A COVERING FOR A BUILDING COMPONENT
The present invention relates to a covering for a building component and in particular to an adhesively attachable covering for a lintel.
When constructing a building, it is desirable in certain circumstances to include ornate or interesting feature pieces which add to the overall effect of the building or conform the building to the architectural style of those around it. These details are often associated with windows or doors in a building and may take the form of arches or surrounds. Such details were traditionally constructed on site and using traditional brick construction methods which is both time consuming and requires a high degree of skill and craftsmanship. Modern approaches to forming such feature elements involve the installation of a suitably shaped lintel onto which brick or other masonry coverings are attached to provide a finished effect which is aesthetically composed of masonry relevant to the building and conforms to the shape of the lintel therein behind.
Most commonly, these masonry coverings come in the form of brick slips which are relatively thin brick components fitted to a lintel to provide the required shape and aesthetic. Brick slips can be adhesively bonded to the lintel via a suitable adhesive and current solutions also provide cut-outs in the lintel. This allows a portion of the adhesive to pass there through and form a mechanical gripping formation on the backside of the lintel, further enhancing the grip the adhesive has on the lintel. While this addresses the grip with respect to the bond between the lintel and the adhesive, the bond between the brick slip and the adhesive is often just dictated by the interface of the adhesive and the brick slip which can sometimes be inadequate due to a surface which may be too smooth, too polished, or too powdery. This then becomes the weakest link in the assembly.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the problem of providing a masonry slip for attachment to a building component by adhesive.

Figure 2 is a soffit view of the present invention.
Figure 3 is a section view of the present invention at line A-A of figure 1
In the drawing, there is shown a covering element support assembly indicated generally by the reference numeral 1. The covering element support assembly 1 has at least one covering element 2 that is associated with at least one building component 3 by means of an attachment mechanism 4 whereby the attachment mechanism 4 has two different attaching methods for joining the building component 3 and the covering element 2. One of the attaching methods 15 provides a non-invasive affixment between the building component 3 and the covering element 2. The other attaching arrangement 5 provides an invasive affixment between the building component 3 and the covering element 2. The non-invasive affixment is via use of an adhesive 15 whereas the invasive affixment is via the use of a plurality of mechanical fasteners 5. The covering element 2 is attached to the building component 3 by both an adhesive 15 and by mechanical fasteners 5 for improving the safety of the joint 6 of the covering element 2 with the building component 3 and guarantees to maintain the joint 6 between the building component 3 and the covering element 2 in particular when the performances of the adhesive 15 alone would not be sufficient.
The plurality of mechanical fasteners 5 have attaching components 7 that act independently and in addition to the adhesive 15. The plurality of mechanical fasteners 5 have threaded fasteners 7 such as screws and/or bolts etc. These threaded fasteners 7 cooperate with corresponding elements such as nuts (not shown) incorporated into the building component 3 and/or the covering element 2. The mechanical fasteners 5 are made of stainless steel or carbon steel and have a corrosion coating.
For each fastener 5, the covering element 2 and the building component 3 has aligned holes (not shown) preferably made by a hammer drill (not shown), and the corresponding fastener 5 is inserted though the holes (not shown) preferably made by a powered impact driver (not shown). The mechanical fasteners 5 pass through the adhesive 15 and are arranged along at least one dimension of the covering element 2. The mechanical fasteners 5 and the adhesive 15 extend longitudinally along all or part of the covering element 2. The mechanical fasteners 5 and the adhesive 15 extend in a straight line which is substantially parallel to a longitudinal edge of the covering element 2. All of the mechanical fasteners 5 are aligned along the same straight line and arranged at a fixed distance relative to each other (as illustrated in figure 1). The fasteners 5 are arranged so to strengthen the joint 6 between the covering element 2 and the building component 3, without weakening the structural features of the covering element 2 and/or of the building component 3.
The adhesive 15 has a thickness between 2 mm to 4mm and the covering element 2 has at least one adhesive receiving component 16 which permits the adhesive 15 to travel or expand thereinto. The adhesive receiving components 16 are recesses, dimples, or other such voids formed in the covering element 2. It will be appreciated that the adhesive receiving components 16 may alternatively be projections such as spaced apart studs or ridges and grooves locatable on the covering element 2. The adhesive receiving components 16 of the building component facing surface 8 of the covering element 2 extend longitudinally along all or part of the covering element 2 in a straight line which is substantially parallel to a longitudinal edge of the covering element 2. The adhesive receiving components 16 have a channel which is a dovetail or similarly crosssectional shaped channel formed in a building component facing surface 8 of the covering element 2.
The covering element 2 has a portion which extends between the building component facing surface 8 of the covering element 2 and the decorative outer surface 9 opposing the building component facing surface 8 of the covering element 2. The adhesive receiving components 16 extend in a direction from the building component facing surface 8 of the covering element 2, towards the decorative outer surface 9 of the covering element 2. The orientation and/or cross-sectional shape of the adhesive receiving components 16 prevents the covering element 2 from moving in a direction away from the building component 3 when the adhesive 15 has set in the adhesive receiving components 16.
The building component 3 is a lintel formed of a metal or metal alloy. The covering element 2 is a masonry brick slip.
The covering element support assembly 1 further has mounting components 10 for associating the building component 3 to the structural support member of a building. The mounting components are made up of bearing plates 10 that are mechanically coupleable to the structural support member of a building. The covering element 2 has a finished and/or decorative surface 11 intended to be viewed when the covering element support assembly 1 is installed.
The orientation and/or cross sectional shape of the covering element 2 prevents the covering element 2 from moving in a direction away from the building component 3. The covering element 2 has a shaped portion (not shown) to accommodate a corresponding complementary shaped portion (not shown) defined in the structural building.
The covering element support assembly 1 has a grid or mesh (not shown) made of metal or metal alloy. The mesh (not shown) is mechanically couplable to the building component 3. Alternatively, the building component 3 comprises a perforated soffit and/or fascia.

Further, at least part of the portion 12 of the building component 3 to which the covering element 2 is attached has keying arrangement (not shown) for improving the bond between the adhesive 15 and the building component 3. The keying arrangement (not shown) is provided by interfering with the integrity of the surface of the wall 12 of the building component 3 i.e. making the portion perforated. The keying arrangement (not shown) is provided by the roughening the surface of the portion 12 of the building component 3 or dimpling of the wall 12.
The building component 3 has a fascia wall 13 and a soffit wall 14 and one or both surfaces have keying arrangement (not shown). The joint 6 of the covering element 2 and the building component 3 by both the adhesive 15 is obtained offsite in a factory environment, while the joint 6 of the covering element 2 with the building component 3 by the mechanical fasteners 5 is obtained onsite.
