Abstract

A vehicle seat support comprising a lumbar support portion 12, (112, figure 6) adjacent a seat backrest 13, (113) and in communication with spaced apart arm supports 14, 14, (114, 114). The position and/or orientation of the lumbar support portion and/or arm supports relative to the vehicle seat are independently adjustable. The vehicle seat support may comprise a sheet steel support frame. The arm supports may rotate relative to the lumbar support portion. The vehicle seat support may comprise a base portion (111) with vent openings (117). Also disclosed is a vehicle seat insert comprising an elongate support frame 202 received within and extend across a gap between a seat side portion and adjacent vehicle component. The elongate support frame 202 has a tapered transverse profile and comprises an upper surface 204 located at or adjacent a seat portion. A plurality of spaced apart storage containers (208, figure 11) removably received within the support frame 202 provide an opening (210) located adjacent the upper surface 204. Preferably, the vehicle seat support or insert catches items or personal belongings that accidentally fall out or drop from users clothing, preventing the items from accessing, becoming lost or trapped within narrow gaps.

A Vehicle Seat Support
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a vehicle seat support for use in vehicles such as cars, vans, or lorries. In particular, the present invention relates to a vehicle support for minimising or preventing loss of personal belongings when seated within a vehicle.
Background
When seated in a vehicle, it is possible for personal belongings to be accidentally dropped or to fall out of a user’s clothing and become lost within narrow gaps located between the vehicle seat and other components of the vehicle, or within gaps between the back rest and seat portion of the vehicle seat. Due to the size restrictions of the gaps it becomes difficult to retrieve the lost belongings.
Prior Art
US 2015/0076872 (Carithers et al) discloses a liner for catching items that fall between seat cushions. The liner is adapted to be removably received within the gap between the seat cushions and is arranged to provide a cavity for catching loose items.
The present invention arose in order to overcome problems suffered by existing devices.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a vehicle seat support comprising:
a lumbar support portion arranged in use to be positioned adjacent a backrest of a vehicle seat; a pair of spaced apart arm supports, in which each arm support is arranged in use to be positioned adjacent a side portion of a seat portion of a vehicle seat;
in which the lumbar support portion is in communication with each spaced apart arm support, and in which the position and/or orientation of one or more of the lumbar support portion and arm supports, relative to the vehicle seat, are independently adjustable.
The vehicle seat support may further comprise a support frame attached to each of the lumbar support portion and the pair of spaced apart arm supports.
In contrast to the prior art therefore the present invention provides a vehicle seat support which restricts or prevents access to gaps provided between seat cushions or other components of the vehicle so as to minimise any risk of belongings becoming lost or trapped while travelling within a vehicle.
The support frame, lumbar support portion, and the pair of spaced apart arm supports are preferably provided as a single, integral unit. It is however to be understood that the vehicle seat support may be provided as a plurality of separate modular units which are capable of being assembled to provide the vehicle seat support.
The support frame may be composed of any suitable material. For example, the support frame may be formed from sheet steel. The support frame is preferably composed of strong material which is capable of providing a degree of flexibility with respect to the position of the component parts of the vehicle seat support/
At least one arm support is preferably rotatable about at least one axis relative to the lumbar support portion. Each arm support preferably comprises a first end located adjacent the lumbar support portion and a second opposed free end. A longitudinal axis preferably extends between the first and second ends of the arm support. Each arm support preferably provides an upper contact surface for receiving an arm of a user. In one embodiment at least one arm support is rotatable about an axis extending within the plane of the upper contact surface and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the arm support. In a further embodiment, at least one arm support is rotatable about an axis extending perpendicular to the plane of the upper contact surface and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the arm support.
Each arm support may comprise a first portion for engagement with the support frame, and a second portion for providing an upper contact surface.
The arm supports preferably provide a curved upper contact surface. It is however to be understood that the arm supports may provide an upper contact surface having any suitable shape.
The lumbar support preferably comprises:
a back rest portion arranged in use to be positioned adjacent a backrest of a vehicle seat; and a base portion extending from the back rest portion of the lumbar support and shaped and dimensioned so as to be arranged in use to extend from adjacent a backrest of a vehicle and to be positioned adjacent a seat portion of a vehicle seat.
The arm supports may be arranged in use to extend from or adjacent a side portion of a seat portion of a vehicle seat and to extend across and to prevent access to a gap located between the side portion of the seat portion of the vehicle seat and other adjacent components of the vehicle.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of securing a vehicle seat support as herein described to a vehicle seat, the method comprising:
positioning the lumbar support portion adjacent the back rest of the vehicle seat such that a portion of the lumbar support portion extends from the back rest, across a gap provided between the back rest and a seat portion of the vehicle seat, that is positioned adjacent the seat portion of the vehicle seat; and positioning the arm supports adjacent each opposed side portion of the seat portion of the vehicle seat, such that each arm support extends from the side portion and across a gap provided between the side portion of the seat portion of the vehicle seat and adjacent components of the vehicle.
According to one embodiment, the vehicle seat support may further comprise a base portion arranged in use to be located adjacent a seat portion of a vehicle seat, and in which the base portion is attached to each of the lumbar support portion and the pair of spaced apart arm supports.
The base portion may further comprise a plurality of spaced apart vent openings.
The base portion, lumbar support portion, and the pair of spaced apart arm supports are provided as a single integral unit. It is however to be understood that the vehicle seat support may be provided as a plurality of separate modular components which may be assembled to provide the vehicle seat support.
The vehicle seat support may be composed of flexible silicone sheeting.
The vehicle seat support may be moveable from a first position in which the lumbar support portion, base portion, and each arm support extends within a single plane, to a second position in which the lumbar support portion is arranged to be located adjacent a back rest of a vehicle seat, the base portion is arranged in use to be position adjacent a seat portion of a vehicle seat, and each arm support is arranged to be position adjacent each side of the seat portion of a vehicle seat.
The lumbar support portion or arm supports may comprise an external surface and an internal structure. The external surface may be displaceable or removable so as to allow for cleaning purposes, and may comprise a wipeclean or washable material, such as leather, vinyl or fabric. In some embodiments the external surface may comprise a mesh or perforations, so as to enable matter to pass through the surface, portions or supports.
The vehicle seat support may further comprise an internal support mesh structure, which may be arranged in use to adjust the positioning and shape of the vehicle seat support. The structure may be reconfigurable and/or comprise resilience so as to maintain a preferred or adjusted shape.
The arm supports may be arranged in use to extend from or adjacent each side portion of a seat portion of a vehicle seat and to extend across and to prevent access to a gap located between the side portion of the seat portion of the vehicle seat and other adjacent components of the vehicle.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of securing a vehicle seat support as herein described to a vehicle seat, the method comprising:
providing a vehicle seat support in the first position;
moving each of the lumbar support portion and arm supports so as to extend perpendicular to the plane defined by the base portion of the vehicle seat support;
positioning the base portion adjacent the seat portion of the vehicle seat, and the lumbar support portion adjacent the back rest portion of the vehicle seat; and moving the arm supports into a predetermined position so as to extend from the base portion and across a gap provided between each side portion of the seat portion of the vehicle seat and adjacent components of the vehicle.
According to a further aspect, the present invention provides a vehicle seat insert comprising:
an elongate support frame shaped and dimensioned to be received within and extend substantially across a gap provided between a side portion of a seat portion of a vehicle seat and an adjacent component of the vehicle, in which the elongate support frame comprises an upper surface arranged in use to be located at or adjacent a seat portion of a vehicle seat, and in which the support frame has a tapered transverse profile; and a plurality of storage containers shaped and dimensioned to be removably received within and spaced apart from each other within the support frame, in which each storage container provides an opening located adjacent the upper surface of the support frame.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a vehicle seat comprising one or more of:
a vehicle seat support as herein described; and/or a vehicle seat insert as herein described.

Detailed Description of Figures
With reference to Figures 1 to 5, the vehicle seat support 10 according to one embodiment comprises a lumbar support portion 12 arranged in use to be positioned adjacent a backrest of a vehicle seat 13; and a pair of spaced apart arm supports 14, 14’. Each arm support 14, 14’ is arranged in use to be positioned adjacent a side portion 15, 15’ of a seat portion 16 of a vehicle seat.
The vehicle seat support 10 further comprises a support frame 18. The support frame in this embodiment is composed of sheet steel. It is however to be understood that the support frame may be composed of any suitable material which is capable of providing strength whilst also provided a degree of flexibility.
The support frame 18, lumbar support portion 12, and the pair of spaced apart arm supports 14, 14’ are provided as a single, integral unit. It is however to be understood that each component of the vehicle seat support 10 may be provided as a separate component capable of being assembled to provide the vehicle seat support 10.
As can be seen from Figure 3, at least one arm support 14’ is rotatable about at least one axis relative to the lumbar support portion 12 or support frame 18. This enables the user to be able to get in and out of the vehicle easily without restricting the user’s degree of movement.
Each arm support 14, 14’ comprises a first end 20, 20’ located adjacent the lumbar support portion 12 and a second opposed free end 22, 22’. A longitudinal axis A-A’ extends between the first 20, 20’ and second ends 22, 22’ of the arm support 14, 147 Each arm support 14, 14’ provides an upper contact surface 24, 24’ for receiving an arm of a user. At least one arm support 14, 14’ is rotatable about an axis extending perpendicular to the plane of the upper contact surface 24, 24’ and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the arm support. It is however to be understood that the arm support(s) 14, 14’ may be rotatable about an axis extending in another direction. For example, the arm support(s) may be rotatable about an axis extending within the plane of the upper contact surface 24, 24’ and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the arm support.
As can be seen in the Figures, each arm support 14, 14’ comprises a first portion 26, 26’ for engagement to the support frame 18, and a second portion 28, 28’ for providing an upper contact surface 24, 24’.
The arm supports 14, 14’ provide a curved upper contact surface.
The position and/or orientation of one or more of the lumbar support portion 12 and arm supports 14, 14’ (and in particular the second portion 28, 28’) relative to the vehicle seat are independently adjustable.
The lumbar support 12 comprises: a back rest portion 30 arranged in use to be positioned adjacent a backrest 13 of a vehicle seat; and a base portion 32 extending from the back rest portion 30 of the lumbar support 12 and shaped and dimensioned so as to be arranged in use to extend from adjacent a backrest 13 of a vehicle seat and to be positioned adjacent a seat portion 16 of a vehicle seat.
In use, the back rest potion 30 of the lumbar support 12 is positioned adjacent the backrest 13 of the seat. The base portion extends from the backrest 13 to be positioned adjacent the seat portion 16 of the seat. The base portion 32 is therefore arranged to prevent access to any gap provided between the back rest 13 and seat portion 16 of a vehicle seat.
The arm supports 14, 14’ are each arranged in use to extend from or adjacent a side portion of a seat portion of a vehicle seat and to extend across and to prevent access to a gap located between the side portion of the seat portion of the vehicle seat and other adjacent components of the vehicle.
With reference to Figures 6 to 10, according to one embodiment the vehicle seat support 110 comprises a lumbar support portion 112 arranged in use to be positioned adjacent a backrest of a vehicle seat 13; and a pair of spaced apart arm supports 114, 114’. Each arm support 14, 14’ is arranged in use to be positioned adjacent a side portion 115, 115’ of a seat portion 116 of a vehicle seat. The vehicle seat support 110 further comprises a base portion 111 arranged in use to be located adjacent a seat portion 116 of a vehicle seat 113. The base portion 111 is attached to each of the lumbar support portion 112 and the pair of spaced apart arm supports 114, 114’.
The base portion 111 further comprises a plurality of spaced apart vent openings 117.
The base portion 111, lumbar support portion 112, and the pair of spaced apart arm supports 114, 114’ are provided as a single integral unit. It is however to be understood that the vehicle seat support may be provided as a plurality of separate modular components which may be assembled to provide the vehicle seat support.
The vehicle seat support 110 is composed of flexible silicone sheeting. The vehicle seat support is moveable from a first position (as shown in Figures 7 and 8) in which the lumbar support portion 112, base portion 111, and each arm support 114, 114’ extends within a single plane, to a second operative position in which the lumbar support portion 112 is arranged to be located adjacent a back rest 113 of a vehicle seat, the base portion 111 is arranged in use to be position adjacent a seat portion 116 of a vehicle seat, and each arm support 114, 114’ is arranged to be position adjacent each side 115, 115’ of the seat portion of a vehicle seat.
The vehicle seat support 110 further comprise an internal support mesh arranged in use to adjust the positioning and shape of the vehicle seat support. The internal support mesh provides support to the vehicle seat support 110.
The arm supports 114, 114’ are arranged in use to extend from or adjacent each side portion of a seat portion of a vehicle seat and to extend across and to prevent access to a gap located between the side portion of the seat portion of the vehicle seat and other adjacent components of the vehicle.
In use, the vehicle seat support 110 is provided in the first storage position. Each of the lumbar support portion 112 and arm supports 114, 114’ are then moved so as to extend perpendicular to the plane defined by the base portion of the vehicle seat support (as shown in Figure 9). The base portion 111 is positioned adjacent the seat portion 116 of the vehicle seat. The lumbar support portion 112 is positioned adjacent the back rest portion 113 of the vehicle seat. The arms supports 114, 114’ are then moved into a predetermined position so as to extend from the base portion and across a gap provided between each side portion of the seat portion of the vehicle seat and adjacent components of the vehicle.
With reference to Figures 11 to 14, the present invention provides a vehicle seat insert 200 elongate support frame 202 shaped and dimensioned to be received within and extend substantially across a gap provided between a side portion of a seat portion of a vehicle seat and an adjacent component of the vehicle. The elongate support frame 202 comprises an upper surface 204 arranged in use to be located at or adjacent a seat portion 206 of a vehicle seat. It can be seen from the Figures that the support frame 101 has a tapered transverse profile.
The vehicle seat insert further comprises a plurality of storage containers 208 shaped and dimensioned to be removably received within and spaced apart from each other within the support frame 202. Each storage container 208 provides an opening 210 located adjacent the upper surface of the support frame. The insert may comprise any suitable number of storage containers.
The invention has been described by way of examples only and it will be appreciated that variation may be made to the above-mentioned embodiments without departing from the scope of invention. Firstly it will be understood that any features described in relation to any particular embodiment may be featured in combinations with other embodiments.

Claims (22)

Claims
1. A vehicle seat support comprising:
a lumbar support portion arranged in use to be positioned adjacent a backrest of a vehicle seat; and a pair of spaced apart arm supports, in which each arm support is arranged in use to be positioned adjacent a side portion of a seat portion of a vehicle seat, in which the lumbar support portion is in communication with each spaced apart arm support, and in which the position and/or orientation of one or more of the lumbar support portion and arm supports relative to the vehicle seat are independently adjustable.
2. A vehicle seat support as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a support frame attached to each of the lumbar support portion and the pair of spaced apart arm supports.
3. A vehicle seat support as claimed in claim 2, in which the support frame, lumbar support portion, and the pair of spaced apart arm supports are provided as a single, integral unit.
4. A vehicle seat support as claimed in either of claims 2 or 3, in which the support frame is composed of sheet steel.
5. A vehicle seat support as claimed in any preceding claim, in which at least one arm support is rotatable about at least one axis relative to the lumbar support portion.
6. A vehicle seat support as claimed in claim 5, in which each arm support comprises a first end located adjacent the lumbar support portion and a second opposed free end, and in which a longitudinal axis extends between the first and second ends of the arm support, and in which each arm support provides an upper contact surface for receiving an arm of a user, and in which at least one arm support is rotatable about an axis extending within the plane of the upper contact surface and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the arm support.

A vehicle seat support as claimed in claim 5, in which each arm support comprises a first end located adjacent the lumbar support portion and a second opposed free end, and in which a longitudinal axis extends between the first and second ends of the arm support, and in which each arm support provides an upper contact surface for receiving an arm of a user, and in which at least one arm support is rotatable about an axis extending perpendicular to the plane of the upper contact surface and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the arm support.
8. A vehicle seat support as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 7, in which each arm support comprises a first portion for engagement to the support frame, and a second portion for providing an upper contact surface.
9. A vehicle seat support as claimed in any one of claims 6 to 8, in which the arm supports provide a curved upper contact surface.
10. A vehicle seat support as claimed in claim 9, in which lumbar support comprises:
a back rest portion arranged in use to be positioned adjacent a backrest of a vehicle seat; and a base portion extending from the back rest portion of the lumbar support and shaped and dimensioned so as to be arranged in use to extend from adjacent a backrest of a vehicle and to be positioned adjacent a seat portion of a vehicle seat.
11. A vehicle seat support as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the arm supports are arranged in use to extend from or adjacent a side portion of a seat portion of a vehicle seat and to extend across and to prevent access to a gap located between the side portion of the seat portion of the vehicle seat and other adjacent components of the vehicle.
12. A vehicle seat support as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a base portion arranged in use to be located adjacent a seat portion of a vehicle seat, and in which the base portion is attached to each of the lumbar support portion and the pair of spaced apart arm supports.
13. A vehicle seat support as claimed in claim 12, in which the base portion further comprises a plurality of spaced apart vent openings.
14. A vehicle seat support as claimed in either of claims 12 or 13, in which the base portion, lumbar support portion, and the pair of spaced apart arm supports are provided as a single integral unit.
15. A vehicle seat support as claimed in any of claims 12 to 14, in which the vehicle seat support is composed of flexible silicone sheeting.
16. A vehicle seat support as claimed in any of claims 12 to 15, in which the vehicle seat support is moveable from a first position in which the lumbar support portion, base portion, and each arm support extends within a single plane, to a second position in which the lumbar support portion is arranged to be located adjacent a back rest of a vehicle seat, the base portion is arranged in use to be position adjacent a seat portion of a vehicle seat, and each arm support is arranged to be position adjacent each side of the seat portion of a vehicle seat.
17. A vehicle seat support as claimed in any of claims 12 to 16, further comprising an internal support mesh arranged in use to adjust the positioning and shape of the vehicle seat support.
18. A vehicle seat support as claimed in any of claims 12 to 17, in which the arm supports are arranged in use to extend from or adjacent each side portion of a seat portion of a vehicle seat and to extend across and to prevent access to a gap located between the side portion of the seat portion of the vehicle seat and other adjacent components of the vehicle.
19. A vehicle seat insert comprising:
an elongate support frame shaped and dimensioned to be received within and extend substantially across a gap provided between a side portion of a seat portion of a vehicle seat and an adjacent component of a vehicle, in which the elongate support frame comprises an upper surface arranged in use to be located at or adjacent a seat portion of a vehicle seat, and in which the support frame has a tapered transverse profile; and a plurality of storage containers shaped and dimensioned to be removably received within and spaced apart from each other within the support frame, in which each storage container provides an opening located adjacent the upper surface of the support frame.
20. A vehicle seat comprising one or more of:
a vehicle seat support as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 18; and/or a vehicle seat insert as claimed in claim 19.
21. A method of securing a vehicle seat support as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 11 to a vehicle seat, the method comprising:
positioning the lumbar support portion adjacent the back rest of the vehicle seat such that a portion of the lumbar support portion extends from the back rest, across a gap provided between the back rest and a seat portion of the vehicle seat, and is positioned adjacent the seat portion of the vehicle seat; and positioning the arm supports adjacent each opposed side portion of the seat portion of the vehicle seat, such that each arm support extends from the side portion and across a gap provided between the side portion of the seat portion of the vehicle seat and adjacent components of the vehicle.
22. A method of securing a vehicle seat support as claimed in any one of claims 12 to 18 to a vehicle seat, the method comprising:
providing a vehicle seat support in the first position;
moving each of the lumbar support portion and arm supports so as to extend perpendicular to the plane defined by the base portion of the vehicle seat support;
positioning the base portion adjacent the seat portion of the vehicle seat, and the lumbar support portion adjacent the back rest portion of the vehicle seat; and moving the arm supports into a predetermined position so as to extend from the base portion and across a gap provided between each side portion of the seat portion of the vehicle seat and adjacent components of the vehicle.
