Abstract

A disc-shaped flame retardant gasket 2 for attachment to a wall, floor or ceiling of a building to surround an aperture in said wall, floor or ceiling through which a pipe or cables extend. The gasket is formed of an elastomeric compound coated or impregnated with flame retardant material. The gasket has an adhesive and liner 4 on one surface. The gasket also has a radial cut 6 extending for the outer edge of the gasket to its centre point and further radial notches 8 extending outwardly from the centre point.

Description

The present invention relates to a fire retardant disc for adhering to walls or ceilings to surround a pipe or cables extending therethrough.
Background to the invention
The spread of fire and smoke through apertures in walls and ceilings through which pipework and/or cables extend is a major hazard. Smoke and flames can easily flow through tiny gaps between the pipe or cable surface and the aperture boundary.
The present invention seeks to provide an effective solution to this problem which requires minimal installation time and effort.
Statement of invention
According to a first embodiment, there is provided a discshaped flame retardant gasket for attachment to a wall, floor or ceiling of a building to surround an aperture in said wall, floor or ceiling through which a pipe or cables extend, the gasket being formed of an elastomeric compound coated or impregnated with flame retardant material and having an adhesive and liner on one surface, the gasket further having a first radial cut extending from the edge of the gasket to its centre point, and further cuts extending outwardly from the centre point in a star formation.
Preferably each central cut extends outwardly towards the edge of the gasket to approximately half its radius.
Preferably, the adhesive and liner is double-sided sticky tape .
Preferably, the elastomeric compound is impregnated with graphite .

Detailed description of preferred embodiments
Referring to the figures, the invention provides a discshaped gasket 2 having on one surface an adhesive covered by a peelable liner 4.
The gasket is formed form a graphite filled elastomeric or rubber compound containing flame retardants. The gasket is flexible in order to meet intumescent requirements.
The gasket 2 is coated or impregnated with an intumescent material.
Extensive tests by the applicant have found that the gasket 2 is able to expand more than six times its original volume when subjected to high temperature. At temperatures of 160°C the graphite at the surface of the gasket begins to exfoliate. The level of exfoliation increases progressively as the temperature increases.
In use, the gasket 2 is adhered to a wall, floor or ceiling of a building by peeling away the release liner 4 to expose the adhesive. The gasket 2 is designed to fit over a pipe or cables and to be located around the pipe or cables at the boundary of an aperture in the ceiling, floor or wall through which the pipe or cables extend.
To this end, the gasket 2 has a radial cut 6 extending from the edge of the gasket 2 to its centre point to allow the gasket 2 to be split in order to be placed around the pipe or cables.
Furthermore, the gasket has five further cuts 8 extending outwardly from the centre point in a generally star formation to approximate half radius of the gasket 2. This allows the gasket 2 in use to be pressed around and envelop the pipe or cables forming a fire and smoke seal around them at their point of entry into the wall, ceiling or floor.
The adhesive layer may be a double-sided sticky tape.
The event of fire the intumescent graphite material quickly expands to completely fill the aperture to stop the fire or smoke spreading through it.
To provide a seal around cables or pipes of up to 26mm diameter, the diameter of the gasket would be typically 65mm.
To provide a seal around cables or pipes of up to 33mm diameter, the diameter of the gasket would be typically 8 0mm.
It will be understood, that the various embodiments described herein have been described by way of example only and that modifications may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined in the accompanying claims.

Claims (4)

1. A disc-shaped flame retardant gasket for attachment to a wall, floor or ceiling of a building to surround an aperture in said wall, floor or ceiling through which a pipe or cables extend, the gasket being formed of an elastomeric compound coated or impregnated with flame retardant material and having an adhesive and liner on one surface, the gasket further having a first radial cut extending from the edge of the gasket to its centre point, and further cuts extending outwardly from the centre point in a star formation.
2. Preferably each central cut extends outwardly towards the edge of the gasket to approximately half its radius .
3. A gasket according to claim 1, wherein the adhesive and liner is double-sided sticky tape.
4. A gasket according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the elastomeric compound is impregnated with graphite.
