Abstract
An apparatus for exercising the lower limbs and core muscles; the apparatus characterised by a pair of individual rectangular foot roller frames, each circumscribing and housing a plurality of parallel rollers mounted on axles within a solid base frame. End caps may be provided at the ends of each roller, which fit into the frame. The roller surface may be slightly proud of the upper surface of the frame. The base may be flat and held in place by friction, and by rubber pads affixed to the base. The weight of the lower leg may be supported by the frame. The frame may include a carrying handle and the bases may be clipped together.
Description
Description
Pair of Foot Rollers.
This invention relates to apparatus designed for rehabilitation and exercise of the lower limbs and core muscles in the seated position.
Changes in the working and leisure environment for many has meant that individuals are spending prolonged periods in the seated position, either at a desk at work or at home in front of a screen. As a result of this more sedentary lifestyle, there is an increasing prevalence of low back pain as a result of poor posture, core strength and loss of muscle tone. The shuffling motion of the lower limbs facilitated by this apparatus engages core muscles and improves posture.
The gentle passive stretching of calf muscles associated with this exercise is also likely to have additional benefits in terms of prevention of blood pooling and stasis in the calves which is known to be a contributing factor in the genesis of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) following long haul flights, coach trips and train journeys whilst in the seated position for several hours at a time.
The low amplitude movements at the knee joint and improved core strength and posture would also be of benefit following knee or spinal surgery in terms of rehabilitation.
This invention would allow almost silent low amplitude exercise for both the lower limbs and core musculature whilst in a seated position at work, at home or even whilst travelling with minimal disruption to others in the vicinity.
The invention as described is; Exercise apparatus, characterised by a pair of independent, solid, rectangular foot roller frames, each circumscribing a plurality of parallel smooth rollers uniformly spaced and mounted on axles housed with the frame.
Free (almost silent) rotation of each roller occurs within the solid rectangular frame base and soft polymer or foam end "caps" may also serve to minimise noise from any lateral movement of the rollers within the frame.
Each of the said roller frames allows support for each foot whilst the seated user moves their lower legs and feet in a shuffling forward and backward motion.
The individual foot roller frames can be placed on any flat surface at a spacing and angle relative to each other as chosen by the user based on comfort and convenience.
The flat smooth roller surface sits slightly proud of the frame to allow the sole of the foot to pass over the frame surface unimpeded.
The underside of the rollers are recessed within the frame base to allow free rotation above the supporting surface on which the frame is resting.
The pair of foot roller frames are so constructed as to sit squarely on any flat supporting surface and held in place by a combination of the friction of the frame base with the surface and the weight of the lower leg upon the bank of rollers encompassed within the frame.
The rollers are protected within the solid base rectangular frame on all four sides.
The pair of roller frames can be opposed base to base for the purposes of transportation. The frame base is so designed as to allow full base to base opposition for carriage, as there are recesses to allow inter-digitation of the friction pads protruding from each of the bases.
The roller frame also comprises an integral handle for ease of carriage and can also be clipped together.
The Invention as described above can be visualised in the drawings below, Figure 1 (single unit) and 2 (Paired..., back to back for transport) 3. Paired in cross section to show robber pad inter-digitation 4. An embodiment with side clips.
In this embodiment there are 8 rollers in each frame and an integral handle for ease of carriage.
Claims (12)
- Claims.1 Apparatus for exercising the lower limbs and core muscles, said apparatus characterised by a pair of independent, solid, rectangular foot roller frames each circumscribing and housing a plurality of parallel smooth rollers which together provide a flat rolling surface to allow free forward and backward oscillation and support for each foot when a seated individual shuffles their lower limbs.
- 2. .Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the bases of said roller frames are constructed from one piece of solid rectangular shaped material so as to fully circumcscribe, protect and support the bank of equally spaced parallel rollers mounted on axles housed within the frame and provide rigidity to the apparatus.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said flat smooth roller surface sits proud of the upper surface of the frame sides which clip securely on to the frame base to secure the axles and allow free passage of the sole of each foot over the upper surface of the frame.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said axles are supported within the frame at a height to allow free rotation of the lower roller surface above the frame base and supporting surface.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein each of the rollers may be mounted by means of a pair of soft polymer end "caps" on a plurality of parallel axles housed within the one-piece solid rectangular frame base to support the weight of the lower leg whilst seated and allow almost silent free rotation of the rollers and to minimise noise caused by any lateral movement of the rollers within the frame.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said pair of roller frames are completely independent of each other so they can be placed on any surface to support each foot at an angle and separation to be determined by the user according to the users comfort or convenience.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said roller frames sit squarely on the supporting surface or floor so as to be held in place by friction with said surface and additionally the downward force of the weight of the lower leg on its bank of rollers.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein friction is aided by small rubber pads which protrude from the four corners of the underside of each frame base.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said roller frame bases are so designed that they can be fully opposed back to back as a pair for the purpose of transportation without encumbrance from the rubbed pads by virtue of recesses within each base which accommodates the other frames friction pads in a male-female interdigitation.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said rectangular roller frames each comprise an integral handle for the purpose of transportation and back to back opposition during carriage.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said frames can be clipped together base to base for the purpose of transportation.
- 12. Apparatus according to Claim 1 wherein all components can be constructed from recyclable polymers.
