Abstract
A LED light source includes a longitudinally extending first light guide, a housing, and a cartridge. The first light guide has a longitudinally extending light emitting face. The light emitting face has a first end face and a longitudinally spaced apart second end face. The housing has a first side proximate the first end face of the first light guide. The cartridge is mountable to the first side of the housing and has at least one LED on a first face of the cartridge. The first face extends generally transverse to the first light guide when the cartridge has been mounted to the housing. When the cartridge is mounted to the first side of the housing, the first face of the cartridge is adjacent the first end face. A LED light bulb is also disclosed.
Claims (128)
1. A LED light source comprising: (a) a longitudinally extending first light guide having a longitudinally extending light emitting face, the light emitting face having a first end face and a longitudinally spaced apart second end face; (b) a housing having a first recess, the recess having a first side proximate the first end face of the first light guide and a longitudinally spaced apart opposed face, the first recess extending generally transverse to the first light guide from an insertion end to a transversely spaced apart inner end; and, (c) a cartridge slideably receivable in the first recess and having a plurality of LEDs on a first face of the cartridge, the first face extending generally transverse to the first light guide when the cartridge has been inserted into the first recess, the first face having an inner end and an outer end; wherein the cartridge moves from an insertion position in which the inner end of the first face of the cartridge is spaced from the first side of the first recess when the inner end of the first face of the cartridge is positioned at the insertion end to an inserted position in which the first face of the cartridge is adjacent the first side of the first recess when the cartridge is inserted into the first recess.
2. The LED light source of claim 1 further comprising a biasing member biasing the cartridge to the inserted position.
3. The LED light source of claim 1 wherein the first recess includes a cam member whereby, as the cartridge is inserted into the first recess, the cartridge is guided towards the inserted position.
4. The LED light source of claim 3 further comprising a biasing member biasing the cartridge to the inserted position.
5. The LED light source of claim 4 wherein the cartridge is rigid and the biasing member is provided at the inner end of the first recess whereby a biasing force provided by the biasing member when the cartridge is in the inserted position biases the outer end of the cartridge to a position proximate the light guide.
6. The LED light source of claim 1 further comprising a driving member moveably mounted in the housing and driving the cartridge from a position in which the first face of the cartridge is spaced from the first side of the first recess to the inserted position.
7. The LED light source of claim 1 wherein the LEDs are provided only on the first face of the cartridge.
8. The LED light source of claim 1 further comprising a second light guide having an first end face and a longitudinally extending light emitting face, wherein the first recess has a third side proximate the first end face of the second light guide and the LEDs are also provided on a second face of the cartridge, wherein when the cartridge is in the inserted position, the second face of the cartridge is adjacent the third side of the first recess.
9. The LED light source of claim 8 wherein the light guides extend in different directions.
10. The LED light source of claim 9 wherein the light guides extend in different directions that re about 90° apart.
1 1 . The LED light source of claim 1 wherein the cartridge further comprises a heat sink.
12. The LED light source of claim 1 1 wherein the cartridge further comprises the heat sink.
13. The LED light source of claim 12 wherein the cartridge further comprises a substrate, the LEDs are provided on the substrate and the substrate is removable from the heat sink .
14. The LED light source of claim 12 wherein the heat sink is provided in the housing and the cartridge has a side in thermal contact with the heat sink when the cartridge is in the inserted position.
15. The LED light source of claim 1 further comprising a second light guide extending in the same direction as the first light guide, the second light guide having a first end face and a longitudinally extending light emitting face oriented in the same direction as the light emitting face of the first light guide, and the housing further comprises a second recess which slideably receives another cartridge having LEDs on a face thereof.
16. The LED light source of claim 15 wherein the second recess is positioned proximate the first recess and, when inserted the LEDs of the first cartridge face an opposed direction to the LEDs of the second cartridge .
17. The LED light source of claim 15 wherein the second recess is positioned spaced from the first recess and, when inserted the LEDs of the first cartridge face a first direction and the LEDs of the second cartridge face the first direction.
18. The LED light source of claim 1 further comprising a second recess positioned at the second end face of the first light emitting member and, when inserted, the LEDs of the first cartridge face an opposed direction to the LEDs of the second cartridge.
19. A LED light source comprising: (a) a longitudinally extending first light guide having a longitudinally extending light emitting face, the light emitting face having a first end face and a longitudinally spaced apart second end face; (b) a housing having a first side proximate the first end face of the first light guide; and, (c) a cartridge mountable to the first side of the housing and having at least one LED on a first face of the cartridge, the first face extending generally transverse to the first light guide when the cartridge has been mounted to the housing; wherein when the cartridge is mounted to the first side of the housing, the first face of the cartridge is adjacent the first end face.
20. The LED light source of claim 19 wherein the cartridge has mechanical engagement members which are releasably securable to mating mechanical engagement members of the housing.
21 . The LED light source of claim 19 further comprising at least one screw member that releasably secures the cartridge to the first side of the housing.
22. The LED light source of claim 21 wherein the screw members are non- removably secured to the housing.
23. A LED light bulb comprising: (a) an engagement end electrically connectable to a socket; (b) a housing having a light transmitting surface and an interior; and, (c) a cartridge removably receivable in the interior and having a plurality of LEDs.
24. The LED light bulb of claim 23 wherein the LED light bulb has a first recess, the recess having an insertion end proximate an outer surface of the LED light bulb and a longitudinally spaced apart inner end and the cartridge is slideably receivable in the first recess.
25. The LED light bulb of claim 23 wherein the plurality of LEDs are provided on a first face of the cartridge.
26. The LED light bulb of claim 23 wherein the LEDs are provided on a plurality of faces of the cartridge.
27. The LED light bulb of claim 23 wherein the cartridge is generally cylindrical in shape.
28. The LED light bulb of claim 24 wherein the recess is provided in the engagement end.
29. The LED light bulb of claim 24 wherein the recess is provided in the housing.
30. The LED light bulb of claim 23 wherein the housing includes a light guide and the LEDs are positioned against an end of the light guide when installed in the LED light bulb.
31 . The LED light bulb of claim 23 wherein all of an exterior of the housing is made of a material having a light transmitting surface.
32. The LED light bulb of claim 23 wherein the LED light bulb is in the shape of an incandescent or halogen light bulb.
33. A LED light source comprising a longitudinally extending light guide having a longitudinally extending light emitting face having a length, a first end face and a longitudinally spaced apart second end face and a LED light source is provided at least at the first end face, wherein the light emitting face has a plurality of light emitting locations provided thereon, wherein the density of the light emitting locations increases from the first end face towards the second end face.
34. The LED light source of claim 33 wherein a first LED light source is provided at the first end face and a second LED light source is provided at the second end face wherein the density of the light emitting locations increases from each of the first end face and the second end face to a middle of the light emitting face.
35. The LED light source of claim 34 wherein the light emitting locations are positioned to provide a generally even level of illumination along the length of the light emitting surface.
36. The LED light source of claim 34 wherein a level of illumination provided at the middle of the light emitting surface is ± 20% of a level of illumination provided at the first end face .
37. The LED light source of claim 34 wherein a level of illumination provided at the middle of the light emitting surface is ± 10% of a level of illumination provided at the first end face.
38. The LED light source of claim 33 wherein an image is provided in front of at least a portion of the light emitting face and the light emitting locations are positioned such that a person viewing the image views a generally evenly illuminated image.
39. The LED light source of claim 38 wherein the image has at least area that has at least one of a different colour or a different density of the image and the light emitting locations are positioned such that a person viewing the image views a generally evenly illuminated image.
40. The LED light source of claim 33 wherein the LED light source is provided only at the first end face wherein the density of the light emitting locations increases from the first end face to the second end face.
41 . The LED light source of claim 40 wherein the light emitting locations are positioned to provide a generally even level of illumination along the length of the light emitting surface.
42. The LED light source of claim 40 wherein a level of illumination provided at the second end face of the light emitting surface is ± 20% of a level of illumination provided at the first end face.
43. The LED light source of claim 40 wherein a level of illumination provided at the second end face of the light emitting surface is ± 10% of a level of illumination provided at the first end face.
44. The LED light source of claim 33 wherein the light emitting locations comprise discontinuities provided in the light emitting face.
45. The LED light source of claim 33 wherein the light emitting locations comprise a light scattering material applied to the light emitting surface.
46. The LED light source of claim 33 wherein the light emitting locations comprise a fluorescent material .
47. A frame for a work of art comprises at least one side panel extending around a perimeter and defining an inner opening in which the work of art is displayable, the at least one side panel comprising a longitudinally extending light guide having a longitudinally extending light emitting face that faces inwards towards another portion of the at least one side panel, the longitudinally extending light emitting face having a length, a first end face and a longitudinally spaced apart second end face and a LED light source is provided at least at the first end face, wherein the light emitting face has a plurality of light emitting locations provided thereon, wherein the density of the light emitting locations increases from the first end face towards the second end face.
48. The frame of claim 47 wherein the fame is in the shape of a parallelogram and comprises four side panels, each of which comprises a longitudinally extending light guide having a light emitting face that faces onwards
49. The frame of claim 48 wherein each light emitting face has an inner side positioned proximate a plane in which the work of art seats when mounted in the frame and a spaced apart outer side and the inner side is position forward of the plane .
50. The frame of claim 47 wherein the light emitting face has an inner side positioned proximate a plane in which the work of art seats when mounted in the frame and a spaced apart outer side and the inner side is position forward of the plane.
51 . The frame of claim 47 wherein a first LED light source is provided at the first end face and a second LED light source is provided at the second end face wherein the density of the light emitting locations increases from each of the first end face and the second end face to a middle of the light emitting face.
52. The frame of claim 47 wherein the LED light source is provided only at the first end face wherein the density of the light emitting locations increases from the first end face to the second end face
53. A backlight frame for a work of art comprises frame member extending around a perimeter and defining an inner opening in which the work of art is displayable, and a longitudinally extending light guide positioned rearward of the opening and facing towards the opening, the longitudinally extending light guide having a longitudinally extending light emitting face having a length, a first end face and a longitudinally spaced apart second end face and a LED light source is provided at least at the first end face, wherein the light emitting face has a plurality of light emitting locations provided thereon, wherein the density of the light emitting locations increases from the first end face towards the second end face
54. The backlight frame of claim 53 wherein a first LED light source is provided at the first end face and a second LED light source is provided at the second end face wherein the density of the light emitting locations increases from each of the first end face and the second end face to a middle of the light emitting face .
55. The backlight frame of claim 53 wherein the LED light source is provided only at the first end face wherein the density of the light emitting locations increases from the first end face to the second end face.
56. The LED light source of claim 55 wherein the work of art that transmits light is provided in front of at least a portion of the light emitting face and the light emitting locations are positioned such that a person viewing the work of art views a generally evenly illuminated work of art.
57. The LED light source of claim 56 wherein the work of art has at least area that has at least one of a different colour or a different density of the image and the light emitting locations are positioned such that a person viewing the work of art views a generally evenly illuminated work of art.
58. The LED light source of claim 56 wherein the light emitting locations comprise a fluorescent material.
59. A frame for a work of art comprises at least one side panel defining an inner opening in which the work of art is displayable, the inner opening extending in a plane, the at least one side panel comprises a longitudinally extending light guide having a longitudinally extending light emitting face that faces inwards towards the inner opening in a direction generally parallel to the plane, the light emitting face has an inner side positioned proximate the plane and a spaced apart outer side and at least one LED providing a light source for the light guide.
60. The frame of claim 59 wherein the inner side of the light emitting face is spaced from the plane.
61 . The frame of claim 60 wherein the inner side of the light emitting face is spaced from 0.25 to 1 inch from the plane.
62. The frame of claim 59 wherein the light guide has a first end face and a longitudinally spaced apart second end face and the light source is provided at least at the first end face.
63. The frame of claim 62 wherein a first light source is provided at the first end face and a second light source is provided at the second end face .
64. The frame of claim 59 wherein the fame is in the shape of a parallelogram and comprises four side panels, each of which comprises a longitudinally extending light guide having a longitudinally extending light emitting face that faces inwards towards the inner opening in a direction generally parallel to the plane, each light emitting face has an inner side positioned proximate the plane and a spaced apart outer side.
65. The frame of claim 64 wherein the light emitting faces are positioned forward of the plane.
66. The frame of claim 59 wherein the fame comprises a plurality of side panels which meet at corners, at least some of the side panels comprise a longitudinally extending light guide having a longitudinally extending light emitting face that faces inwards towards the inner opening in a direction generally parallel to the plane, each light emitting face has a first end face and a longitudinally spaced apart second end face and the light source is provided at least at the first end face, wherein the light sources are provided in corners of the parallelogram .
67. The frame of claim 66 wherein the fame is in the shape of a parallelogram, each of the side panels comprises a longitudinally extending light guide and the light sources are provided in the corners of the parallelogram.
68. The frame of claim 59 further comprising a sensor that detects a condition in a space in front of a location in which the frame is located and a controller that adjusts at least one of a level of intensity of light emitted by the light source and the colour of light emitted by the light source based upon a signal provided by the sensor .
69. The frame of claim 68 wherein the condition comprises at least one of a level of illumination, a colour of illumination, motion of a body, a noise level, a signal issued by a person.
70. The frame of claim 69 wherein the light source comprises LEDs of at least two different colours.
71 . The frame of claim 59 further comprising a manually actuatable switch operatively connected to the light source wherein operation of the switch adjusts at least one of a level of intensity of light emitted by the light source and the colour of light emitted by the light source based upon a signal provided by the switch.
72. The frame of claim 59 further comprising an energy storage member.
73. The frame of claim 72 wherein the energy storage member comprises a rechargeable battery.
74. The LED light source of claim 59 wherein the at least one LED is operable to selectively emit one or more colours of light.
75. The LED light source of claim 59 wherein the at least one LED is operable to selectively illuminate part of a work of art placed in the fame .
76. A backlight frame for a work of art comprises a frame member that defines an inner opening in which the work of art is displayable, the inner opening extending in a plane, and a longitudinally extending light guide positioned rearward of the opening and facing towards the opening, the longitudinally extending light guide having a longitudinally extending light emitting face spaced rearward of the plane and having a length, a first end face and a longitudinally spaced apart second end face and a LED light source is provided at least at the first end face.
77. The frame of claim 76 wherein the light emitting face is spaced rearward from the plane.
78. The frame of claim 77 wherein the light emitting face is spaced from 0.25 to 1 inch from the plane.
79. The frame of claim 76 wherein the light guide has a first end face and a longitudinally spaced apart second end face and the LED light source is provided at least at the first end face.
80. The frame of claim 79 wherein a first light source is provided at the first end face and a second light source is provided at the second end face.
81 . The frame of claim 76 further comprising a sensor that detects a condition in a space in front of a location in which the frame is located and a controller that adjusts at least one of a level of intensity of light emitted by the light source and the colour of light emitted by the light source based upon a signal provided by the sensor.
82. The frame of claim 81 wherein the condition comprises at least one of a level of illumination, a colour of illumination, motion of a body, a noise level, a signal issued by a person.
83. The frame of claim 82 wherein the light source comprises LEDs of at least two different colours

The frame of claim 76 further comprising a manually actuatable switch operatively connected to the light source wherein operation of the switch adjusts at least one of a level of intensity of light emitted by the light source and the colour of light emitted by the light source based upon a signal provided by the switch .
85. The frame of claim 76 further comprising an energy storage member.
86. The frame of claim 85 wherein the energy storage member comprises a rechargeable battery .
87. The LED light source of claim 72 wherein the at least one LED is operable to selectively emit one or more colours of light.
88. The LED light source of claim 72 wherein the at least one LED is operable to selectively illuminate part of a work of art placed in the fame.
89. A LED light source comprising: (a) a longitudinally extending light guide having a first longitudinally extending light emitting face, the first light emitting face having a first end face, a longitudinally spaced apart second end face, and first and second side faces extending between the first and second end faces; (b) at least one LED provided at the first end face; and, (c) a diffuser comprising a central panel that is spaced from and facing the first light emitting face.
90. The LED light source of claim 89 wherein the central panel of the diffuser is positioned from 0.25 to 3 inches from the light emitting surface.
91 . The LED light source of claim 89 wherein the diffuser is composed of at least one of acrylic, polypropylene and polycarbonate, wherein the diffuser is at least translucent.
92. The LED light source of claim 89 wherein the diffuser extends over the first and second side faces and the light emitting face.
93. The LED light source of claim 89 wherein the diffuser is white.
94. The LED light source of claim 92 wherein the central panel has a first end, a longitudinally spaced apart second end, and first and second sides each of which extends longitudinally between the first and second ends, and the diffuser further comprises a first side panel extending between the first and second ends the central panel and provided on the first side of the central panel and a second side panel extending between the first and second ends the central panel and provided on the second side of the central panel.
95. The LED light source of claim 89 wherein the light guide has a second light emitting face spaced from and opposed to the first light emitting face and facing in a direction opposed to a direction that the first light emitting member faces.
96. The LED light source of claim 89 wherein the light guide has a longitudinally extending rear face spaced from and opposed to the first light emitting face, and the LED light source further comprises a reflector facing the rear face.
97. The LED light source of claim 95 wherein the reflector is spaced from the rear face.
98. The LED light source of claim 95 wherein the reflector abuts the rear face.
99. The LED light source of claim 95 wherein the reflector has a surface facing the rear face, wherein the surface is provided with a white coating.
100. The LED light source of claim 99 wherein the white coating comprises titanium dioxide.

The LED light source of claim 95 further comprising an image provided in front of the light emitting face, the image having at least one portion that has one or more of a different colour or light transmissivity, wherein a surface of the reflector facing the light guide has more than one colour and the colours are positioned to enhance the image when viewed by a user.
102. The LED light source of claim 101 wherein a portion of the reflector has a colour selected to increase the visibility of the portion of the image.
103. The LED light source of claim 95 wherein the reflector has a surface facing the rear face, wherein the surface is provided with a UV paint or fluorescent paint.
104. The LED light source of claim 89 wherein the at least one LED is operable to selectively emit one or more colours of light.
105. A LED light source comprising: (a) a longitudinally extending light guide having a first longitudinally extending light emitting face, a longitudinally extending rear face spaced from and opposed to the first light emitting face, the first light emitting face having a first end face, a longitudinally spaced apart second end face, and first and second side faces extending between the first and second end faces; (b) at least one LED provided at the first end face; and, (c) a reflector facing the rear face.
106. The LED light source of claim 105 wherein the reflector is spaced from the rear face.
107. The LED light source of claim 105 wherein the reflector abuts the rear face.
108. The LED light source of claim 105 wherein the reflector has a surface facing the rear face, wherein the surface is provided with a white coating.
109. The LED light source of claim 108 wherein the white coating comprises titanium dioxide.
1 10. The LED light source of claim 101 wherein the white reflector has a surface facing the rear face, wherein the surface is provided with a UV paint.
1 1 1 . The LED light source of claim 105 further comprising an image provided in front of the light emitting face, the image having at least one portion that has one or more of a different colour or light transmissivity, wherein a surface of the reflector facing the light guide has more than one colour and the colours are positioned to enhance the image when viewed by a user.
1 12. The LED light source of claim 1 1 1 wherein a portion of the reflector has a colour selected to increase the visibility of the portion of the image.
1 13. The LED light source of claim 105 wherein the at least one LED is operable to selectively emit one or more colours of light.
1 14. A LED light source comprising: (a) a longitudinally extending light guide having a first end face and a longitudinally spaced apart second end face and at least one LED provided at the first end face; (b) a power supply comprising a plurality of batteries operatively connected to the at least one LED in a first mode in which the power supply provides a first power to the at least one LED and a second mode in which the power supply provides a second power different to the first power to the at least one LED.
1 15. The LED light source of claim 1 14 wherein, in the first mode, two or more of the batteries are connected in series.
1 16. The LED light source of claim 1 15 wherein, in the second mode, two or more of the batteries are connected in parallel.
1 17. The LED light source of claim 1 14 wherein the plurality of batteries comprise a first battery and a second battery and, in the first mode, the first and second batteries are connected in series.
1 18. The LED light source of claim 1 17 wherein, in the second mode, the first and second the batteries are connected in parallel.
1 19. The LED light source of claim 1 14 further comprising a circuit which includes a sensor and the power supply whereby, when the sensor senses a condition, the sensor issues a signal which causes the power supply to change from the first mode to the second mode.
120. The LED light source of claim 1 19 wherein the sensor comprises a motion sensor.
121 . The LED light source of claim 1 19 wherein the sensor comprises a noise sensor.
122. The LED light source of claim 1 19 wherein the sensor comprises a light intensity sensor.
123. The LED light source of claim 1 14 further comprising a manually operable switch operatively connected to the power supply, the switch having a first position in which the power supply is in the first mode and a second position in which the power supply is in the second mode.
124. A LED light source comprising a circuit including a plurality of LEDs, wherein the LEDs are connected in parallel and each of the plurality of LEDs is individually electrically connected to the circuit by a meltable electrically conductive member.
125. The LED light source of claim 124 wherein the meltable electrically conductive member comprises fuse wire.
126. The LED light source of claim 124 wherein the meltable electrically conductive member melts at a temperature corresponding to a temperature produced by a current drawn by a failed LED through the meltable electrically conductive member.
127. The LED light source of claim 124 wherein the meltable electrically conductive member melts at a temperature above about 80°C.
128. The LED light source of claim 124 wherein the meltable electrically conductive member comprises fuse wire.
