In use the person stands on the platform, with the flexible material connected between the platform and the user’s leg, and pivots part of their leg below their knee backwards and forwards against resistance from the flexible stretchable material and thereby exercises the hamstring of the leg.

Description

APPARATUS FOR EXERCISING A PERSON'S HAMSTRINGS This invention relates to exercise apparatus and, more especially, this invention relates to apparatus for exercising a person's hamstrings.
There are many different types of known apparatus for exercising a person's hamstrings. The known apparatus may be in the nature of a floor-mounted machine, or it may be it the nature of a resistance band attached to a wall or a door at one end and attached to the person's lower leg at the other end. The known floor mounted apparatus is bulky and not suitable for use in a restricted space, for example in a person's home. The known resistance band apparatus is such that a resistance band is attached to the person's lower leg just above their ankle. In use with the resistance band attached to the wall or door, the resistance band tends to slip up and down the person's lower leg. The resistance band may then become uncomfortable and it may also squeeze the achillies tendon.
It is an aim of the present invention to avoid or reduce the above mentioned problems.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided apparatus for exercising a person's hamstrings, which apparatus comprises: (i) a platform on which the person stands in use of the apparatus; (ii) a length of flexible stretchable material; (iii) first anchor means which is on the platform and which is for anchoring a first end of the length of flexible stretchable material; (iv) second anchor means which is for anchoring to a part of a leg of the person below their knee and which is for anchoring a second end of the length of flexible material, and wherein: (v) in use, the person stands on the platform with the first end of the length of flexible stretchable material attached to the first anchor means on the platform and with the second end of the length of flexible stretchable material attached to the part of their leg below their knee, and the person then pivots the part of their leg below their knee backwards and forwards against resistance from the length of flexible stretchable material and thereby exercises the hamstring of the leg.
The apparatus of the present invention is advantageous in that it does not occupy the space typically occupied by known floor mounted machines, it is comfortable to use, and it is able to be produced to be light and compact. The apparatus is easily stored after use. The apparatus thus enables a person to exercise their hamstrings in confined spaces, for example in homes, and then to store away the apparatus after use. The apparatus is also easily able to be sold by mail order.
The exercising of person's hamstrings by the pivoting of the part of their leg below their knee backwards and upwards is known as hamstring curls. The apparatus of the present invention may also be used for other leg exercises, for example with the person keeping their leg straight and moving their entire leg backwards and upwards in order to promote hip flexibility.
Preferably, the apparatus is one in which the second anchor means is configured for anchoring to a foot of the person. The second anchor means may be anchored to another part of the lower leg of the person below their knee if required.
When the second anchor means is for anchoring to a foot of the person, then the apparatus is preferably one in which the second anchor means comprises a heel attachment for receiving only the heel of the foot, and a strap connecting portion for connecting to the second end of the length of flexible stretchable material. Other configurations for the second anchor means may be employed so that, for example, the second anchor means may be in the form of a slip-on shoe.
The apparatus may be one which the first anchor means comprises a first bar and a second bar, and in which the first bar is for receiving the first end of the length of flexible material when the second anchor means is being worn on one leg of the person such that the person is able to exercise the hamstring of the said one leg, and in which the second bar is for receiving the first end of the length of flexible stretchable material when the second anchor means is being worn on the other leg of the person and such that the person is able to exercise the hamstring in the said other leg. Other types of first anchor means may be employed so that, for example, the first anchor means may comprise a single member with first and second anchor points.
The apparatus may be one in which the first bar and the second bar extend away from each other and one from each of two longitudinal side edges of the platform Alternatively, the apparatus may be one in which the first bar and the second bar extend towards each other and one each from two positions on an upper face of the platform. Other positions for the first bar and the second bar may be employed.
The apparatus may be one in which the platform is of a width for receiving one foot only of the person, whereby the person exercises the hamstring in their other leg by pivoting the part of their other leg below their knee backwards and upwards alongside an edge of the platform.
Alternatively, the apparatus may be one in which the platform is of a width for receiving both feet of the person, in which the platform comprises an auxiliary platform for being placed on the platform, and in which the auxiliary platform is of a width for receiving one foot only of the person; whereby the person exercises the hamstring in their other leg by pivoting the part of their other leg below their knee backwards and forwards alongside an edge of the auxiliary platform.
The platform, whether used on its own or in association with the auxiliary platform, is such as to raise the foot of the leg of the person which is being stood on above the other foot of the person, in order to enable easy and convenient pivoting backwards and upwards of the other leg of the person in order to facilitate the hamstring curls.
The apparatus may be one in which the second end of the length of flexible stretchable material includes a ring for use in attaching the second end of the length of flexible stretchable material to the second anchor member. The ring may be a D-ring. Rings of other shapes may be employed.
Preferably, the length of flexible stretchable material is a length of flat material. However, if desired, the length of flexible stretchable material may be solid material in a tube format, or it may be a length of stretchable material in the form of a hollow tube. The length of flexible stretchable material may be made of rubber or a plastics material. Alternatively, the length of flexible stretchable material may be a coil spring. Alternatively, the length of flexible stretchable material may be a combination of a length of rubber or a plastics material on the one hand, and a length of a coil spring on the other hand.
Preferably, the apparatus is one in which the platform, the length of flexible stretchable material and the second anchor means are releasably connected together in use of the apparatus, whereby the platform, the length of flexible stretchable material and the second anchor means are separable from each other in a non-use condition of the apparatus. This separation of the various components of the apparatus facilitates sale of the apparatus by mail order and/or storage of the apparatus in homes or other locations, for example gymnasiums, when the apparatus is not in use. If desired, only two components of the apparatus of the present invention may be separable from each other.
Alternatively, all the components of the apparatus of the present invention may be permanently connected together.
The apparatus may be one in which there is only one said length of flexible stretchable material. Alternatively, the apparatus May be One in which there is more than one said length of flexible stretchable material, and in which the different lengths of flexible stretchable material are of a different and increasing extendable strengths, whereby the person is able to use the different strengths of flexible stretchable material for progressively increasing the difficulty by which the person exercises their hamstrings.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view from one side and the rear of first apparatus for exercising a person's hamstrings, with the apparatus being in use by a person exercising the hamstring in their left leg; Figure 2 is a view like Figure 1 and shows the person's leg having been pivoted backwards and upwards to a higher level than in Figure 1: Figure 3 is a view from the front and above of the apparatus in use and as shown in Figure 1; Figure 4 is a view from above and one side of the apparatus shown in Figure 1 but being used by the person to exercise the hamstring in their right leg; Figure 5 is a side view of the apparatus in use and as shown in Figure 4; Figure 6 is an enlarged view of part of the apparatus as shown in Figure 5; Figure 7 is a perspective view of part of the apparatus shown in Figure Figure 8 shows how the part of the apparatus shown in Figure 7 is able to be fitted to a left foot of a person; Figure 9 shows the part of the apparatus shown in Figures 7 and 8 completely fitted to the foot of the person; Figure 10 is a view from the front and above of component parts of second apparatus of the present invention; Figure 11 is a view from above and one side of part of the apparatus shown in Figure 10; Figure 12 is an enlarged view of the illustrated top right hand part of the component part of the apparatus of the present invention as shown in Figure 10; Figure 13 shows an alternative length of flexible material to the length of flexible material shown in Figure 1; Figure 14 is a view from the front and above of third apparatus of the present invention, with the apparatus being in use by a person exercising the hamstring in their left leg: Figure 15 is a view from above and one side of the apparatus as shown in Figure 14 but with the person exercising the hamstring in their right leg; Figure 16 is a rear view of the apparatus in use and in the position shown in Figure 15; and Figure 17 is a rear view like Figure 16 but shows the person commencing to perform a hamstring curl with their right leg.
Referring to Figures 1 -9, there is shown first apparatus 2 for exercising a person's hamstrings 4. The apparatus 2 comprises a platform 6 on which the person 8 stands in use of the apparatus 2. The apparatus 2 &so comprises a length of flexible stretchable material 10. The apparatus 2 further comprises first anchor means 12 which is on the platform 6 and which is for anchoring a first end 14 of the length of flexible stretchable material 10. The apparatus 2 further comprises second anchor means 16 which is for anchoring to a part 18 of a leg 20 below their knee 22 and which is for anchoring a second end 24 of the length of flexible stretchable material 10.
In use of the apparatus 2, the person 8 stands on the platform 6 with the first end 14 of the length of flexible stretchable material 10 attached to the first anchor means 12, and with the second end 24 of the length of flexible stretchable material 10 attached to the part 18 of their leg 20 below their knee 22. The person 8 then pivots the part 17 of their leg 20 below their knee 22 backwards and upwards as shown in Figures 1 and 2 against resistance from the length of flexible stretchable material 10, and thereby exercises the hamstring 4 in the leg 20. The apparatus 2 thus enables the person 8 easily and conveniently to perform hamstring curls to increase the strength and/or flexibility of their hamstrings 4.
The second anchor means 16 is configured for anchoring to a foot 26 of the person 8. More specifically, the second anchor means 16 comprises a heel attachment 28 for receiving only the heel 30 of the foot 26. The second anchor means 16 also comprises a strap connecting portion 32 for connecting to the second end 24 of the length of flexible stretchable material 10.
The first anchor means 12 comprises a first bar 34 and a second bar 36. The first bar 34 is for receiving the first end 14 of the length of flexible stretchable material 10 when the second anchor means 16 is being worn on the leg 20 of the person 8 as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The person 8 is able to exercise the hamstring in the leg 20. The second bar 36 is for receiving the first end 14 of the length of flexible stretchable material when the second anchor means 16 is being worn on the other leg 38. The person 8 is then able to exercise the hamstring 4 of their other leg 38. The first bar 34 and the second bar 36 extend away from each other and one each from each of two longitudinal side edges 40, 42 of the platform 6.
The platform 6 is of a width for receiving one foot 26 only of the person 8. The person 8 thus exercises their hamstring 4 in their other leg 38 by pivoting the part of their other leg 38 below their knee 22 backwards and upwards alongside the edge 40 of the platform 6 as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The length of flexible stretchable material 10 is a length of flat material.
The apparatus 2 is such that the platform 6, the length of flexible stretchable material 10 and the second anchor means 16 are releasably connected together in use of the apparatus 2. Thus the platform 6, the length of flexible stretchable material 10 and the second anchor means 16 are separable from each other in a non-use condition of the apparatus 2. This enables the various component parts of the apparatus 2 to be separated from each other and this is advantageous for packaging of the apparatus 2, for example for mail order sales or occupying minimum space in shops. It is also advantageous for enabling the apparatus to be stored away after use, especially where the apparatus 2 is being used in homes with restricted space.
As shown in Figure 7, the second anchor means 16 is such that the strap connecting portion 32 comprises two strips 44, 46 of interlocking mesh plastics members of the type that push together for attachment and which pull apart for separation. The strips 44, 46 are preferable made from Velcro (Registered Trade Mark). The strips 44. 46 enable the strap connecting portion 32 to be tightened as required around the ankles of the person 8. The strap connection portion 32 has a ring 48 which connects to a D-ring 50. The 0-ring 50 has a gap 52 enabling the D-ring 50 to be connected to the circular ring 48. The gap 58 also enables the 0-ring 50 to be inserted through the second end 24 of the flexible stretchable material 10. The second end 24 of the flexible stretchable material 10 is a folded back end which is thus able to be passed through the gap 52 in the 0-ring 50. The length of flexible stretchable material 10 is a flat strip which returns back on itself as best appreciated from Figures 6 and 7. The strap connecting portion 32 is able to pass through a buckle member 54 connected by a short strap 56 to a side 58 of the heel attachment 28. The strap 32 is connected at an end 60 to the other side 62 of the heel attachment 28. The heel attachment 28 is easily connected to the person's heel 30 as can best be appreciated from Figures 8 and 9. The strap connecting portion 32 is able to be fed through the aperture in the buckle member 54. The strap connecting portion 32 is then tightened over the instep portion of the person's foot 26 and then secured in this position by the two strips 44, 46 being pressed together.
Referring now to Figures 10-12, there is shown second apparatus 64 of the present invention. Similar parts as in the apparatus 2 have been given the same reference numerals for ease of comparison and understanding.
The apparatus 64 is such that the platform 6 is provided with first anchor means 66 which is different from the first anchor means 12. The first anchor means 66 comprises a U-shaped first bar 68 and a U-shaped second bar 70. As best appreciated from Figure 10, the first U-shaped bar 68 and the second U-shaped bar 70 extend towards each other, and they extend one each from two positions on an upper face 72 of the platform 6. The first and second U-shaped bars 68, 70 may be mounted on the mounting member 74 attached to the platform 6 by screws 76. Each of the U-shaped first and second bars 68, 70 comprises a pair of spaced apart ring members 78, 80 which define between them a guide gap 82 for receiving the first end 14 of the flexible stretchable material 10.
Figure 13 shows flexible stretchable material 84 which may be used as an alternative to the flexible stretchable material 10 and which may be used in third apparatus of the present invention. The length of flexible stretchable material 84 has at each end a carabiner clip 86 with a spring biased finger portion 88. The flexible stretchable material 84 may be of strip/strap form as in the case of the flexible stretchable material 10. The flexible stretchable material 10, 84 may alternatively be of other cross sectional shapes and/or of hollow or solid construction.
Figures 14-17 show third apparatus 90 of the present invention. Similar parts as in previous Figures have been given the same reference numerals for ease of comparison and understanding. The apparatus 90 is such that the platform 6 is of a width for receiving both feet 26, 92 of the person 8. The apparatus 90 comprises an auxiliary platform 94 which in use of the apparatus 90 as shown in Figure 14 receives just the foot 94. Thus the auxiliary platform 94 raises the foot 92 of the person 8 above the level of the foot 26, and the person 8 is able to perform the hamstring curls as described above.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, other constructions may be employed for the platform 6, the flexible stretchable material 10, the first anchor means 12 and the second anchor means 16. The second anchor means 16 may be such that it comprises a configuration for attaching around the ankle of the person 8, or around some other part of their leg below their knee 22. The apparatus 2 as shown in the drawings is such that there is only one length of the flexible stretchable material 10. However, alternatively, the apparatus may be sold with two or more sets of flexible stretchable material 10 with each length of flexible stretchable material 10 in the set being of increasing extendable strengths whereby the person is able to use the different strengths of the flexible stretchable material for progressively increasing the difficulty by which they exercise their hamstrings. Individual components shown in the drawings are not limited to use in their drawings and they may be used in other drawings and in all aspects of the invention. The invention also extends to the individual components mentioned and/or shown above, taken singly or in any combination.
