Abstract
A frame for a canvas comprises four frame members A, B, C, D each having a groove along their length E which, in use, accepts the four tongues F to form the joints. A wedge G is then inserted into the additional slot H in one end of each member of the frame pushing the joint apart and enlarging the frame thereby stretching the canvas.
Description
An Expandable Frame for the Mounting, Stretching and Display of Artworks on Canvas and Similar Materials.
For Centuries artists have painted on canvas or similar materials stretched over frames normally made of wood.
The frame is constructed in such a way that by introducing wedges into the joints between each member, the frame is made bigger thereby stretching the canvas.
The complication of the joint makes it very difficult for the user to shorten the frame members should they wish to reduce the size of the frame.
The present invention relates to a frame that is easy to reduce in size by cutting off material from the mitred only end of two or all of the frame members.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1.
Shows in perspective one comer of the frame with the two abutting members of the frame (A+B) where the tongue (F) is pushed into the grooves (E) and the wedge (G) is pushed into the additional slot (H) pushing the abutting members of the frame apart.
Figure 2.
This shows the assembled frame with the four frame members (A, B, C, D) and the four tongues (F) after being inserted into the grooves (E) in each comer of the frame. The four wedges (G) are shown inserted into the additional slots (H) but not pushed in to force the abutting ends apart.
Figure 3.
This shows the frame as in Figure 2, after the wedges (G) have been pushed into the slot (H) thereby forcing the abutting ends of the frame apart.
Figure 4.
This shows one comer of the frame with the alternative wedge (I) inserted into the slot (H)
Figure 5.
This shows two opposite members of the frame being reduced in length by cutting off the mitred only ends of the two members
Figure 6.
This shows the modified wedge (I)
The invention relates to an expandable frame for the mounting, stretching and display of canvas with allows the user to reduce the size of the frame by cutting off the mitred only ends of two or all of the frame members.
Figure 5. shows two of the frame members being reduced.
With the use of the modified wedge (Figure 6,1) the frame will also expand and contract as changes in humidity affect the tension of the canvas.
An example of the frame will now be given with reference to the attached drawings.
The canvas is mounted onto the frame (Figure 2). The four frame members are assembled by means of the four tongues (F) being inserted into the grooves (E) in each comer of the frame (Figure 2). The canvas is now stretched by means of the wedges (G) being forced into the additional slots (H) present. The abutting ends of the four members (A, B, C, D) are now forced apart (Figure 1) making the frame larger (Figure 3) and thereby stretching the canvas.
If the user wishes to reduce the size of the frame; this is easily accomplished by cutting off material from the mitred only end of two or all of the frame members (Figure 5).
Should the finished canvas be intended for display in conditions of variable humidity then alternative wedges (Figure 4,1) should be used. These wedges are not solid wedges (G) but are modified (Figure 6) to allow them to flex to allow the frame to contract or expand as the canvas gets tighter or looser due to changes in humidity. The solid wedges (G) should be used for the initial expansion of the frame as the modified wedges (I) would not be strong enough to perform the initial stretch.
Claims (1)
- A frame for stretching an artists canvas comprising of four frame members each having a groove along their length such that, in use, the ends abut and a loose tongue is inserted to form a joint and in one end of each member a slot is present to accept a wedge which forces the abutting ends of the members apart thereby stretching the canvas.
