Abstract

259,799. Crawford, J. H., Helmholtz, A. W., and Farrell, D. Dec. 15, 1925. Blasting cartridges and fuzes.-A blasting cartridge contains a charge of liquefied gas, such as carbon dioxide, and an electrical conductor, bursting of the cartridge being effected by passing through the conductor a current of sufficient strength to volatilize it, thereby gasifying the liquid charge and causing a sudden increase in pressure. The cartridge shown comprises a casing 11 having at one end a closure consisting of a disc 15 held between two rings 12, 16 and packing 14. A weakening groove 18 is made in the disc to enable it to be ruptured when the charge is gasified. At the other end of the casing is a ring 21 through which passes an insulated plug 23. This is bored at 25, 26 and carries within a protective casing 30 a needle valve 27, through which the fluid charge is admitted to the cartridge. Between the members 23, 15 is mounted a tube 20 of lead, copper, &c., extending longitudinally through the casing, this tube being vaporized, to burst the cartridge, when a current is passed through it. Electric leads 32, 33 are arranged as shown. In a. modification, the vaporizable conductor is embedded in black powder or the like contained in an insulating tube arranged similarly to the tube 20.
