Abstract

An interlocking loft insulation board having projections and recesses along the edges to create a join with an adjacent board. The board is preferably composed of a solid insulation material layer 4 such as polyurethane (PUR) or polyisocyanurate (PIR), and a foam PVC layer 5, bonded together to create a panel. The projections and recesses are preferably formed by the two layers of the insulation panel being bonded together in an offset manner creating an overlap 6 which is used to join panels together. In another embodiment the projections and recesses can be cut into a single layer solid insulation board.

Description

Interlocking loft insulation boards with decorative white finish
Conventional solid insulation boards are an effective means of installing thermal insulation within a new or existing structure but may require additional work to conceal them and decorate as necessary. There may also be a risk of draft between the boards where they abut.
The present invention proposes an interlocking solid loft insulation board with a decorative white finish which when fitted to a structure offers both a draft free insulation and a decorative ceiling - like finish. Boards can also be fitted to walls where a seamless decorative finish is not essential.
The interlocking insulation boards can be formed in several ways but the following description is presently preferred. The first of two components is a generic solid insulation material such as polyurethane (PUR) or polyisocyanurate (PIR), rectangular in shape with a typical thickness of between 50mm and 100 mm. The second component is a white board such as foam pvc, sharing the same dimensions as the insulation board, but with a typical thickness of between 3mm and 5mm, and is bonded to the former to create a decorative white finish. The interlocking feature of the boards is created by bonding the decorative board to the insulation board in an offset manner along two adjacent sides thus creating projections and recesses along the combined boards edges. As the two component parts share the same lengths and widths, the extent of the projections will be equal to the extent of the recesses.
Where a decorative finish is not required, the interlocking insulation board can be made by cutting projections and recesses into a single solid insulation board. The interlocking loft insulation board can also be made by bonding together two solid insulation boards in the offset manner as previously described to create interlocking projections and recesses along the combined boards edges.
The size of the interlocking board may vary. For example, a board measuring 1200mm long and 600mm wide would suit domestic application as it could be delivered to the loft area via the loft hatch. Larger boards, for example 2400mm long and 1200mm wide would suit commercial applications in larger buildings.
The fitment of the interlocking insulation boards to the rafters is by means of screw fixing, nail fixing or high strength bonding agent. The interlocking insulation boards are bonded to each other during installation at every point of overlap, to both eliminate draft between boards and strengthen the overall installation. Boards are to be cut as necessary to fit tightly to walls, roof hips, valleys etc.
For the purposes of illustrating the invention, there is shown in the drawings forms which are presently preferred; it being understood, however, that the invention is not limited to the precise arrangements and materials shown.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a frontal view of the interlocking insulation board,
Figure 2 shows a side view of the interlocking insulation board,
Figure 3 shows how the interlocking insulation boards are fitted in relation to the roof rafters,
Figure 4 shows a side view of the interlocking insulation boards fitted against the roof rafters.
In figurel the solid insulation board 4 is shown with the decorative white board 5 bonded to it in an offset position thus creating the points of overlap 6. During installation, a bonding agent is applied to the point of overlap 6 to firmly fix the boards together and eliminate draft. Where the boards are in contact with the rafters, fixings are placed through the board and into the rafter.
In figure 3 it can be seen that irregularly spaced rafters 1 would not affect the installation of the interlocking boards 2 . The boards are installed in horizontal courses and vertical joints should be staggered in successive courses to strengthen the installation.
Figure 4 shows how the interlocking insulation boards 2 fit against the roof rafters 1. Figure 4 also demonstrates how the boards are cut 3 to fit tightly both against the surfaces of the loft and at points of intersection.
