Abstract

A vehicle 1 that has a sensor 2 for scanning an arc which extends under other vehicle bodies and uses a computer to analyse and differentiate between static and moving objects relative to the travelling vehicle. The sensor may be mounted at the front of the vehicle between the front wheels and sit just above the road. This may mean that the sensor is mounted on the front bumper or radiator grill. The sensor may be a vidar, camera or infra-red device. The computer may generate an alarm signal when a moving object is detected. The sensor may use radio waves to detect if there is a pedestrian leg or lower limbs behind a parked or moving car.

Description

TITLE: Vehicle with Unseen Moving Object Detector The present invention relates to a vehicle (including an autonomous vehicle) with a moving object detector, especially objects such as animals and humans.
When driving along a roadway, it can be difficult for a driver to see moving objects such as animals and humans hidden behind parked vehicles but about to step out onto a roadway. This is because it is impossible for a driver to see under a parked vehicle when elevated in the driving position of a vehicle. Autonomous vehicles also find it difficult to see moving objects hidden behind parked vehicles as their sensors are also elevated. Also even if the feet of a person hidden behind a parked vehicle are seen, it can be difficult to determine if these are moving in the direction of the roadway or recognisable as potential moving objects.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a vehicle with a moving object detector for travelling on a roadway comprising: a) a vehicle, b) a sensor to sense objects in the vicinity of a vehicle, said sensor scanning an arc which normally extends under other vehicle bodies c) and a computer to analyse objects sensed by the sensor, and differentiate between objects which are moving and those which are static relative to the travelling vehicle.
Preferably the sensor includes a vidar, camera, or infra-red device or combinations thereof.
Preferably the sensor s located adjacent and below the front of the vehicle between opposing front wheels.
Preferably the computer generates an alarm signal when a moving object is detected.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing an autonomous vehicle on a roadway.
Referring to the drawing there is shown a roadway X with a pavement Y either side. A central line marking Z is provided down the roadway.
A vehicle 1 is driving along the roadway and is approaching a parked van A with a person B about to walk out into the roadway X. Vehicle 1 may be an autonomous vehicle.
Vehicle 1 has a sensor 2 mounted at the front of the vehicle between the front wheels, and lies just above the roadway X. Vehicle sensor 2 senses objects in the vicinity of a vehicle, and the sensor scans an arc which normally extends under other vehicle bodies such as Van A and across the pavement.
A computer on or connected to the vehicle 1 can analyse objects sensed by the sensor, and differentiate between objects which are moving (such as person B) and those which are static (such as Van A) relative to the traveling vehicle.
Preferably the sensor includes a vidar, camera, or infra-red device or combinations thereof.
Preferably the computer generates an alarm signal when a moving object is detected. This alarm signal can warn the vehicle 1 that a potential dangerous driving threat exists such as person B could emerge into the roadway.
The invention is especially useful as it scans between the gap between the bottom of vehicles and the roadway or pavement detecting movement of the feet of persons, or other objects such as animals.
Whilst the invention is useful for autonomous vehicles. It could be used with driven vehicles where the height of the driver is unable to see moving objects under parked vehicles for example.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present nvention. O C\I
