Abstract

260,210. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Weldon, J. J.). Oct. 23, 1925, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Compound paper; paper, treating with special materials.- Laminated material, particularly for electric insulation, is made by first impregnating sheets of absorbent fibrous material such as paper with a substance of high insulating properties such as wood pitch, asphaltum, copal, or a suitable gum, and then uniting the sheets with a binder such as shellac or a synthetic resin. The material to be impregnated, for example kraft paper, is unwound from a roll 1, passes over a heated plate 2, and is wound on a second roll 3. Powdered or molten impregnating material is supplied from a hopper 4, which may be provided with feed mechanism 6. Pressure rollers 7, 8, 9 bear against the roll 3, the rollers 7, 8 being preferably heated. The impregnating material forms a pool 10 where the roller 7 presses against the roll 3. Means such as air jets may be used to confine the pool within the limits of the paper. The roll of impregnated paper may be rolled to form tubes in the same machine, or bv the combined coating and rolling machine described in Specification 190,838, [Class 140, Waterproof &c. fabrics], a binder of shellac. synthetic resin, or the like being interposed between the layers.
