Abstract
256,382. Houghtaling, W. A., and Western Union Telegraph Co. July 7, 1925. Automatic telegraphs; repeating systems using contact-making relays; distributor systems.-In an automatic telegraph system operating on the Baudot multiplex principle, the repeater equipment at an intermediate station comprises only a single set of relays functioning in each channel in succession, and locking circuits are unnecessary. The repeating apparatus interposed between adjacent line sections L, L<1> includes a rotary repeater and a set of polarized relays PR operable by impulses received from section L and connected to each channel of the system, unless as shown one channel is to be connected for local printing and transmitting, or to a branch line or lines, and a source of energy g for imparting impulses into the next section L<1>. The similar rotary repeater and set of relays PR<1> serve for transmission of signals in the opposite direction. Each rotary repeater comprises a pair of segmented rings r<2>, s<2> constituted as four channels with five segments in each: the magnets of the polarized relays are connected in multiple respectively to the corresponding segments of the channels of the ring r<2> and the armatures are connected in multiple respectively to the corresponding segments of the ring s<2> The brushes of the rotary repeaters are driven synchronously with those of the transmitters and receivers at the terminal stations A, C, but the transmitting ring s<2> is displaced relatively to the receiving ring r<2> through three segments so that a received impulse is not transmitted until the brushes have passed over two intervening segments, thus allowing time for the actuated armatures to settle down on their contacts before the impulsing current from the source g is passed, and so preventing chattering.
