Abstract

A mat for a domestic pedal operated waste bin has a raised lip, or captive edge 2 that encompasses the lower circumference of the bin. Preferably the mat has a high friction surface 6 adjacent to the floor. A part of the mat adjacent to the pedal may extend beneath the pedal such that a user stands on the flap 5 when operating the pedal. Preferably a supporting edge on the opposite side of the mat to the pedal braces the bin to help prevent the bin from tipping over.

Captive mat for a domestic waste bin
The invention relates to a portable captive mat to be placed under a pedal operated domestic waste bin to prevent the waste bin from sliding on low friction surfaces.
When someone opens a pedal operated domestic waste bin, they apply force on the pedal to open the bin, sometimes the bin will slide laterally if placed on a low friction surface. A device is needed to prevent the bin from sliding across the floor and potentially damaging the surface or surrounding areas.
Opening a pedal operated waste bin is a common activity in a domestic kitchen. Often, the flooring in a domestic kitchen is tiled or made of parquet wood for sanitory reasons. These floor surfaces are smooth by nature and provide very little friction or grip if a lateral force is applied to the waste bin.
When operating the pedal to open the waste bin, the force applied is primarily in a vertical plane, with very little lateral force. However, if the overall force applied is high, the lateral force becomes significant enough for the waste bin to overcome the friction required to keep it in place, then the waste bin moves along the floor surface. This phenomenon is more likely to occur when the waste bin has been recently emptied and it's at its lightest state or if the lid sticks and more force is required to open it.
Overall, the opening of a domestic pedal operated waste bin can lead to it moving across a lowfriction surface, causing frustration to the user and leading to damage of surrounding surfaces that come in contact with the moving bin.
To prevent waste bins from moving, they are often placed against cupboards or walls, preventing them from moving very far. However the movement of the waste bin often leads to damage of surrounding cupboards or walls if the force applied is high enough. In certain designs, if the waste bin is placed directly against a wall, the waste bin lid cannot open fully.
To prevent waste bins from moving, they can be placed on plastic or rubber matting to increase the friction between the bin and the flooring. This means that higher forces can be applied to the waste bin before it moves along the floor surface. However, the waste bin can still move across the mat, as it's not held in position other than by friction.
To overcome these problems, the present invention is a high-friction rubber captive mat that is placed between the waste bin and the flooring. This is tailored to fit snugly to the base of the waste bin, with a significant captive lip around the bottom edge, but not impacting the use of the pedal or the opening mechanism. The rubber mat extends further in front of the waste bin, to add additional surface area for increased friction, which the pedal operator stands on to open the bin, thus providing downwards force and stabilising the device. This extended flap can also catch spillage when the user is emptying domestic household waste into the bin.
This leads to a more user-friendly and efficient opening of the waste bin, with less user frustration and potential damage to surfaces around the bin.
The surface face of the rubber material is designed in such a way that optimal grip is produced against the horizontal forces that the user applies when opening the waste bin using the pedal.
This surface can be of a ridged nature, facing the front of the waste bin, providing optimum grip. It can also be crescent shaped to reduce the possibility of lateral movement. Hi-tech man-made surfaces can also be used, providing vacuum suction that relies on pressure sealing out air and moisture.
The mat surface is designed to leave no marks or traces on the flooring. It is also machinewashable in a domestic washing machine.
As waste bins come in all shapes and sizes, the device will be manufactured depending on the various shapes and sizes of pedal operated waste bins in domestic households.
The design of this device can also be incorporated into the overall design and manufacturing process of pedal operated waste bins.
Devices using floor-mounted captive attachments have been proposed to provide stability to a domestic waste bin such as ROUSE JASON C, ROUSE LINDSAY JO (US Pat. No. US7108150).
However, these require fixing to the floor and are not portable in nature. This also means that the attachments cannot be easily disassembled and cleaned.
Smaller devices using captive recesses have been proposed to provide stability to a range of cylindrical household objects such as LINDSAYJENNIFER LOUISE, O'CONNOR AARON (Aus Pat No. AU1118001). However, the surface area is limited to being directly under the container and the design does not allow for the operation of pedal operated waste bins.
The device is a one-piece rubberised product, that can be fitted to a domestic waste bin. The waste bin is simply slotted vertically onto the device by the user. The bin is then held in place by the captive edge. The device comes in various sizes to fit cylindrical, rectangular and square shaped waste bins.
At the rear of the device a slot allows for the pedal mechanism to operate the lid without restricting movement of this mechanism. At the front of the device, a slot allows for the pedal to be operated by the user without restricting movement of the pedal. Around the circumference of the device is a captive edge that has two functions:
(1) It holds the waste bin in place, so that the waste bin cannot move in a horizontal plane when installed within the device.
(2) It provides a supportive edge opposed to the waste bin pedal that prevents the waste bin from rocking backwards if an excessive horizontal force is applied to the pedal.
Alternatively, the device can be constructed using a material selected from the group consisting of Styrene-Butadiene-Rubber, EPDM, butylrubber, Polyurethane, Neoprene, Hydrogenated Nitrile, HYPALON, Nitrile, Acrylic ACM, VAMAC, Silicon rubber, Viton, Fluorosilicone, TetrafluoroethylenePropylene, mixtures or blends thereof.
The device has an extended flap in front ofthe pedal slot to catch any waste material dropped by the user when emptying waste into the bin.
The invention will now be described solely by the way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the captive rubber mat to be placed under a pedal operated domestic waste bin to prevent the waste bin from sliding on a low friction surface.
Figure 2 shows the high-grip surface on the underside ofthe captive rubber mat.
Figure 3 shows the placement ofthe rubber mat in relation to a waste bin.
In Figure 1, the device 1 is a one-piece rubberised product, that comprises of a captive edge 2 that holds in place the lower circumference of a domestic waste bin.
At the rear of the device a mechanism slot 3 allows for the pedal mechanism to operate the lid of the domestic waste bin without the device restricting movement of this mechanism. At the front of the device, a pedal slot 4 allows for the pedal to be operated by the user ofthe waste bin without restricting movement ofthe pedal.
At the front ofthe device there is an extended flap 5 in front ofthe pedal slot 4. This adds additional surface area for increased friction, which the pedal operator stands on to open the bin, thus providing downwards force and stabilising the device. The extended flap 5 also catches any waste material that might be dropped by the user when emptying waste into the bin.
In figure 2, the underside of device 1 is shown with the ridged surface 6, facing the front ofthe waste bin, providing optimum grip.
In figure 3, The device 1 is shown with a domestic waste bin 7 installed for demonstration purposes. The captive edge 2 is shown encompassing the lower circumference ofthe waste bin. The pedal slot 4, provides enough space for the waste bin pedal 8 to be freely operated by the user.
