Ice and snow scraper
The invention relates to a portable device used by persons to remove ice and snow from the windscreen and other glass areas of a vehicle.
When someone is clearing a vehicle windscreen and other glass areas of ice and snow, a device is needed to efficiently clear these areas in the least time possible to allow the vehicle to be driven with the driver having a Clearview of the road.
Efficiently clearing the ice and snow from a vehicle windscreen and other glass areas is a common inconvenience in time and effort on cold mornings. During the clearing process, often the vehicle motor is switched-on to assist the clearing process, using large amounts of fuel and energy. The clearing of ice and snow is normally done by someone mechanically using a plastic edged scraper or brush. This device is normally not heated, although heated blades do exist but have limited effect as they cannot provide the high amounts of energy required over a large surface area to melt the ice and snow in a short time.
Overall, the clearing ice and snow from a vehicle is a cold and messy business, often conducted in adverse weather conditions.
Devices using a heated blade have been previously proposed to defrost surfaces or remove ice from windscreens such as SAGE JONATHAN (US Pat. No. US2005155963) and LALLI SARBJIT SINGH (GB Pat. No. GB2384168) that use heating elements to melt and soften ice before the scraper blade is manually used. However, the energy required to warm the entire windcreeen and glass surfaces of a vehicle, heat, then melt the ice and then heat the resultant water is too high for a conventionally heated blade to be effective. This is because the contact area is too small and heat is taken away from the blade almost immediately on contact with a cold surface that is typically less than zero Celcius.
Devices using a heated fluid have been proposed to remove ice from windscreens such as SPRUNGER TAME (US Pat. No. US5189756). Hot water can also be used if a source is available, but this can refreeze and cause icing elsewhere on the vehicle, particularly in extremely cold conditions.
Devices using a roller action have been proposed to remove ice from windscreens such as SAUER BURKHARD (German Pat. No. DE10037498) that has an electrical coil heating a roller with fixed blades, one blade before and one blade after the roller. This previous device has no forced rotation of the roller and it's susceptable to the blade before the roller doing all the work like a conventional manual plastic blade, as well as the roller sliding along the windscreen without rotating or moving the contact point. This leads to a poor transfer of heat and a cut-out of the device on high temperature protection.
To overcome these problems, the present invention is a portable hand-held device that when applied by the user to a windcreen or glass surface in a sweeping motion, efficiently clears all snow and ice by supplying a constant heat and mechanical driving source to multiple scraping blades and proving heat directly to the glass surface itself. The device has enough battery power to clear all the glass areas of a large SUV type vehicle over several minutes in extremely cold climatic conditions. The heat source is provided by a pressurised flow of heated air, that also provides the mechanical scraping action by rotating a cylinder with the attached scraper blades.
The flow of heated air has several functions:
(1) To continuously heat the multiple scraping blades on the rotating cylinder, thus providing a large heated surface area for ice and snow clearing.
(2) To continuously heat the single blade attached to the shield to provide an additional heated surface area for ice and snow clearing.
(3) To provide the rotational force for the cylinder by exhausting air from the holes, opposite from the scraping part of each blade. This thrusts the blades in the opposite direction to the air exhaust flow to scrape away the ice and snow.
(4) To provide a concentrated source of heated air to directly warm the glass surface and facilitate ease of ice and snow clearing.
(5) To provide a source of pressurised air to blow-away snow and loosened ice from the glass surface.
(6) To provide a a source of heated air to clear the scraping blades of ice and snow build-up during opperation.
The invention uses a high-power removeable rechargable battery that is plugged onto the base of the device body and can be removed for recharging. The battery has a soft-foam grip for comfort of use as well as an integrated on-off button and a safety switch that needs to be pressed during operation of the device and cuts-out the device when released. The device body is made from a hard durable plastic material.
The blades on the device are plastic and have non-scratch properties and are designed as a servicable item that can be replaced after long-term use or damage.
The rotating cylinder is made from plastic and is covered by a plastic shield that directs exhausted air back onto the glass surface. The shield has a slot cut horizontally across the length that allows excess snow and ice to be exhausted from the device as well as preventing stalling of the rotating cylinder. Attached to the shield is an additional plastic blade that is also heated by the warm exhaust air.
The device body is connected to the rotating cylinder by a metal flow pipe.
The air inlets on the device body have a protective sleeve to prevent the user of the device from blocking them during operation.
Alternatively, the device body and rotating cylinder can be constructed using a metallic material such as stainless steel or a ceramic material.
The invention will now be described solely by the way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the heated portable Ice and snow scraper to remove ice and snow from the windscreen and glass surface areas of a vehicle.
Figure 2 shows the rotating cylinder with its composite parts.
Figure 3 shows one of the scraping blades that is fixed to the rotating cylinder.
Figure 4 shows the flow pipe that connects the device body to the rotating cylinder.
Figure 5 shows the single fixed scraping blade that is attached to the shield.
Figure 6 shows an alternative attachment connected to the device body
Figure 7 shows the alternative attachment with the high-flow heated air exhaust holes visible.
In Figure 1, the body of the device 7 comprises of a rechargable battery unit 9 that powers the integrated motor and fan unit 15 and the heating element 16 that provide a pressurised flow of heated air to the rotating cylinder 1 via the flow pipe 5 that in turn exhausts warm air through holes positioned along the length of the scraping blades attached to the rotating cylinder 1. See figures 2 & 3 for detail.
The rechargeable battery unit has an integrated ON/OFF button 10, circumferential safety switch 11 and soft-foam handle 12.
The integrated motor and fan unit 15 draws ambient air from the air inlet holes 13, a protective sleeve 14 prevents blockage of the air inlet holes by the user.
The device has a rotating cylinder with integrated blades 1, a shield 2 which has a slot cut across the length 3 and has a single fixed scraping blade 4. This sharpened blade means that the device can be either used as a conventional scraper when no power source is available, or can supplement the mechanical action of the rotating cylinder as it's effectively a blade heated by the exhausted warm air. The sheld is attached to the flow pipe 5, by a bracket 6 that is designed to allow for thermal expansion of the device. The flow pipe is connected to the body of the device 7 by a threaded nut 8.
In figure 2, the rotating cylinder 1 is shown with two rolling element bearings 17 that fit onto the bearing connection points 23 as shown in Figure 4. Fixing holes 18 allow the scraping blade to be attached by screws.
In figure 3, the scraping blade 19, has a sharp edge that when the device is used, scrapes the ice and snow from the glass surface in a mechanical motion driven by the heated air exhausted from the holes positioned along the length of the scraping blade 20. The holes are filled with metal cylinders 21, that have the function of conducting the heat across the scraping blades in contact with the glass area as well as straightening, directing and silencing the air exhaust flow.
In figure 4, the flow pipe 5 is shown with holes on the sparge arm 22 that direct the heated air from the flow pipe 5 into the rotating cylinder that fits onto the bearing connection points 23.
In figure 5, the single fixed scraping blade 4 is shown, which is attached to the shield 2 by screws.
In figure 6, an alternative attachment 24 is proposed and is connected to the device body 7 by the threaded nut 8. The component parts of the device body 7 are the same as shown in Figure 1. This attachment has a single fixed scraper blade 26 attached to the end by screws. At the end of the attachment 24 there are a series of high-flow holes 25 that exhaust the heated air flow above the scraping edge, these holes transfer heat to the blade and the windscreen or glass surface when the device is used.
In figure 7, the alternative attachment 24 connected to the device body 7 is shown with the series of high-flow holes 25 visible from the edge where the single fixed scraper blade 26 is attached that comes into contact with the windscreen or glass surface when the device is used.
