Description

MULTI-TIER CUP
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to disposable cups for beverages such as coffee, cocoa, tea and juice and snacks and ready-made foodstuffs such as soup, pasta, porridge, pot noodles, ready to serve meals and instant snack products (all referred to below as "beverages and foodstuffs" for ease of understanding).
The word "cup" is used herein to include all drinking and eating 10 vessels including such items as cups, mugs, bowls, pots, tumblers and beakers. The word "liquid" is used to include all hot or cold liquids such as water, milk and the like.
More especially, the invention concerns disposable cups which include at least two separable containers for storing ingredients from which the above-mentioned beverages and foodstuffs can be made simply by adding the contents of one or each container to the cup and then adding water or other liquid to the cup.
Background to the invention
When travelling or away from home, the making of a hot drink such as a coffee can be difficult and presently requires, in addition to a source of hot water, a cup and separate packages or containers of coffee, milk extract and, possibly, sugar.
Similar difficulties arise when seeking to make tea, juice, soup, ready-made foods or like products.
Such difficulties also arise when seeking to make food using separate containers or sachets for instant soup, pasta and like instant foodstuff, and possibly flavouring and seasoning 30 packets.
These items are sometimes bulky and not conducive to a pleasant travel experience.
Furthermore, many people are seeking easy and convenient food and/or drinks for occasions when time is short.
This invention sets out to provide a solution to these and similar problems.
Summary of the Invention
In one aspect the invention provides a cup having an open top, side wall and base, a first container detachably secured to the underside of the cup whose side wall defines an extension to the side wall of the cup and whose side wall and base define a space for receiving, in use, an ingredient suitable for adding to the cup, and a second container detachably secured to the underside of the first container whose side wall defines an extension to the side wall of the first container and whose side wall and base define a space for receiving, in use, a second ingredient suitable for adding to the cup.
The first container may be attached to the cup by one or more 20 pieces or strips of adhesive material, preferably in the form of adhesive labels. Similarly, the second container may be attached to the first container by one or more strips of adhesive material.
Alternatively, the side wall of each container may be provided 25 with an annular array of perforations which enable the first container to be readily separated from the cup and the second container to be readily separated from the first container.
In a further alternative embodiment, the lower external surface of the cup and the upper internal surface of the first container 30 are formed with complementary features which enable the first container to be selectively attached to and removed from the cup without causing damage to the cup. Thus, the lower external surface of the cup and the upper internal surface of the first container may be formed with complementary screw threads to enable one to be connected to or disconnected from the other.
Similarly, the lower external surface of the first container and the upper internal surface of the second container may be formed with complementary features which enable the second container to be selectively attached to and removed from the first container without causing damage to the first container.
The cup and each container may be of any desired shape and size and may be produced from a renewable degradable material such as cardboard, paper or plastics Each container may include a quantity of tea leaves, coffee 15 grains, dried milk, sugar, dried juice, dried soup granules, dried foodstuffs or the like.
An annular projection may be formed in the outer surface of the cup against which the upper rim of a second cup abuts when assembled on said first mentioned cup.
In another aspect, the invention provides an empty cup having an open top, side wall and base to the underside of which is detachably secured first and second tiered containers each of which includes a side wall and base which together define a space for receiving, in use, an ingredient suitable for adding to the cup and then adding water or other liquid to the cup, and means for enabling each said container to be detached from said cup or adjoining container without adversely affecting the integrity of said cup or adjoining container.
Brief Description of the Drawings
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which:-Figure 1 is a side view of an empty cup and sealed containers 5 in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the cup illustrated in Figure 1 with the sealed tiered containers removed; Figure 3 is a side view of an alternative cup and tiered containers to that illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 with the 10 containers secured to the cup; Figure 4 is a side view of the cup and tiered containers shown in Figure 3 with the containers removed from the cup; and Figure 5 is a side view of the cup and container illustrated in Figures 3 and 4 with the tiered containers removed from the cup 15 and ingredients present in the uppermost container being added to the cup.
Detailed Description of the Invention
As mentioned previously, as an easy option for a busy lifestyle and for traveling or away from home, the making of a hot drink such as coffee, or ready-made snacks and meals can be difficult and requires, in addition to a source of hot water or other liquid, separate containers or sachets of the necessary ingredients, a cup and, if appropriate, condiments. These items are often bulky and not conducive to a friendly travel experience.
The multi-tiered cup which is described below provides a solution to this problem.
Referring initially to Figures 1 and 2, the illustrated cup 10 comprises an open-top 12, a side wall 14 and a base 16. Dependant from the base 16 is a first tiered container 18 having a side wall 20 which defines an extension of the side wall 14 of the cup and which terminates in a base 22, and a second container 24 having a side wall 26 which also defines an extension of the side walls 14 and 20 of the cup and the container respectively. The second container 24 terminates in a base 28.
The cup and containers are typically disposable and produced from a renewable/degradable material such as cardboard, paper, plastics or like material.
The tiered containers 18 and 24 define extensions of the cup 10 and, as shown, are connected to the cup and to one another by readily removable adhesive tape or labels 30 or the like. In this way, the combined unit looks as if it is a single cup which is empty.
Other ways of connecting the cup and containers and receptacles may however be employed. Thus, the side walls 20, 26 may include circumferential or annular lines of perforations for ease of separation; alternatively, complementary threads may be provided in overlapping side wall portions of the cup 10 and the container 18, and the container 18 and the second container 24.
The upper surface of each container is preferably sealed with a cover 32 of suitable material which can be peeled away to expose the contents of the container. The presence of such a cover ensures that the container contents are fresh for subsequent use.
The cup and tiered containers illustrated in Figures 3 to 5 are 30 similar to those illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 and like integers to those shown in Figures 1 and 2 have been given the same reference numerals in Figures 3 to 5 for ease of understanding.
In this embodiment, the cup 10 has an upper rim 37 for ease of stacking. Additionally, a removable ring-shaped or other form of holder 36 is provided about the circumference of the cup for ease of use. As shown, the holder 36 is shaped to define opposed wider sections to assist handling of the cup when in use.
In use, each container 20, 22 retains a selected ingredient 34 (or a mix of ingredients) intended to be mixed with or added to the cup. Examples of such ingredients include coffee grains, chocolate powder, tea leaves, a tea bag, sugar, dried milk, 10 dried soup ingredients, pasta, dried juice, dried or instant foodstuff, powdered additives and the like. Hot water or other suitable fluid is then added to the cup.
Advantages of the described cup include that it is relatively compact and portable thereby saving space, easy to use for making drinks and instant food, no additional dip-dip bags or sachets are required. Furthermore, the contents of the containers 20, 22 retain their freshness because they are retained in sealed units, and are travel friendly.
The cup may be of any shape and size and may be produced from a 20 range of suitable materials in a variety of sizes. Dependent on the material employed, the cup and its contents can be heated by placing it in a microwave or other oven.
Packs of cups with containers attached may be stacked and may optionally be stored in a jar or other sealed vessel to prevent exposure to the atmosphere and strong odours. They are also compact, space saving and portable. Alternatively, containers and receptacles may be filled at the point of sale and then attached to a cup as illustrated in the drawings.
It will be appreciated that the foregoing is merely exemplary 30 of cups in accordance with the invention and that modifications can readily be made thereto without departing from the scope of the invention as set out in the appended claims.
