Elastic fabrics; compound fabrics. - A compound elastic fabric comprises an ordinary elastic fabric 1, Fig. 1, such as woven or knitted fabric having rubber threads, or fabric combined with sheet rubber, to which is sewn a non-elastic faric 2, previously pleated or quilled and sewn in that condition to the elastic fabric while the latter is not under tension. Preferably the stitches 3 are individually arranged at an angle to the pleats of the non-elastic fabric. The pleated strip 2 may consist of ribbons joined at the edges by the stitches securing them to the elastic fabric; and the latter may consist of a number of elastic ribbons 7, Fig. 3. Ornamental farbic such as tulle, lace, &c. may be combined with satin or silk ribbon to form the pleated face, e.g. a strip of tulle 10, Fig. 5, may 'be edged with ribbon 8, 9 pleated and secured to two elastic strips 11, 12. A woven or knitted extensible fabric may be used for the facing fabric, in which case the pleating of the whole or of a part thereof may be parallel to the direction of extension of the elastic fabric, or at an angle thereto, as shown in Fig. 8. The fabric is applicable to the manufacture of belts, corsets, garters, &c., or as a trimming. The pleated material may be stitched to the elastic fabric by means of a sewing machine having feed mechanism which protects the undulations of the material against deformation, such as the machine described in Specification 194,696, [Class 112, Sewing &c.].
