Straightening. - A machine for straightening sewing-machine needles, light bars &c., comprises a succession of hammering stations, feeding means active during a hammering period for advancing non - rotating needles past the hammering stations, and means for axially - inverting the continuously advancing needles between successive hammering stations. Flat shank needles are thus straightened into the plane of the slabbed face. The slabbed needles a are fed, without rotating, by a pair of rotatable feed screws 1, 2 of opposite hand between a shank rest 8 and a number of top presser-bars 9-12. Different portions of the blade are acted on by hammers 4, 5 operated through impact regulators and co-operating with anvils as described in Specification 233,769, the shanks being held against the presser bars 9, 10 by plungers 17, 18 provided with adjustable stops 21 and forced upwardly by adjustable springs 22. The shank rest is formed with a bevel 13 and abrupt declivity 14 so that the needles during their travel to the second hammering station turn through 180‹ with their slabbed faces uppermost on to the portion 8' of the shank rest, the presser bar 11 having a conformably bevelled part 15. The needles are conveyed by the feed screws, of which the portion of the screw 2 has a deepened groove, to hammers 6, 7 the shanks being held on the shank rest by plungers 19, 20 mounted in the presser bars 11, 12. The plungers are provided with adjustable stops and are pressed down by adjustable springs. The shank rest is adjustable vertically on stationary brackets 27 by micrometer screws 29 to suit the size of needle.
