formed in the void former.

Description

List of figures Figure I shows the re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices in its basic form. This shows the threaded section at the base of the taper to allow connection to the reinforcing steel coupling device and the openings for the two pronged extraction tool for the removal of the re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices from the coupling device at the other.
Figure II shows the re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling device in its operational position, which is screwed into a threaded reinforcing steel coupling device, prior to concrete being poured.
Figure III shows the re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling device connected to the reinforcing steel coupling device cast in concrete.
Figure IV shows the re-useable reinforcing steel coupling device in situ within concrete after the removal of the tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling device.
Figure V shows the reinforcing steel coupling device in situ within concrete after the removal of the re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling device and the insertion of a threaded reinforcing steel bar to connect to the next part of the fabrication.
Figure VI shows the two-pronged extraction tool for the removal of the re-useable tampered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices both prior to insertion and in its operational position.

  1. Description of the operational processThe process begins during the pre-fabrication process of a piling/diaphragm wall cage. The pieces of reinforcing steel that will form part of the interconnecting section are prepared as specified in the customers' design. Once prepared, a threaded reinforcing steel coupling device will be attached to the piece in accordance with the appropriate manufacturers' installation instructions. The processed piece of reinforcing steel is then built into the piling/diaphragm wall cage as per the manufacturing design drawings. Upon completion of the manufacturing process, the piling/diaphragm cage undergoes a final inspection, and as part of that process, the re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices is screwed in to the reinforcing steel coupling device as shown in Figure II.The piling/diaphragm wall cage is then transported to site and installed in position by the customer. Once the piling/diaphragm wall cage has been installed in position, the amount and grade of concrete as specified within in the structural specification and design for the project. The concrete is poured to a level as specified within the design, which will leave the diametrically larger end of the re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices exposed as shown in Figure III.The poured concrete is then allowed to cure, in line with the manufacturers' instructions. Upon the completion of this process, the two-pronged extraction tool shown in Figure VI, is used to extract the re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices to leave a void within the cured concrete as shown in Figure IV. To complete the process, a threaded length of reinforcing steel, as specified within the design is then screwed into the threaded reinforcing steel coupling device as illustrated in Figure V. Claims 1. A re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices for the forming of voids within cast concrete for the access to threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices.
  2. 2. A re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices according to Claim 1, characterized by the taper of the design to facilitate the removal from concrete upon the completion of its curing.
  3. 3. A re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices according to Claim 2, characterized by being threaded with a male thread at the smaller diametric end of the taper to match the female tapered opening of the reinforcing steel coupling device.
  4. 4. A re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices according to Claim 3, characterized by creation of voids within its body for the insertion of the two-pronged extraction tool.
  5. 5. A re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices according to Claim 4, characterized by its being manufactured from a copolymer material to prevent moisture ingress from the concrete causing binding of the two threads and potential damage to the female thread of the reinforcing steel coupling device.
  6. 6. A re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices according to Claims, characterized by its being manufactured from copolymer material which due to its smooth outer surface and chemical composition, prevents adherence of concrete to its body.
  7. 7. A re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices according to Claim 6, characterized by manufacturing to match the standardized range of diametric thread sizes to match the reinforcing steel coupling devices, which are in turn manufactured to diametrically match the standard reinforcing steel sizes manufactured for the UK market.
  8. 8. A re-useable tapered void former for threaded reinforcing steel coupling devices according to Claim 7, characterized by its manufacture in varying lengths to meet the concrete depth requirements of the customers project specification.
