Description

The Combination of a Seat Tube and Seat Post for a Cycle The invention relates to the combination of a seat tube and seat post for a cycle.
It is desirable to be able to retain a seat post of a bicycle or tricycle within the frame of the bicycle or tricycle to prevent theft. The seat post height should still be able to be adjusted but removal is prevented. This is particularly important for public hire schemes or fleet bike use.
A known arrangement for retaining the seat post is shown in Fig 1. In this arrangement, a rigid rod 1 has a cylindrical block 2 mounted to one end. There is a threaded bore 20 in the cylindrical block 2 and an aperture (not shown) in the seat tube 4 so that a security type bolt 3 can be passed through the aperture and into the threaded bore 20 to secure the block 2 to the seat tube 4 of the bicycle frame. At the other end of the rod 1 is a disc 5 which is secured to the rod 1 with a bolt 6 which passes perpendicularly through the disc 5 by passing through a central aperture 24 in the disc 5 and into an axial screw threaded bore 26 in the end of the rod 1. The rod assembly is able to slide within the seat post 7 as the seat post 7 is raised and lowered. At the bottom of the seat post 7 is a screw threaded axial bore 28 and an end cap 8 with a screw thread 30 that is screwed into the screw threaded axial bore 28 in the bottom of the seat post 7. The end cap 8 has a central aperture 32 which slidingly receives the rod 1 and through which the disc 5 cannot pass thereby preventing the seat post 7 from being removed from the seat tube 4. In this way, the seat post 7 can be raised and lowered over a reasonable distance, but it cannot be removed from the seat tube 4. At least, it cannot be removed without specialist tools to undo the security bolt 3.
The cylindrical block 2 occupies space within the seat tube 4 of the frame, and this space could otherwise be used for other purposes.
According to the invention, there is provided the combination of a seat tube and seat post for a cycle, the combination including: a first stop at the lower end of the seat post, the first stop protruding at the lower end of the seat post in a direction radially outwardly with respect to the longitudinal axis of the seat post, and, -a second stop fast with the seat tube, and located between the seat tube and the seat post, the stops being such that they interengage to prevent removal of the seat post from the seat tube.
As the first stop is at the lower end of the seat post, the whole region below the lower end of the seat post is available space for other items, such as an electric motor. The combination of the invention is very compact. It is seen that the rod assembly of the prior arrangement has been completely eliminated.
The first stop may comprise a single protrusion or may comprise a plurality of protrusions. The first stop may protrude on opposite sides of the seat post. In a preferred embodiment, the first stop comprises a flange which may be substantially continuous around the seat post axis. The first stop may be carried by a member, which may be mounted on the seat post by being received in the end of the seat post. The member may be screw threaded so as to be screwed into a screw thread in the lower end of the seat post.
The second stop may take any suitable form, and may present a stop surface which extends around at least half of the circumference of the seat tube. The word "circumference" is intended to cover both seat tubes of circular cross-section and also seat tubes of non-circular cross section, such as aerodynamic seat tubes of tear drop cross section. Preferably the second stop presents a stop surface which extends around at least two thirds, and preferably at least three quarters of the circumference of the seat tube, most preferably extending around substantially the full circumference of the seat tube.
The second stop may form the lower edge of a sleeve. The sleeve may include a split from its upper edge. This is particularly the case where the sleeve overlaps portion of the seat tube which also includes a split.
The second stop may be made fast with the seat tube by one or more bolts, which may pass through the seat tube. The or each bolt may also pass through the seat clamp. The or each bolt may therefore perform a dual function of attaching both the seat clamp and the second stop. The or each bolt may be a security bolt.
The second stop may include a lip that sits against the upper end of the seat tube.
The second stop may be made from any suitable material and may be made from a low friction material or a self lubricating material such as a plastics material such as nylon.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig la is a side elevation of a known seat post and seat tube arrangement; Fig lb is a side elevation of the arrangement of Figla in cross-section; Fig 2a is a side elevation of the seat post and seat tube arrangement of the embodiment of the invention, and; Fig 2b is a side elevation of the arrangement of Fig 2a in cross-section.
The embodiment of the invention as shown in Figs 2a and 2b comprises a seat tube 12 and seat post 10.
In the bottom end of the seat post 10 is an end cap 9. The bottom end of the seat post 10 defines a screw thread 40 and the end cap 9 defines an outer thread 42 on its main body 44. The lower part of the end cap 9 defines a radially outwardly extending flange 46 of a greater diameter than the diameter of the seat post 10. The upwardly facing surface 48 of this flange 46 forms the aforesaid "first stop".
A sleeve 11 with an axially extending slot (not shown) from its upper edge 52 is inserted into the seat tube 12 of the cycle frame. The sleeve 11 has a lip 54 extending radially outwardly from its upper edge 52 that sits against the upper end 56 of the seat tube 12. A seat clamp 13 fits around the top section 58 of the seat tube 12. This clamp 13 also features a lip 60 which sits on the top of the sleeve 11. The clamp 13 is secured to the seat tube 12 using two security type bolts 14. These bolts 14 pass though corresponding holes 62, 64 in the seat tube 12 and sleeve 11 but do not contact the seat post 10. The holes 64 in the sleeve 11 have a screw thread to receive the bolts 14.
The bottom edge 66 of the sleeve 11 forms the aforesaid "second stop".
The seat post 10 is able to move up and down within the sleeve 11 within the seat tube 12. However, if removal of the seat post 10 is attempted, the upwardly facing surface 48 of the flange 46 of the end cap 9 will hit the bottom 66 of the sleeve 11, preventing further movement of the seat post 10 and hence preventing its removal.
The embodiment of the invention uses fewer parts than the previously described arrangement and is lighter and quicker to assemble. It also requires less space within the seat tube.
In one embodiment, an [-bike motor can be installed in place of a conventional bottom bracket, which would not be possible in the known arrangement described above as there is not enough space.
The sleeve 11 is a replaceable part and prevents wear to the inside surface of the seat tube 12. The sleeve 11 could be made of a self lubricating material such as nylon to enable smooth operation of the seat post 10.
