Description

Composition for use as a surface coating and method of use and/or manufacture thereof The present invention relates to a composition for use as a surface coating and to a method of use and/or manufacture thereof Although the following description refers almost exclusively to a surface coating composition in the form of an exterior wall coating composition, it will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that the composition of the present invention can be used for any purpose and/or applied as a surface coating to any suitable surface, such as to a surface of a construction board or panel, plasterboard, masonry, brick, stone and/or the like, to an interior and/or to an exterior surface, or to any structure, such as a building surface, floor surface and/or the like where a coating is required.
It is known to apply a wall coating in the form of render to an exterior surface of masonry to provide weatherproofing of the masonry and/or to provide a desired aesthetic effect. The render or stucco is typically a construction material made up of aggregate, a binder and water. It is genendly applied to the wall surface as a wet composition using a trowel, which then hardens to a dense solid finish on the masonry.
There are many different types of wall coatings and renders available Most of these wall coatings are water based and therefore suffer from the problem that they cannot be easily applied in cold weather or over the winter months. For example, many water-based coatings cannot be applied when the surface temperature of the exterior air temperature drops below five degrees Celsius. This is the case with water-based cork aggregate contahthig surface coatings. A further problem associated with some wall coatings is that they cannot be easily applied to a wall surface due to their viscosity (Jr stickiness. For example, in order to provide a. traditional render or stucco finish, the surface coating typically has to be sufficiently fluid to allow smooth application onto a wall surface 115ing a. trowel.
It is therefore an a.im of the present invention to provide a surface coating composition which overcomes the abovementioned problems.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a composition suitable for use as a surface coating with overcomes the abovementioned problems.
It is a further aim of the present invention to provide a method of using a composition suitable for use as a surface coating and/or a surface coating composition which overcomes the abovementioned problems.
It is a yet further aim of the present invention to provide a method of manufacturing a composition suitable for use as a surface coating and/or a surface coating composition winch overcomes the abovementioned problems.
It is a yet further aim of the present invention to provide a construction panel or board which includes a. surface coating composition thereon, and a. method of use thereof.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a composition for use as a surface coating, said composition including cork and/or rubber particles and a carrier agent, and wherein the carrier agent is a solvent based resin The inclusion of the solvent based resin in the cork and/or rubber containing composition of the present invention allows the composition to be used as a surface coating or surface finish which can be applied to a surface in use, wherein the surface temperature and/or the ambient air temperature is below 5 degrees Celsius, preferably below zero degrees Celsius, and further preferably below minus 5 degrees Celsius, thereby allowing the composition to be used outside in the Winter months or in very cold conditions. Although solvent based wall coatings are known, the combination of a solvent based resin carrier agent with cork and/or rubber particles has not been used before to the best of the Applicant's knowledge.
The use of a solvent based resin in the composition has the advantage over conventional water-based resins in that the particle sizes are much smaller in solvent based resins than in water-based resins. Preferably use of the solvent based resin creates a microporous film on the surface being coating in use. The film has a plurality of relatively small pores which arc smaller than the pores of the surface, such as for example a wall or masonry surface, on which the resin is to be applied in use. 'these pores allow water vapour to pass out through the coated surface and through the film but prevent water from passing in the opposite direction through the surface from the exterior of the film.
Preferably the solvent based resin is a Pliolite0 solvent based resin.
Preferably the solvent based resin is Sandtex Pliolite 365®. however a Pliolite solvent based resin provided by Wethertex0, johnstones0, Dulux0, Leyland® and/or the like could be used.
