Abstract

Actinometers.-An instrument for measuring ionization strengths comprises a two-electrode vacuum tube containing neon or other rarified gas in series with a high resistance and with a condenser in parallel either with the vacuum tube or with the resistance. On connection to a constant voltage supply, the condenser is periodically charged and discharged between definite potentials, a flash occurring in the vacuum tube at the commencement of each cycle. The period of the flashing affords data for the determination of the value of the resistance or the capacity. In the construction shown, the neon tube T is connected in series with a source a and, by means of a two-way switch s, with either a known resistance A or a resistance E to be measured. By means of a two-way switch P, a condenser B of known capacity or a condenser D the capacity of which is to be measured is connected in parallel with the resistance. A or E. The value of the resistance E is obtained by comparing the rate of flashing with the switch S on the contacts b, d respectively. For measuring ionization strengths of R÷ntgen rays or other emanations, a discharge chamber having two electrodes and filled with rarefied helium is substituted for the unknown resistance E, the frequency of flashing being measured with rays of known ionizing strength and with the rays under examination. To prevent changes in the period of flash due to change in ionization, the tube T is preferably enclosed in a box with a small observation aperture, in which box is also included a lamp or vacuum tube 0 to provide a constant ionizing effect, which reduces the starting voltage of the tube T and thus minimizes the effect of minor fluctuations in the supply voltage.
