Abstract
A heel clip for a boot having a grip 4 around the boot heel and base, a pair of opposed fingers 2a, 2b extending forward from the web to extend along the base of the heel towards the boot toe end, and a pair of opposed fingers 3a, 3b extending upwards from the web to extend up the leg portion of the boot. The upwardly pointing fingers 3a, 3b are biased towards each other and are resiliently deformable to constrict the leg portion of the boot to grip the ankle of the user. The heel cap prevents the heel slipping from the boot. Also disclosed is a wellington boot comprising the heel clip (figure 5), reducing lifting of the heel from the wellington boot. The clip may be permanently fixed to the boot, and the boot may have a sole such that the clip extends in the plane between the boot base and the sole portion. Also disclosed is a wellington boot having a separately formed sole, the sole including a layer of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) material or expanded thermoplastic urethane.
Description
Wellington Boot with heel retaining clip
The present invention relates to improvements in relation to waterproof boots, often referred to as Wellington boots, and more particularly to such boots which incorporate a heel retaining clip which prevents unintentional movement of the wearers heal in the boot during use.
Waterproof ‘Wellington’ boots are well known in the art. They are a one piece molded boot, typically formed of rubber, which is sized to extend at least partially up the calf of the wearer. The boot provides a robust item of foot wear which is waterproof so as to protect the wearer from the feet and lower legs from getting wet and dirty when travelling over muddy and/or wet terrain. Due to the need for the boot to be waterproof, Wellington boots do not typically include fastening or opening means such as a side zip opening which is often used on boots, in particular knee length or longer boots, to make donning and removal easier. There are some Wellington boots known which include side zips but the zips tend to get damaged by mud and sand and get jammed, making the boot un-usable. Instead, Wellington boots are usually slip-on, with the wear having to insert their foot through the sole top opening in the boot and slid their foot down the length of the boot before manoeuvring it into position in the bottom of the boot. The boot accordingly has to be designed with sufficient clearance down the height of the boot and around the ankle and heel for donning and removal to be possible. This has the drawback, however, that once boot is fitted onto the foot, the clearance around the ankle allows the heel easily to slid back up the boot during use. This can over time cause rubbing of the heal of the wearer, giving rise to blisters etc, and can also lead to the foot being accidentally removed from the boot during use when, for example, the boot sinks into deeper mud and the resulting suction on the boot when the foot is lifted sticks the boot in place, causing the wearer to lift their foot out of the boot.
There is accordingly a need for a Wellington boot which allows easy donning and removal but provides improved retention of the wearers foot in place during use.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a Wellington boot having a tubular base portion with a toe end and a heel end in which, in use, a wearer’s foot engages with the toes proximate the toe end and the heel proximate the heel end, and a tubular upright portion extending substantially perpendicularly from the base portion and terminating in an upper opening through which, in use, a wearer can insert their foot in order to locate it in the base portion, the base portion and upright portion being integrally formed so as to be waterproof, the boot further comprising a heel clip, the heel clip comprising a web which engages around the heel end of the base portion, a first pair of spaced apart opposed fingers which extend from the web along either side of the base portion from the heel end towards the toe end, and a second pair of spaced apart opposed fingers which extend upwards from the web partially along opposing sides of the upright portion of the boot, wherein upper ends of the second pair of opposed fingers are biased towards each other so as to press the sides of the tubular portion of the boot towards each other at the upper ends of said second pair of fingers and thereby form a resiliently deformable constriction in the tubular inner area of the upright portion of the boot in the area of the boot in which, in use, the ankle of the wearer will locate, the upper ends of the second pair of fingers, in use, being urged apart as the wearer inserts their foot into the boot to allow the foot to engage in the foot portion of the boot and closing towards each other when the foot is fully inserted to retain the heel in position.
A boot in accordance with the invention has the advantage that the resilient deformability of the upper ends of the second pair of fingers of the heel clip allows easy insertion of the foot of a wearer into the boot but provides a retention which helps prevent unwanted movement of the heel during use and also reduces the possibility that the foot may, in use, be unintentionally removed from the boot when, for example, the wearer is moving through deep mud.
Preferably, the heel clip is separately formed from and securely attached to the boot so as to extend around the heel of the boot. In particular, the heel clip is preferably permanently adhered to the boot so as to extend around the outside of the back of the heel of the boot.
Preferably, the heel clip is made of a different material to, and in particular a more rigid material than the material of the base and upright portions of the boot. Preferably the base and upright portions are made of, and more especially molded from rubber material and the heel clip is formed of a plastic material such as thermoplastic polyurethane
The second pair of fingers are preferably joined together at a bottom end thereof by a web portion of the heel clip which extends around and partially up the back of the base portion of the boot.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, the boot includes a sole portion which is separately formed from and securely fastened to the bottom of the base portion, for example by adhesive. The heel clip then preferably includes a bottom flange which extended inwardly of the bottom edge of the heel clip, which flange extends between the bottom of the base portion and sole portion of the boot so as to be secured therebetween in order to assist in securing the heel clip in place.
The sole portion may particularly advantageously be formed of a different material to the base and upright portions and the heel clip, in particular from an expanded thermoplastic urethane material which has the advantage of providing particularly effective cushioning to the wearer. Alternatively, EVA foam material may be used for the sole portion.
The second pair of fingers are preferably separated by a U-shaped opening which extends centrally from the top of the second pair of fingers down the back of the heel clip towards the first pair of fingers, said U shaped opening terminating above the first pair of fingers so as to form the web portion which joins together the bottom of the second pair of fingers, which the web portion extends around the back of and partially up the heel of the boot.
The present invention further provides a heel clip for a boot according to the first aspect of the invention, the heel clip comprising a web which, in use, engaging around a heel end of a base portion of the boot, a first pair of spaced apart opposed fingers which extend forwardly of the web so as, in use, to extend along either side of the base portion of the boot from a heel end towards a toe end, and a second pair of spaced apart opposed fingers which extend upwardly from web so as, in use, to extend partially up opposing sides of an upright portion of the boot, wherein upper ends of the second pair of opposed fingers are biased towards and resiliency deformable away from each other so as, in use, to form a constriction in a tubular inner region of an upright portion of the boot in the area of the boot in which, in use, the ankle of the wearer will locate.
The heel clip is formed of a plastic material such as thermoplastic polyurethane.
The second pair of fingers are joined together at a bottom end thereof by the web which extends around and partially up the back of the base portion of the boot.
The heel clip preferably includes a bottom flange which extended inwardly of the bottom edge of the heel clip, in particular extends around and inwardly of the bottom of the first pair of fingers and web. This has the advantage that the flange may be positioned to extend between the bottom of the base portion of the boot and a separately formed sole portion of the boot so as to be secured therebetween in order to assist in securing the heel clip in place.
Each of the second pair of fingers preferably extends upwardly from the web at an acute to the longitudinal axis of the first pair of fingers, in particular at an angle between 70 and 90 degrees. The size of each finger will depend on the size of foot the boot is designed for. However, each of the second pair of fingers preferably extends a distance in the range of substantially 7 to substantially 9.5 cm, and in particular 8.5 cm from the bottom of the first part of fingers measured along the inclined length of the second pair of fingers. Each of said first pair of fingers preferably has a length in the range of 12 - 15 cm, and more particularly 13.5 cm measured from the back of the heel clip.
The second pair of fingers are preferably separated by a U-shaped opening which extends centrally from the top of the second pair of fingers down the back of the heel clip towards the first pair of fingers, said U shaped opening terminating above the first pair of fingers so as to form the web which joins together the bottom of the second pair of fingers, so that the web extends around the back of and partially up the heel of the boot.
The first pair of fingers are preferably symmetrical with each other and the second pair of fingers are preferably symmetrical with each other.
According to a still further aspect of the present invention there is provided a Wellington boot having a tubular base portion with a toe end and a heel end in which, in use, a wearer’s foot engages with the toes proximate the toe end and the heel proximate the heel end, and a tubular upright portion extending substantially perpendicularly from the base portion and terminating in an upper opening through which, in use, a wearer can insert their foot in order to locate it in the base portion, the base portion and upright portion being integrally formed so as to be waterproof, the boot further comprising a separately formed sole attached to the bottom of the base portion of the boot, the sole including a layer of one of EVA material and expanded thermoplastic urethane
Preferably, the bottom of the sole, which forms the base of the boot, has a layer of rubber material secured thereon.
In order that the invention may be well understood, there will now be described an embodiment thereof, given by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a heel clip of the invention;
Figure 2 is a top view of the heel clip of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a front view of the heel clip of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a back view of the heel clip of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a side view of a boot according to the invention including the heel clip of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a rear view of the boot of Figure 5;
Figure 7a is an enlarged rear view of part of a boot which does not form part of the present invention; and
Figure 7b is an enlarged rear view, corresponding with Figure 7a, of the boot of Figure 6.
Referring first to Figures 1 - 4, there is shown a heel clip 1 according to the present invention. The heel clip 1 is formed by two forked portions 2, 3 which extend generally perpendicularly to each other such that the second portion 3 extends upwardly from the first portion and which are integrally connected by a web 4. More particularly, a first pair of spaced apart fingers 2a, 2b, and a second pair of space apart fingers 3a, 3b extend from the web 4 in different planes as shown in Figure 3. The first pair of fingers 2a, 2b extending substantially parallel to each other has best shown in Figure 2. A flange 5 is also formed on the bottom of the web 4 and first pair of fingers 3a, 3b, the flange 5 extending inwardly from the fingers 2a, 2b and web as best shown in figure 3 so as to extend into the sole of a boot as described below.
The second pair of fingers 3a, 3b extend upwardly from the web 4 as shown in Figure 4, but in contrast to the first pair of fingers, the second pair of fingers are curved over towards each other so that the spacing between the upper ends 3c, 3d of the second pair of fingers is less than at the bottom where they connect to the web

The clip 1 is furthermore formed of a resiliently deformable material such that the upper ends 3c, 3d of the second pair of fingers 3a, 3b can be elastically urged apart to increase the space therebetween, the fingers 3a, 3b returning to their original position once the separating force is removed.
Referring next to Figure 5, there is shown a rubber boot 10 with the heel clip fastened thereto. The boot 10 has a base portion 11 which receives the foot of a wearer and an upright portion 12 which extends upwardly from the base portion 11 so as to extend around and up the wearer’s lower leg in use. The base and upright portions 11, 12 are integrally molded from rubber material. A sole 13 is separately formed from and attached to the bottom of the base portion 11 as best seen in Figure 7b. The sole 13 is formed from an upper layer of expanded thermoplastic urethane or EVA material 13a to the bottom of which is attached a lower layer of rubber material 13b which carries a tread pattern for the boot, which may be TPU material. The layers 13a, 13b may be attached together and to the bottom of the base portion 11 using any well known method, such as adhesive.
As shown in Figure 5, the heel clip 1 is attached to the outside of the back of the boot 10 so that the web 4 extends around the back of the heel 14 of the boot 10 with the first pair of fingers 2a, 2b extending forward along opposing outer sides of the base portion 11 towards the toe end therefore and the second pair of fingers 3a, 3b extending upwardly along opposing outer sides of the upright portion 12 of the boot
10. Furthermore, the flange 5 of the heel clip 1 extends under the base portion so as to engage between the sole 13 and the base portion 11. The heel clip 1 is secured in place by use of suitable known adhesive applied to the contacting surfaces of the fingers 3a, 3b, 2a, 2c, the web 4 and the flange 5. Suitable adhesive is well known in the art of shoe manufacture.
The length of the second set of fingers 3a, 3b is selected such that the upper ends thereof 3c, 3b are located just above the top of the heel of the wearer in the region of the back of the ankle. Due to the shape of the second pair of fingers 3a, 3b described above, the upper ends 3c, 3d press against the opposing outer sides of the boot 10, cause a constriction 15 in the inside of the boot. This is clearly illustrated in Figures 7a and 7b, Figure 7a showing a conventional boot without a heel clip of the invention fitted and Figure 7b showing a boot with the clip of the invention in place.
As the user inserts their foot into the boot 11, the foot will engage the sides of the boot at the constriction 15. The resilient deformability of the fingers 3a, 3b will allow them to move apart under the outward load of the user’s heel, allowing the heel to travel on down the boot and into position at the heel end of the base portion 11. The constriction 15 is sized to be narrower than the heel of the wearer so that the constriction 15 remains expanded until the heel has moved past it, the bias of the fingers 3a, 3b will cause the upper ends 3c, 3d to move back towards each other, pressing the sides of the boot 10 back towards each other and restoring the constriction. In this way, the heel of the wearer is retained in position in the boot.
In order to remove the boot, the wearer simply exerts an upward force on the heel sufficient to overcome the loading applied by the second pair of fingers 3a, 3b of the heel clip, re-opening the constrictions and allowing the heel and foot to move upwards and out of the boot. Due to the loading of the heel clip, the load required to be applied by the wearer is greater than for a conventional boot and hence the possibility of accidental withdrawal of the shoe from the boot is reduce.
Claims (22)
1. A Wellington boot having a tubular base portion with a toe end and a heel end in which, in use, a wearer’s foot engages with the toes proximate the toe end and the heel proximate the heel end, and a tubular upright portion extending substantially perpendicularly from the base portion and terminating in an upper opening through which, in use, a wearer can insert their foot in order to locate it in the base portion, the base portion and upright portion being integrally formed so as to be waterproof, the boot further comprising a heel clip, the heel clip comprising a web which engages around the heel end of the base portion, a first pair of spaced apart opposed fingers which extend from the web along either side of the base portion from the heel end towards the toe end, and a second pair of spaced apart opposed fingers which extend upwards from the web partially along opposing sides of the upright portion of the boot, wherein upper ends of the second pair of opposed fingers are biased towards each other so as to press the sides of the upright portion of the boot towards each other at the upper ends of said second pair of fingers and thereby form a resiliently deformable constriction in the tubular inner area of the upright portion of the boot in the area of the boot in which, in use, the ankle of the wearer will locate, the upper ends of the second pair of fingers, in use, being urged apart as the wearer inserts their foot into the boot to allow the foot to engage in the base portion of the boot and closing towards each other when the foot is fully inserted to retain the heel in position.
2. A Wellington boot according to claim 1, wherein the heel clip is separately formed from and securely attached to the boot so as to extend around the heel of the boot.
3. A Wellington boot according to claim 2, wherein the heel clip is permanently adhered to the boot so as to extend around the outside of the back of the heel of the boot.
4. A Wellington boot according to claim 2 or claim 3, wherein the heel clip is made of a different material to, and in particular a more rigid material than the material of the base and upright portions of the boot.

5. A Wellington boot according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the base and upright portions are made of, and more especially molded from rubber material and the heel clip is formed of a plastic material such as thermoplastic polyurethane
6. A Wellington boot according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the second pair of fingers are joined together at a bottom end thereof by a web portion of the heel clip which extends around and partially up the back of the base portion of the boot.
7. A Wellington boot according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the boot includes a sole portion which is separately formed from and securely fastened to the bottom of the base portion.
8. A Wellington boot according to claim y, wherein the heel clip includes a bottom flange which extended inwardly of the bottom edge of the heel clip, which flange extends between the bottom of the base portion and sole portion of the boot so as to be secured therebetween in order to assist in securing the heel clip in place.
9. A Wellington boot according to claim 8 or claim 9, wherein the sole portion is formed of a different material to the base and upright portions and the heel clip.
10. A Wellington boot according to claim 9, wherein the sole portion is formed from one of an expanded thermoplastic urethane material and an EVA foam material.
11. A Wellington boot according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the second pair of fingers are separated by a U-shaped opening which extends centrally from the top of the second pair of fingers down the back of the heel clip towards the first pair of fingers, said II shaped opening terminating above the first pair of fingers so as to form the web portion which joins together the bottom of the second pair of fingers, which web portion extends around the back of and partially up the heel of the boot.
12. A heel clip for a boot according to any of the preceding claims, the heel clip comprising a web which, in use, engaging around a heel end of a base portion of the boot, a first pair of spaced apart opposed fingers which extend forwardly of the web so as, in use, to extend along either side of the base portion of the boot from a heel
02 05 19 end towards a toe end, and a second pair of spaced apart opposed fingers which extend upwardly from web so as, in use, to extend partially up opposing sides of an upright portion of the boot, wherein upper ends of the second pair of opposed fingers are biased towards and resiliently deformable away from each other so as, in use, to form a constriction in a tubular inner region of an upright portion of the boot in the area of the boot in which, in use, the ankle of the wearer will locate.
13. A heel clip according to claim 12, wherein the second pair of fingers are joined together at a bottom end thereof by the web which extends around and partially up the back of the base portion of the boot.
14. A heel clip according to claim 12 or claim 13, wherein the heel clip includes a bottom flange which extended inwardly of the bottom edge of the heel clip.
15. A heel clip according to claim 14, wherein the bottom flange extends around and inwardly of the bottom of the first pair of fingers and web.
16. A heel clip according to any of claims 12 to 15, wherein each of the second pair of fingers extends upwardly from the web at an acute to the longitudinal axis of the first pair of fingers, in particular at an angle between 70 and 90 degrees.
17. A heel clip according to any of claims 12 to 16, wherein each of the second pair of fingers extends a distance in the range of substantially 7 to substantially 9.5 cm.
18. A heel clip according to any of claims 12 to 17, wherein each of said first pair of fingers has a length in the range of 12 - 15 cm.
19. A heel clip according to any of claims 12 to 18, wherein the second pair of fingers are separated by a U-shaped opening which extends centrally from the top of the second pair of fingers down the back of the heel clip towards the first pair of fingers, said U shaped opening terminating above the first pair of fingers so as to form the web which joins together the bottom of the second pair of fingers, so that the web extends around the back of and partially up the heel of the boot.
20. A heel clip according to any of claims 12 to 19, wherein the first pair of fingers are symmetrical with each other and the second pair of fingers are symmetrical with each other.

A Wellington boot having a tubular base portion with a toe end and a heel end in which, in use, a wearer’s foot engages with the toes proximate the toe end and the heel proximate the heel end, and a tubular upright portion extending substantially perpendicularly from the base portion and terminating in an upper opening through which, in use, a wearer can insert their foot in order to locate it in the base portion, the base portion and upright portion being integrally formed so as to be waterproof, the boot further comprising a separately formed sole attached to the bottom of the base portion of the boot, the sole including a layer of one of EVA material and expanded thermoplastic urethane.
22. A Wellington boot according to claim 21, wherein the bottom of the sole, which forms the base of the boot, has a layer of rubber material secured thereon.
