Abstract

A device 10 for infant transport composed of a frame assembly 12 comprising: a base 14 for supporting an infant in either standing or seated positions; a plurality of wheels 16a, 16b located on or adjacent the base and configured to engage a contact surface; an infant support member 18 for engaging the hands of an infant; and a handle member (20, see figure 2) for engaging the hands of an adult. The handle member is operable to steer and manoeuvre the wheels of the device. The handle may also comprise brake members 39 operable to operate a braking mechanism for slowing or stopping movement of at least one wheel. The infant support or hand rail may be substantially U shaped and may be covered in a padding material 28. The frame assembly or handle members may be adjustable so relative to the base. Finally, the device may be foldable between an in use operating position and a collapsed position for storage.

Description

Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a device for transporting an infant and configured to be operable by an accompanying adult.
Background
Young babies are conventionally transported in a buggy or pushchair. When the baby grows up and begins to walk, the child is more reluctant to be placed in the buggy and would prefer to walk independently. The young child is not however capable of walking significant distances.
Conventional buggy boards are available which attach to a pushchair and allow the infant to stand on the board while the pushchair is manoeuvred by an accompanying adult.
There is however a need for a mode of transport for transporting an infant safely and over significant distances which does not require attachment to an additional mode of transport such as for example a pushchair and is easily collapsible and transportable.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a device for transporting an infant, the device comprising a frame assembly comprising:
a base for supporting an infant;
a plurality of wheels located on or adjacent the base and configured to engage a contact surface;
an infant support member for engaging the hands of an infant; and a handle member for engaging the hands of an adult, in which the handle member is operable to steer and manoeuvre the wheels of the device.
The handle member preferably further comprises at least one brake member operable to operate a brake system for decreasing and/or stopping movement of at least one wheel.
The infant support member is preferably substantially U-shaped in configuration. It is however to be understood that the infant support member may have any suitable shape. The infant support member is preferably configured to extend from and along one side of an infant towards and along the opposing side of an infant providing an opening therebetween for receiving the infant.
The device may further comprise at least one padding member configured to receive and extend over at least a portion of the infant support member for contacting an infant.
The infant support member may comprise a first front end and an opposed rear end defining a cavity therebetween for receiving an infant, and in which the handle member is connectable to and extends from the rear end of the infant support member.
The frame assembly is preferably adjustable such that the height as measured between the handle member and the base is adjustable. The frame assembly may comprise at least one upright portion extending between the base and the infant support member. The upright portion(s) may be adjustable in height. The handle member is preferably adjustable such that the height as measured between the handle member and the base is adjustable.
The frame assembly is preferably moveable between a first operating position providing a base for supporting an infant, and a second collapsed position for storage and transportation.
The base is preferably configured to be foldable so as to be moveable between a first operating position for supporting an infant, and a second folded position.
The device may further comprise one or more side panels extending between the infant support member and the base of the frame assembly. The one or more side panels are preferably collapsible.
The device may comprise three wheels arranged in a triangular configuration.
The device preferably further comprises at least one attachment feature for securing the device to a buggy.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying Figures.
Brief Description of Figures
Figure 1 shows a schematic illustration of a perspective view from above of a first embodiment of a device according to one embodiment of the present invention in an operating configuration; and
Figure 2 shows a schematic illustration of a perspective view from below of a second embodiment of a device according to the present invention, in a collapsed configuration.
Detailed Description of Figures
With reference to the Figures, the infant device 10 for transporting an infant comprises a frame assembly 12 comprising:
a base 14 for supporting an infant;
a plurality of wheels 16 located on or adjacent the base 14 and configured to engage a contact surface;
an infant support member 18 for engaging the hands of an infant; and a handle member 20 for engaging the hands of an adult, in which the handle member 20 is operable to steer and manoeuvre the wheels 16 of the device.
The base 14 is a planar, substantially triangular shaped member. It is however to be understood that the base 14 may have any suitable configuration. The base 14 comprises a front end 22 and an opposed rear end 24. The base 14 is operable to be rotatable relative to the frame assembly so as to be moveable between a first operating position (as shown in Figure 1) and a second collapsed, stored position (as shown in Figure 2).
A first wheel 16a is located adjacent the front end 22 of the base. A pair of spaced apart wheels 16b, 16b’ are located adjacent the rear end 24 of the base 14.
The frame assembly 12 further comprises an upright portion 26 extending upwardly from, and substantially perpendicular to the plane defined by, the base 14. The upright portion 26 is located adjacent and is in communication with the first wheel 16a. The upright portion 26 is adjustable in height.
The infant support member 18 is tubular. The infant support member 18 is substantially U-shaped providing a pair of spaced apart free ends 29, 29’. The infant support member 18 is configured to extend from and along a first side of an infant to and along a second opposed side of an infant so as to define an opening for receiving the infant. Padding 28 is received on and extends across substantially all of the infant support member 18.
The device 10 further comprises a pair of spaced apart handle portions 30. Each handle portion extends from and is in communication with a corresponding free end 29, 29’ of the infant support member 18.
In the first embodiment a pair of brake portions 39 are provided, one on each handle portion 30. In the second embodiment there is provided a single continuous handle 20 and a single brake 93. Each brake portion is in communication with a braking system provided on one or more wheels 16 of the device. Each brake portion is operable by the adult.
In use, the infant stands on base 14 and holds onto the infant support member 18. The adult may adjust the frame assembly 12, or example the upright portion 26 or the handle member 20 so that the height of each handle portion 30 is at a predetermined level relative to the base 14 of the device 10. The adult may then contact the handle portions 30 and manoeuvre the device 10 as desired and may operate the brakes as and when desired.
The device 10 therefore provides a degree of independence to the infant, who may easily mount and dismount the device as required, while enabling the adult to have full control of the direction and speed of the device 10
