Abstract

A traffic information sign comprises a first visual indicator formed from a number of separate light sources and a second visual indicator with a variable message sign. The light sources of the first visual indicator are arranged in a pattern that allows for forming an illuminated X, or arrows pointing diagonally in either direction. The light sources may be differently coloured. The second visual indicator comprises a first and a second panel. The first panel is provided with insignia on both surfaces and is hinged so that it is movable between a first position wherein a first surface is visible, and a second position wherein a second surface is visible. The second panel has indicia which is covered when the first panel is in the first position, and revealed in the second position. The second panel may also be rotatable in the plane of the panel so that the orientation of an indicia on the panel, e.g. an arrow, can be altered. Motors may be provided for moving the panels and they may be remotely controlled. The sign may be fixed to the rear of a vehicle to warn traffic.

Traffic information sign
The present information relates to a traffic information sign. These signs are known as such, and so are vehicle mounted signs, used for providing temporary traffic information, in particular when road work is performed, an accident has happened, or inspections take place.
During these aforementioned circumstances, traffic signs need to be placed that match the actual situation. Not only is this case-dependent, but also dependent on the fact if the signalling needs to take place during day or night or both.
Most existing traffic signs are designed or optimized for only one of these purposes, and are limited to a single picture or other indication.
Therefor a need exists for a multifunctional traffic information sign, that can be used in multiple circumstances, and be easily changed from one purpose to another.
The present invention thereto proposes a traffic information sign, comprising a first visual indicator; and a second visual indicator, wherein: the first indicator panel comprises a number of light sources, arranged in a pattern that allows for forming an X-shape, an arrow pointing from the left top to the right bottom and an arrow from the left top to the right bottom, one at a time, and wherein the second visual indicator comprises at least a first and a second panel, wherein at least the second panel is movable between at least one position wherein a first surface of the second panel is visible, and a second position wherein a second surface ofthe second panel is visible and wherein the first panel covers at least a part of the second panel in the first position; and the first part reveals said part of the second panel in the second position.
The sign according to the invention can be used to indicate that a lane is closed by displaying a light cross on the first panel, or that traffic has to move by at the left or right side of the panel, by displaying a light arrow on the first panel. A cross may be indicated in red or green, and arrows in white, yellow, orange or green for instance.
For that purpose, the light sources are discrete separate light sources.
The second panel may comprise multiple hingable parts that can be flapped onto each other, like pages of a book. A text can be depicted on them, or an image, such as a speed or traffic sign.
Additionally and/or alternatively, the second visible indicator comprises a part which is rotatable in the plane ofthe panel. The rotatable part may comprise comprises a picture of an arrow. The rotatable part may be driven, and in particular be remotely controlled, for instance from the cabin of a truck if the traffic information sign is vehicle mounted. The first and/or the second panel may also be collapsible.
The invention is further elucidated with reference to the attached figures which show preferred embodiments of the traffic information sign according to the invention. The figures are in no way limitative for the scope of protection of the present invention, which is defined in the following claims.
