Passing materials through fluid-applying apparatus. - A washing machine for crimped fa.brics comprises an unenclosed travelling apron 6 of wire gauze or other perforated material in combination with means for feeding the fabric on to the apron in a loose state, means for spraying liquid direct on to the fabric as it lies in an unenclosed state on the apron, and means for delivering the fabric from the apron, the feed and delivery means being so arranged that the crimp is not removed from the fabric. The endless apron 6 passes over drums 3, 4 with adjustable and fixed bearings, respectively; and is provided with supporting rollers 69 between the drums. The feed rollers 11 are geared together, and driven by a belt 12 at an equal or higher speed than the apron. Clear washing liquid is supplied to spray pipes 10 at the delivery end of the apron, draining into a tank 26, from whence it is pumped to the next set of spray pipes, and so on to the feed end in known manner. Between the feed rollers 11 and the apron is a smooth plate 42, preferably of glass, above which are spurt pipes 43. A delivery roll 38 is driven at the same speed as the feed rollers. The drum 4 is driven by variable speed gearing, preferably of the expanding pulley type. Preferably, cone pulleys are provided in the feed roller drive, to allow adjustment.
